HeyJudy123@...
I have been told that the first names of HERSCHEL TZVI (or, alternatively,
TZVI HERSCHEL) and ARYEH LEIB are fairly common combinations, and much has been written to this Sig about the meanings of these names. Yet in my branch of the SEGAL family, hailing >from Czarist Lithuania, c. 1880 (our calendar), there apparently is the first name of HERSCHEL LEIB. Has anyone else heard of this particular combination? Thank you, Judy Segal New York City, USA

JGS Broward County, Florida. The meeting will be held at the Soref Jewish Community Center, 6501 West Sunrise Boulevard in Plantation. The community center is between Florida's Turnpike and University Drive on the north side of Sunrise Boulevard Genealogy is the key to the past. For some genealogists, it may lead to the startling discovery of roots they never imagined-Jewish roots. Gloria Mound, who was a presenter at the 24th annual International Genealogical Society conference in Jerusalem, will discuss the connection at the society's October meeting. Founder and executive director of the Casa Shalom Institute for Marrano-Anusim Studies in Gan Yavneh, Israel, Ms. Mound will talk about "The Importance of Genealogy in Marrano-Converso Research" with an emphasis on how much South Florida is an example. An honorary research fellow of the Department of Hispanic Studies at the University of Glasgow (Scotland) >from 1988 to 2003, Ms. Mound has published widely, including the Encyclopedia Judaica. Included in the institute's work is an on-going project with the University of Miami researching the Marrano aspects of early immigration >from the Spanish Balearics to Florida and Cuba. Ms. Mound's research has uncovered hitherto unknown Jewish communities around the world. The Casa Shalom Institute maintains a library and data base tracing Marrano evolution from the 16th Century to the present. The institute works are reconnecting these"lost Marranos" with the Jewish community and individuals with their Jewish genealogy. Admission is free and open to all wishing to further their interest in genealogy. Spania" Metalwork embroidery in the Sasov area
#galicia

Leiah Elbaum <elbaum@...>
asked ".............. the family involvement in "working shpania" (I believe the word is Yiddish, I never saw the term written), a cottage industry which was common in that area in late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was a kind of metal thread embroidery technique, used especially for the ornate collars (atarot, atoros) of tallitot (talleisim), but also on yarmulkes and ornamental bibs worn by women for special occasions. I was told that Jews came >from all around Europe and even the US to purchase "spania" work for their communities. ......................... I'm curious whether anyone else can tell me more about this tradition in the region, any useful resources for researching it ...................." The Hebrew memoirs of Rabbi Osher Miller (of Romania) were published by his son Rabbi Pinchos Miller (then rabbi of Upper Nazareth) in Jerusalem 1984 entitled "Oilomoi shel Abba". The work, which includes many rabbinical genealogical charts, describes life between the two World Wars in Romania and Hungary in dozens of Orthodox Communities. It includes many piquant tales and gives interesting vignettes of urban and rural life. Unfortunately the work has no index. However, if my memory serves me correctly there is a description of a certain townlet or village which produced woven silver "atorot" for Talesim for most of Europe. A local chassidic entrepeneur set up the business and supplied his many female outworkers with the raw materials. In his later years he delegated all the actual labour, but when the Muncatcher Rebbe's (R' Chaim Elozor Shapiro) daughter was getting married,he provided his own handiwork. Could such French names such as Valyntin or Valentin be showing up stemming from
the time when France controlled Rheinland Pfalz (the Rhineland Palatinate region) in the 17th century? Certainly many other times in Franco-German history that French names and cognates could have undergone intercultural transference / exchange.
