Hallo Litvaksiggers,
I am looking for a HURWITZ family, Levi'im, and possibly >from Poneviscz (spelling?). There is one factor which sets this family aside >from other HURWITZ families, and that is that they have a family custom of not eating Turkey. Apparently a distant ancestor once saw a Turkey attacking a "rat" and felt it to be a non-kosher (Treif) Animal. I am in touch with an EPPEL family >from Dublin, Ireland, who have the same custom for the same reasons, and there is, I believe, an EPPEL/HURWITZ connection but so far, I have not found it. My main objective is to find the shtetle where the HURWITZ family came from. The information I was given is that the HURWITZ family came >from Kovno, possibly Poneviscz. The family names are Moshe Shimon (Simon) HURWITZ married to Tilly Laura LOON. Father of Moshe was JOSEPH HURWITZ married to Rose. children of Moshe Shimon HURWITZ were, Solomon, Harry Edward, Ada and Freda Molly HURWITZ. I have been given the address of the Horowitz foundation Many thanks Anne Lapedus Brest (ex Dublin, Ireland, Sandton South Africa researching LAPEDUS (Vieksniai, Lithuania), KAHN (Vieksniai, Lithuania) KARLIN (Zagera, Lithuania) MARCUS (Ackmene, Lithuania) KLAPMAN (Ackmene, Lithuania) , ORKIN (Zagera, Lithuania) ORKIN ( Yaneshik/Yoniskis) Lithuania, MIRRELSON (Kourland, Latvia and Kurshan, Lithuania) S(C)HILLMAN (Kreutzburg/Krustpils, Latvia) BREST (Bauska, Latvia) NOVGOROD (Yaneshik/Joniskis , Alte Zagera, Lithuania) CHEIN (Unknown), CHAVKIN (unknown), GRüNBORG/GRIMBORG/GRUENBERGER (Galats, Bucaresti, Romania) and POSKLENSKI/POSKLINSKI/POSLINSKY (Poland). Before Transcarpathia???

Adam Smith <ajsmith98@...>
Hi,
I was wondering if people had any thoughts for new avenues of research for my Oberlander family. The family lived in Chinadievo, near Mukachevo as early as the 1850's. However, I recently checked an 1843 Tax Census which indicated that they were not living there at the time. In fact, there were no Oberlanders in Bereg county. So, I would like to figure out where they came from. I know that historically, there was a migration >from Galicia, but is there any way to prove it? I would appreciate any thoughts or ideas. Sincerely, Adam Smith New York, NY Searching: TAMBOR: any SAPSOWITZ: Horinchovo, Iza, Khust OBERLANDER: Chinadievo, Nove Davydkovo, Miskolc, Tarpa |

Name on gravestone
#hungary
Lawrence Korman <korman3@...>
My great grandmother in Budapest was Katalin Krausz, born Katalin Back. Her
father was known as Wolf, Farkas and Wilhem Back, according to the various records that I have relating to him. On Katalin's gravestone I expected to see her father's hebrew name as Zev, but that is not what is inscribed. The name that is there makes no sense to me. I am hoping that it makes sense to someone who reads this SIG. The name is spelled "hay yud yud resh hay" or "hay yud yud resh chet". The last letter is especially difficult to read on my photograph. Any guesses? Please reply privately and ignore the message you will get about a spam filter. I'll get your e-mail. Thanks Debbi Korman Van Nuys, CA |

HOLLANDER and HERLINGER
#hungary

In a list of people who registered for aliyah >from Budapest in 1944, we have the
couples Sandor (b. 1905) and Jolan (1903) HERLINGER and Adolf and Ilona (1890) HOLLANDER. There is no particular connection between these two couples (so far as I know at this point). Sandor's mother is a Pickholz and Ilona's maiden name is Pickholz, hence my interest. The files were closed without followup in 1944. I haven't a clue what happened to either family and would be pleased to hear if anyone recognizes them. Israel Pickholtz |
