I am searching for the family Greenstein/Grinstejn/Grinsten or however it is
spelled, cousins of my grandfather. I think the family came >from Zhitomir in the Ukraine. One of the sisters emigrated to Canada. She had siblings who went to South Africa. On the SA site in JewishGen I found mention of 2 people with the Greenstein name: 1. Phil Greenstein of Cape Town - he was the shul secretary of the Cape Town Orthodox Hebrew Congreagation 2. Herman Grinsten born in 04/01/1914. Came to SA through the port of Bremen at the age of 20. I am sure there are others in South Africa with this name. If there is any connection to your family or if you know anyone with this family background, please contact me privately. Thank you. Warm Regards, Hannah Engelstad Canada |

I am told that my great-grandfather, Abraham LANG was the chazzan at the Chevra
Kadisha Synagogue >from the time of his arrival until his death in 1907. Copies of records that I received >from the Jewish Genealogical Society of Montreal indicate that many births and marriages of my LANG family were recorded there. Is there any way that I can determine the validity of the story about his being the chazzan and if so, when he took this position? I am particularly interested in the dates as a means of determining his arrival in Montreal >from Romania. Thank you for any help you can provide.
