I have received a CD with a copy of the list of names and layout of
the "new" Hildesheim Jewish cemetery that is part of their main cemetery. It does not include the names >from the old cemetery in Teich Strasse, which dates back to the early 19th century or before. - The Peinestrasse cemetery includes some monuments for the holocaust victims. There are also some individual histories and other data. Contact me privately for more details. "Valentine" Given Name & New Member Introduction
#france
Joan Lieberman <JCL-RSP@...>
For the past several years I have been a member of the GermanSIG, where
I mistakenly thought I belonged. In 2001, I traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah in order to spend a week at the Family History Library. In a state best described as "ignorant hubris" I expected to be able to assemble records for my LIEBERMANN family tree (paternal) during that single week, even though I knew only the name, not the birthplace, of my great grandfather, the first to arrive in America. I left Salt Lake humbled with only two (2) LIEBERMANN records in hand. The first was a 1874 NYC marriage record for "Valentine LIEBERMANN" (born Obergeis, Hesse, Germany, 1820); the second was a 1880 US census record for "Fallentin LEIBERMANN" (born Metz, 1820). Ignoring the contradiction in the two records, I mistakenly spent several years accumulating records for the first Valentin' s family, which was Lutheran and not my father's. My great grandfather was the Fallentin LEIBERMANN born in Metz. He left France for America in 1852, listed as "Valentin ROBERS" on the manifest. After a careful review, I found only one "Valentin" listed in the 1784 Census of Jews in Alsace. He was Valentin LEVY >from Hirsingue and I am interested in finding records for his descendants, as well as for other names listed below. Joan C. You mention different AGAD. What you mean is that the vital records for the towns where your ancestors were born were registered in different Administrative towns. The Austrian laws that went into effect in 1877 identified where each town with a Jewish population registered their vital events. Although Kobylowloki (now Zhovtnevoye) and Zwiniacz (now Zvinyach) are only 5.9 miles apart, their vital events were registered in different Administrative towns -- Janow and Budzanow respectively. Janow (now Ivano Frankovo) was an Administrative town within the larger Trembowla district. Likewise, Budzanow was an Administrative town within the larger Czortkow district. Although Zwiniacz and Dzwiniaczka are close in spelling, I do not think the registrars made a mistake in their recording of the birth. Apparently, your great grandparents had their children in different towns, some of which are about 50 miles apart. I think you will find that others have this same kind of situation in their families. In my family, the predominant occupation was in the Distilling business. Many of the men were leaseholders under the Arendarz system. I have found ancestors that had children in 4 different towns, some separated by 30-50 miles. My assumption is that the family moved >from leasehold to leasehold for the greater economic opportunity. Another situation I have seen is that the pregnant mother stayed in her parents home for some births and in her husband's parents home for other births. Mark Halpern JRI-Poland AGAD Archive Coordinator ----- Original Message -----
I received my grandfather's birth record and the death records from two ofhis brothers. The two brothers were born and died in Dzwiniaczka/Dzwinogrod (Dzvinogrud?) in West Ukraine, East Galicia in 1892. These records were from Mielnica (Melnitsa Podolskaya) PSA in the Borschev region of Ternopil oblast. I had found two of his other brother's records in Borschev AGAD. What is puzzling me is my grandfather's birthplace. I had seen it in the past as Kobylowloki. On this birth record it is Zwiniacz >from the Czortkow PSA of the Ternopil oblast. Shtetl Seeker doesn't seem to place any of these close enough together for me to figure it out. Another brother was supposed to have been born in Ozeryany and the mother was >from Korolowka, all close but I am still confused. Zwiniacz looks awful similar to Dzwiniaczka but the different AGAD is throwing me. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance. Max Heffler |

Daniel Gee <DanielGee@...>
Dear Genners,
Do you have a Lazarus RADLOWSKY (or anyone similar) on your family tree? Lazarus (Lazar?) was probably born around 1850 in Poland. He lived at 5 Mathilda Street in London and his cousins were called GOLDSTEIN. RADLOWSKY may also have been spelt RADLOWSKI, but I guess, was pronounced Rad-loff-ski. If any bells ring, please email me privately! Daniel Gleek in London |

Searching Surname - BELLUCK

Frances Merrill <fmerrill1@...>
I am researching my grandfather's family history. Samuel BELLUCK was born March
12, 1884 in Minsk, Russia. His father's name was Julian or Julius and he may have been a tailor. The family spoke Yiddish (in case this is of any importance). I have searched numerous Belarus websites and cannot find a surname which is spelled or sounds like 'BELLUCK". I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge about the surname and possibly forward me information. Thank you, Frances Merrill, North Andover,MA (fmerrill1@...) |
