Regarding Translations #general

Steve Orlen

Dear Cousins,

It's heartening to see that so many genners are responding to requests for
translations of various public documents. Wouldn't it then also be
interesting for the rest of us to see what sort of information people have
gleaned >from this or that document. Not necessarily the details - although
some might be of general interest - but the information included on, say, a
birth certificate >from 19th century Odessa.

UK burial 1898 - no idea where! #unitedkingdom

We have a 1898 death certificate (Whitechapel London) for Jacob Bickholz, age
forty. There is no question that he is Pickholz and that is the was his wife is listed
when she died a couple of years later.

I cannot find his grave nor do I have any idea who his parents are. (The wife was
buried in Plashet, but they don't have him listed there.)

Jacob doesn't seem to show up in the UK burials database and the fact that the
death was reported on a Saturday (he died Thursday, 2 June) makes me wonder
if he is in a Jewish cemetery at all.

Any suggestions how we might proceed - by remote control?

Dead End in Bromberg? (SIMON and LESSER) #germany

David Bendory <david90@...>

Some time ago, I discovered in my GGF's and GGGF's naturalization papers
in NYC that they were >from "Bromberg, Germany." The consensus of the SIG
was that Bromberg must be the city that is today Bydgoszcz, Poland.

I wrote to the Bydgoszcz archives in search of the birth certificates of
my GGF Charles SIMON and great uncle Jacob SIMON and of the marriage
certificate of my GGGF Michael SIMON to Pauline LESSER, but there were no
records found for any of these events.

I would appreciate suggestions >from the SIG on how to proceed. In
particular...
* Are the archivists in Bydgiszcz accurate and thorough in their searches?
* Should I try the LDS films anyway?
* Perhaps I would do better to hire a researcher in Bydgoszcz?
* Maybe "my" Bromberg is a different Bromberg >from Bydgoszcz?

Thank you for your input.

Further re BMD Documents in France. #france

Rosanne Leeson <rdleeson@...>

Pierre Hahn posted today regarding the duplicate records kept in France
for BMD. His suggestion to check both the Mairie of the town involved,
as well as the Departemental Archive is excellent.

The law requires the filing of records in the Departemental archives
after a certain period of time has passed (100 years). However, in my
experience, in addition to legibility problems etc., I have found a
copy of the record being sought on the LDS film of the Archive records,
when that particular document was "missing" in the town Mairie.

So do indeed check both places! Don't give up the search!

Heydrich #general

Janet Arnold <yomi427@...>

I have read in several books that Heydrich was tormented throughout his school
years for being a Jew. In the book "Mishlinge" it stated that his parents mail
was addressed to "Israel and Sarah". I also read that Hitler and Himmler had a
meeting to discuss this problem, but that they agreed that Heydrich was so loyal
(such a monster) and had purged off his Jewish taint so successfully that they
kept him on in his position. Some of the information came >from Heydrich's own
sister-in-law. I have also heard >from German Jews who lived there during those
times that it was common knowledge that Heydrich's background was Jewish and that
Hitler as well had Jewish blood through his father. This was uncovered by Hans
Frank who discovered that a Jew >from Graz named Frankenberger paid child support
for Hitler's father until Alois Hitler was 14-years-old.
