I just received a photograph of a cousin with this caption: "Madame et Monsieur S.
HALKIN et Madame GRINBERG vous prient d'assister au lunch et au diner qui aront
lieu dans les salons de l'ermitage Dimanche 10 Janvier 1937, a 16 heures."

The format appears to be a wedding announcement. My French hasn't been used in 45
years but I think it translates as: "Mrs & Mr S. HALKIN and Mrs GRINBERG ask you
to join them for lunch and dinner (¿qui aront lieu?) in the rooms of the Hermitage
Sunday, 10 January 1937 at 4 pm.

Is my assumption correct? We have been unable to find any trace of this branch of
the family.

I am researching any information about my grandmother's family:

Zlata (Eugenia) KRAMARUCKI (b. 1896) was the daughter of Nochum KRAMARUCKI and
Rivka Rachel PAKELCHIK.

Zlata was born in Kaunas, Lithuania and her father was listed as a resident of
Vandziogala.

Zlata married my grandfather Moshe-Leib SLOMOVITS. Moses was born in Rozavlea near
Sighet in Romania (then Hungary).

There is a puzzle - how did my Litvak GM meet my Hungarian GF ? Family story says
that Moses was a prisoner of war in WWI in Kaunas, and there he met my GM. I could
not establish anything relating my GF's military service in the Austro-Hungarian
army (neither Vienna or Budapest archives had anything about him), or to find a
marriage certificate (not in Vilnius nor in Baia Mare). However all their children
were born in Sighet, the first in 1923.

In my research I found another one-and-only KRAMARUCKI who changed his name in
Palestine to Kariv. I traced the family, and can establish that he was my GM's
first cousin, who came to Palestine in the early 1920's. His brother is the well
known poet, publicist and critic Avraham KARIV.

If any of the above rings any bells, please let me know.

residence" column of the SSDI reads : "XX953 (U.S. Consulate: CANADA)".
My question is : Would someone please tell me where I should write to in order to
get his death certificate?

My great great uncle provided Affidavits of Need for many relatives that permitted
the relatives to immigrate to the US in the 1930s.

Has anyone heard of these documents? Should I simply search for such a document
through a FOIA request? Does anyone know if the requests are referenced by who
made the request (my great great uncle) or by the person in Europe trying to get
in or both?

Thanks for any insights.

that there were no elopements. That's a rather sweeping statement! My own
parents eloped in December of 1928, and kept the marriage a secret >from family for
a year. During that year they became engaged, and their "official" Jewish
marriage was held on the same date, in 1929. Thus they could celebrate the
correct date, publicly, each year. (They did not live together that year.) The
first marriage was a civil one, for which I have the record. I would guess that
the rabbi was told of the earlier marriage, since he did not have to fill out any
forms for the state.

As bizarre as the civil marriage seems, there was a reason, not related to this
discussion.

The given name "Adieth"

=The Aramaic version of the bible contains Adieth [aiyn-dallet-yod-allef-tav], and
the meaning is pregnancy.
See the Onkalos translation in Genesis chapter 16.

In a second thought, pregnancy is the Hebrew word ibur [ayin-yod-bet-vav-resh].
"herayon" is also Hebrew for pregnancy, but ibur is an older word, and it also
means prosperity.
So Adieth, could have also meant prosperity...

Actually the Aramaic word in Gen. 16:4 is "adi-ath" (not "adi-eth"). In
context it means "she became pregnant" -- but it is used there simply as a verb
and certainly not as a given name.

Can anyone think of a plausible reason for using this word as a boy's given name?
I can't, so I am inclined to think it is pure coincidence. What would possibly
motivate parents to name their baby boy "She Became Pregnant"? Even if the mother
in question had had a hard time conceiving and finally got lucky, how likely is it
that the parents would saddle the child (even a girl-child, much less a boy!)
with a name like that? In any case, while Jews drew heavily on the Bible for
names, they normally drew on the Hebrew text, not on its Aramaic translation --
which very few could read and understan even if they were aware of its existence,
which I am betting most were not!!!

It is also possible that this strange name "Adieth" resulted >from a scribal
error? For instance, there is a biblical name Adiel, which occurs 3 times in the
book of Chronicles, and is sometimes used today in Israel, though not very common.
Could somebody, somewhere, somehow, have misread Adiel as Adiet?
Or is it possible that it's not Hebrew at all? I gather that the owner of this
name is still living, perhaps Steve could ask him and get back to us?
