Re: INS Manifest number - occupation column *help*

Dear Mike,
This number and date is the certificate of arrival and the date is 1943 when this person applied for naturalization and received a certificate of arrival which was noted on his passenger manifest line. The 1 at the beginning of the number is for the New York area of the US Federal Court where he showed his Intent to be Naturalized. The Records for this naturalization after 1943 should be at NARA in Manhattan at 201 Varick Street and for $10 they will do a search for you. There is also at Italian Genealogy Group a database for these naturalizations and you may be able to find their petition number and Date by going online and looking for it. Good luck. Diane Jacobs New York *** Hello, I have thoroughly read through the website section devoted to explanations to the manifest annotations: http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/Manifests/occ/ and this did help me better understand my great grandfather mastranski's manifest number in the occupation column: 1-430516-8-21-43 However - could someone tell me if there is actually any way to find out more information >from this annotation? Does this number connect to more than the fact that in 1943 the district he applied to was "1" and therefore applied in either Boston, MA or New Haven, CT? I was hoping I might find a way to connect this information with the actual certificate of his naturalization - assuming one was carried out. Can anyone confirm this or point me in the right direction please. Thank you for a wonderfully informed website. Regards, Mike Mostransky

Kagan's Prenumerantn Lists: A "how-to" guide
#general
Tom Chatt
With the help of various people on this list, I recently took a crack
at looking up my ancestral town in Berl Kagan's "Sefer HaPrenumerantn". I had seen this work referred to by many other books, and knew that it was a seminal work that may contain valuable information about my shtetl. I also knew that it was written in Yiddish and Hebrew, which was daunting to me, as I have only the most rudimentary skills at "decoding" the Hebrew alphabet. However, the book is highly structured, and I found I was able to extract useful information >from it. Based on my experience, I decided I should give back to this great community that has helped me out so much, so I wrote up a "beginner's how-to guide" for using this resource. Thanks to some nice HTML editing by Warren Blatt, it is now an InfoFile here on JewishGen: < http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/prenumerantn.htm > I hope this will help others to make use of this important resource, and to learn more about their shtetls! Best wishes, Tom Chatt Los Angeles, CA

Jewish Colonization Association -- WWII-era records

Folks:
I have a communication on Jewish Colonization Association (Paris) letterhead regarding the prospective emigration of my great-uncle and his family from Poland to Argentina. The date of the letter is 17 August 1939. This is the last trace we have of these six people. Did JCA continue after the start of the war, two weeks later? Were such rescues immediately rendered completely hopeless? Were JCA records preserved? Are they available for reference? Thanks, Henry Neugass henryn@... remove 'zzz'

Hello everyone,
One of our first projects to be done *after* the Jerusalem Conference held in July 2004, was to rebuilt the website of the Israel Genealogical Society (IGS). Our devoted Webmaster (should I say Webmistress?), Mrs. Rose Feldman, is working very hard on it, with both artistic and technological senses. One of the updated pages is entitled: "Books by IGS Members" under the heading "Publications". You will find there only books that have been very recently published. Some articles, first published in Sharsheret Hadorot, the IGS Quarterly, have been posted too. And there will be more! You will read about the activities (meetings) in all the six IGS branches etc.. I invite you all to visit >from time to time the IGS Website: www.isragen.org.il Gmar Hatima Tova! Shana Tova! Mathilde Tagger Jerusalem

Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Philadelphia Celebrates 25 Years
#general
Mark Halpern
In May 1979, seven Jewish Philadelphians with interest in their
roots met to form of an organization to further their interest. This was the first meeting of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Philadelphia. On Sunday, October 10, 2004, we will honor the past and foretell the future at a Luncheon to be held at the Adams Mark Hotel, City Avenue & Monument Road, Philadelphia. We have a wonderful program (see below) and invite all Jewish Genealogists to attend. The cost is $35 per person and includes a fabulous luncheon with choice of four meals, which includes a kosher chicken option. The festivities will start at 11 AM with a "Treasured Memories Exhibit'" where Society members will display their most cherished genealogical possession(s). The Luncheon will start at 12 Noon. After the luncheon, we have three outstanding speakers. The keynote speaker requires no introduction. Susan King, the founder of JewishGen, will talk about Jewish Genealogy and JewishGen - the Next 25 Years. We will then hear >from Nan Beth Wallace, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Jewish Archives Center. Nan will talk about the role of PJAC in the next 25 years. Rounding out the program will be native Philadelphian Hankus Netsky. Hankus is the Director of the Klezmer Conservatory Band and author of "Klezmer Music and Community in 20th Century Philadelphia." We will hear some Klezmer music and learn about the history of Klezmer in Philadelphia. If you are interested in attending or finding out more about this celebration, please contact the Society at jgsgp@... or by phone at 610-363-7956. I hope you can join us in this celebration. I have found that several of the families I am researching moved >from
Vilna to Berlin in the 1860s-1870s. These branches then came to the US in the 1880s. The names of these families are TOBACK, TRYWUSCH, and IAISCH (JAESS, YAIS, IMPORT)and maybe BECKER. Was moving to Germany a common occurrence? Thanks for your help. Linda Gilboord Albany, NY

In late June, during a visit to the Central Archive in
Vilnius, I saw a file containing 1,000 prisoners in Lithuanian prisons in 1936. Some were Jews and most of them were in prison accused of being communists. Each prisoner's file contained three photographs of the Prisoner - two side views and a front view. I made a copy of one file as an example. It means nothing to me personally but may connect up for someone else. Efroim LENTIN, son of Girsh, born in 1909 in Zidik, Lithuania. His mother was Ile, maiden name ZAK. Efroim's last place of residence was 25A Tilze Street in Kaunas. He formerly was a soldier in the 8th Infantry Regiment in the Lithuanian Army. If anyone is interested in Efroim Lentin, please contact me privately and I will be glad to send you copies of the file documents. You can then contact the Central Archive and, for a small fee, obtain a copy of the photographs. Please contact me privately at homargol@... Howard Margol homargol@...
