Kanczuga records questions
#galicia
Judy Keiner <J.C.Keiner@...>
I'm wondering if other people who have subscribed to get the spreadsheets of
the Kanczuga 1851-1903 records have now obtained invidual copies of any of their family records? I am wondering how much extra information the original records show beyond what is in the spreadsheets. For example: Do death records list the name of the informant? Place of birth? Cause of death? Other useful information? Do birth and marriage records list additional useful information? Are there particular identified LDS or other readily available records which cover the people of Kanczuga pre 1851? For example, I've discovered a 1774-born Kanczuga ancestor through his death record of 1857, and would like to see how much more I could find out about him and the many other ancestors who appear in the post 1851 records as born before then. There is a puzzle which is that many couples registered marriages in 1902 which had been in existence for many years. For example, my great grandfather and mother's marriage appears in 1859 and then they registered it again in 1902. Any reason known for why that happened? Does anyone know the actual date of the final massacre of the Jews of Kanczuga in July 1942? What experiences have people had getting the post 1904 records? Hungarian magnate landowners
#general
Shlomo Katz <SKATZ@...>
The question did not specify Jewish versus non-Jewish. My great-great-
grandfather Yisroel KATZ was a landowner in the Marmarosh province of Hungary. His holdings seem to have passed to only one of his (at least) three sons, Shmuel Zanvil Katz (died 1890), and >from there to his son-in-law, Zysha ELEFANT (died 1942). Zysha was a fabulously wealthy man whose properties included many forests. He employed about 150 people, and issued his own currency. (My great-grandfather, Shmuel Zanvil's brother, ended up as a porter. There must be a story there. Oh well! On the bright side, one of Zysha's descendants underwrote the publication of the family tree that I wrote.) Shlomo Katz Silver Spring MD

Re: INS Manifest number
#general
Joel Weintraub <jweintraub@...>
There is an error in a Friday post about the interpretation of the
Certificate of Arrival number that is sometimes seen on Ellis Island Manifests. The first digit of the particular number which started the thread was "1-." The post on Friday indicated that meant the New York City area (courts requesting the document). New York is actually "2-" while "1-" can be Boston or New Haven, Ct. It's interesting that a table of such numbers was published in AVOTAYNU in Spring 1996 (page 11) and shows: 1- Boston; 2-New York; 3-Philadelphia; 4-Washington DC; 5-Buffalo; 6-Pittsburgh; 7-Cleveland; 8-Detroit; 9-Cincinnati; 10-Birmingham; 11-Chicago; 12-St Louis MO; 13-New Orleans; 14- St Paul; 15-Omaha; 16-Kansas City MO; 17-Fort Worth; 18-Denver; 19-Salt Lake City; 20-Seattle; 21-Portland; 22-San Francisco; 23-Los Angeles. This Table shows "US Naturalization District Numbers as of 1920." Now compare these numbers with: http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/Manifests/occ/do33-43.html and you will see that this table, for 1933 to 1943, expanded the coverage for specific manifest number districts and added more numbers. In any case, "1-" is not New York. Joel Weintraub, Dana Point, CA

Dear Stan, Israel, and JGS members,I found one that let me get as far as entering a name and surname (there *must* be at least one "Jose Diaz" in the country), and submitting the search. The response was that no such listing was found. The other directories I found act about as you describe, so you appear to be correct. In your place, my Plan B would be to find the nearest Mexican consulate and ask to use their directory. Consulates always have home telephone directories; I have used them in Tel-Aviv, before online directories became available. I would also like to find a 1920 or so Mexico City census online so ifI would be surprised if the Library of Congress doesn't have such a thing. That's where I have been finding things like town maps of Iasi (you can't find one in Iasi, and people look at you funny for thinking it would be). If you can't find the census elsewhere, you might think about a visit to Washington for a few days, and pop into the LOC, which is filled with helpful people. You might also write to the Mexican Embassy and ask them if they can help. I doubt whether inter-library loans extend that far south, but it costs nothing to ask you local library if they can help. Spanish help needed (Polish Jews in Tehran, 1943)

Daniel Kazez <dkazez@...>
I am studying a long list of Polish Holocaust survivors >from the American
Jewish Archives: "Polish Refugees in Tehran, 1943" The list was, for reasons I don't yet understand, prepared by an organization in Mexico. The document has a two-page introduction in Spanish. Can someone help me understand this introduction? The American Jewish Archives requests that their images not be posted on the web for public viewing. I will be happy to share the needed images (just two) with whomever might be able to help me understand these pages. Re: Berl Kagan's "Sefer HaPrenumerantn".
#general
Gary Mokotoff- <mokotoff@...>
Tom Chatt notes that Berl Kagan's "Sefer HaPrenumerantn" (known in English
as "Hebrew Subscription Lists) can be a genealogical resource. The book is a rare book and you may have to devote time to finding a copy. Before you go through that effort, check in "Where Once We Walked" (WOWW) to see if your ancestral town appears in "Sefer HaPrenumerantn". You can tell because the sources cited in WOWW for your ancestral town will have the code "HSL" to indicate it appears in "Hebrew Subscription Lists." Gary Mokotoff
