Re: free Social Security Death Indexes

Mary B
http://www.newenglandancestors.org/research/database/ss/default.asp has>free access to SSDI through September 1, 2004. I used this website to check my father's listing since it was quite up to date and he died this year. Under the residence column it was listed as Naguabo PR 718. I had to look this up because I'd never heard of it. Imagine my surprise when I find out it is in Puerto Rico. Can someone explain why an American citizen living for the past 42 years in Australia, who has never been to Puerto Rico, would have his residence listed this way? Jaremcze/Yaremcha records?

Daniel Mendelsohn <damendel@...>
Greetings,
I've been searching the all-Poland databases for records >from the spa town (formerly Austrian, then Polish, now Ukrainian) of Jaremca/Jaremcze/Yaremcha, (coordinates 48'45" / 24'55") and, suspiciously, nothing shows up, apart >from records >from one 1929 business directory. I am looking specifically for a record >from 1912, when the town would have belonged to Austria, and I've been assuming that subsequent to 1919 it belonged to Poland, in the administrative district of Stanislawow; but perhaps I'm wrong. or perhaps there are simply no records. Can anyone point me in the right direction--not just for database searches here, but (e.g.) which archive, if any, pre-WWI records >from this town might be found in? Thanks very much. I have passed the 10 year mark since I actively began my genealogical
research. Updating the JGFF, I see how the list of surname searches has grown. I initially started compiling my paternal Family Book - now I have 5 Family books, and I have been thinking of [that's called procrastination] binding them all together! One big happy Family! Please take a moment to read my list. Perhaps there is someone out in cyberspace who will see a familiar name. It's happened before! >from a JewishGen posting in Florida to a Jewishgenner in New Jersey - to Paris - back to me - and a family in France - 1st cousins! After the assignation of Tsar Alexander III of Russia on March 14, 1881 there were many pogroms. Does any one have a list of the locations and dates of these pogroms for the years 1881 and 1882? Some that I am aware of are: • Berezovka, Ukraine – April 4 • Elisabethgrad, ??? – April 27 • Kiev, Ukraine – May 5 On April 27, 1881 there was a pogrom against Russian Jews in Elisabethgrad. This is sited at: http://www.brainyhistory.com/years/1881.html - • Can anyone tell me the exact location of Elisabethgrad? ===== Jim Brook New York, NY jim_brook1935@...

Re: Slobodka's photos
#belarus
Irene Newhouse <einew@...>
This sort of thing is not easy. For one thing, there are a LOT
of Slobodka's in Belarus - the name means "village"-- check http://www.calle.com/world , click on Belarus, click on S & see what I mean. [Why anyone would think that "village" is a distinguishing name for a place escapes me totally!] Then, these are very small places & things like postcards of them don't really exist. In the former Lida district, where Lida had about 50,000 people immediately before WWII - about 1/2 of them Jews - there were 8 or 9 other places with more than 1,000 Jews at that time. I can find postcards of Lida for sale at auction sites, particularly the Polish one, www.allegro.pl . However, finding any kind of illustration of one of the other 8 or 9 places almost never happens. I have also found that nearly all the preward postcards of Lida date from World War I & were created by the German army of occupationfor use of soldiers to send home - they have captions in German on them. So unless there was an army center of WWI occupation in your Slobodka, the chances of the existence of postcards are even less. YIVO has a very large collection of pictures of places of Jewish interest. Have you checked their site yet? www.yivo.org & look for the collection 1000 -somethings. Best of luck!
