November 10th Meeting - JGS - Hamilton Ontario Canada & Area #germany

Ina Levitt-Yanover <inaly@...>

MODERATOR NOTE: We do NOT usually post routine JGS meeting notices *** except ***
meetings whose topic is specific to German Jewish Genealogy.
Notices which are *** not *** specific to our topic should be
sent instead to the JGDG (JewishGen Forum) I'm posting the
following because I don't remember hearing >from this particular JGS before.
GerSig members who wish to receive future announcements >from the Hamilton Ontario
JGS shold contact the sender of this message privately. ====>

When: November 10, 2004 at 7:30 PM

Where: Temple Anshe Sholom
215 Cline Avenue North, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Program: We're happy to welcome Michelle Gold as our speaker.
Michelle has travelled extensively overseas and will be sharing
insights >from her most recent trip. Her topic is entitled
"Budapest, Vienna & Prague: A Jewish Tour". If you've considered
a similar trip to research your family or if you're interested in hearing
about the present and past Jewish presence in these cities,
you'll want to hear Michelle speak.

Is taking the next step to trace your Great Grandmother confusing
or frustrating? Have any of your ancestral lines slowed you
down? Is there an Internet site that confuses you? Bring your
specific research questions to our next meetings (Nov. 10th &
Dec. 1st). Present them verbally, in writing, by email or phone
and Ralph Bloch will look for a solution and then present it at
our first meeting of 2005 on January 12th. Of course in the
meantime we'll see what our panel of experts can do with
questions >from the floor. They'll tackle these after the speaker
at each of the next two meetings. This panel discussion will
replace the Special Interest Groups that used to meet after each speaker.

For further information please email at: HamiltonJewishGen@...

Researching ORENSHTEYN of Gorzd, Lithuania; Israel & South Africa #general

James Platt <jrplatt@...>

Am researching the ORENSHTEYN (ARENSTEIN?) family originally >from Gargzdai
(Gorzd), Lithuania. My great-grandmother was Zyse ORENSHTEYN, born roughly in
1860, and married Shmuel PLATUS, also of Gorzd. Zyse eventually moved >from Gorzd
to Raanana, Israel in 1933 where she died in 1953. Zyse's sister was Rosa/Reisel
and married a man named BURSTEIN, and she eventually moved to Haifa where she
died.

My understanding is that many ORENSHTEYNs also settled in South Africa. Any help
is appreciated.

who was deported >from Berlin to Theresienstadt on 04 Jun 1942 where he

Was he possibly a brother of Aaron's? With kind regards,

PS, I also agree with the moderator's comment: "Your great grandfather was an

Re: SCHONFELD & KAUFMAN + Name Question #hungary

tom klein <h-sig@...>

i believe "abish" is a yiddish nickname for "avraham". it would be unusual to include a patronymic in a patronymic.

"father natan" is a somewhat strange name to find on a jewish burial.

Prof. G. L. Esterson <jerry@...>

Marc Weiss of New York posted as follows:

Abish was a Yiddish nickname associated with the Hebrew name Avraham. It
was used in day-to-day conversations with the holder of the name, but was
never (to my knowledge) used as a formal kinui for Avraham. Thus, it would
not have been required to be written in a Get (Jewish divorce contract),
but might have been used this way sometimes. Other Yiddish nicknames and
formal kinuim for the Hebrew name Avraham can be seen on the Hungary Given
Names Data Base on the JewishGen web site:

by searching for the name Avraham.
