Negocyant Translation Thanks #poland

Rebecca Fenning <macguffin317@...>

Thanks to all who offered an explanation for the word "negocyant" (which,
for others interested, is not Polish, but French, and means businessman or
trader). I feel a little stupid for not realizing this myself, after taking
6 years of French, but my excuse is that that was a long time ago!

Thanks everyone for your prompt willingness to help me out!

Searching the database - correction #poland

Pat & Gerry O'Brien <obrieng@...>

Dear All

My suggestion the other day for searching the database was slightly
misleading and should read:

Go to Jewish Records Indexing - Poland
Go to Search Database
Go to end
In "Search for SURNAME or TOWN" - Key in Surname only
Make sure "Daitch-Mokotoff Soundex" is on
Do not enter or change anything in the other fields

Good Luck

Pat

Rebecca Fenning of Los Angeles, CA asks on 27 July 2004 on the
meaning of *negocyant* as an occupation of her gt gt grandfather
Pinkas KALISCH >from Lwow [Lemberg].:

It means merchant or dealer and is derived >from the French "negotiant"
and also used in English and archaic Austrian-German ie someone who
negotiates prices.

Austrians used many French word in the 19th century and remember
Lemberg was part of the Habsburg Empire at that time.

Dear community,

The information below should be helpful to those of
you who are doing deceased American physician
research.

According to the A.M.A., as a general policy, the AMA
Department of Records Management and Archives refers
all questions concerning deceased physicians to two
outside sites that house the AMA's Deceased Physician
Records 1804-1969 on microform. The AMA no longer
holds these records.

Site #1 - The National Genealogy Society, 4527 17th
St. North, Arlington, VA 22207-2399;
<http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/library/Deceasedphysicians.htm>;
1-800-473-0060.

Site#2 - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints, Family History Library, 35. N. West Temple,
Salt Lake City, Utah 84150; www.lds.org. You can call
their 1-800 number for the location of a family
history research center near you at 1-800-240-2331.

Both of these sites are researcher-friendly and should
provide you with excellent service. the American

Best of luck in your research!

Re: Where is town "Lito" (in the province of Courland)? #general

opined:

I recently obtained the British Naturalisation application forms
for my greatgrandfather Abraham Isaac COHEN. It was stated in
these forms that his parents were Phineas and Hannah COHEN, and
that Abraham was born in 1848 in "Lito, in the province of
Courland". I have been unable to find this town on a map and I
wonder if someone who is familiar with Courland could help me
locate this place or suggest possibilities. The word Lito
is written very clearly on the form, but there could well have
been a mistake between hearing the word spoken by someone (Abraham)
whose first language was not English, and the word then being
written down by someone whose first language was English.
An additional point is that >from another source I had been
led to believe that Abraham Isaac COHEN was born in Silale;
maybe he was born in "Lito" then moved to live in Silale.
He married Leah Marie BARNETT >from Taurage and they had three
children before moving to Liverpool, England in about 1880;
they had a further three children in Liverpool.
In all probability, "Lito" was another casualty of the conversation between
the clerk and your non-English-speaking relative. "Lita", which may well
have been heard as "Lito" by the clerk, means "Lithuania", which is
compatible with "Courland".

With special thanks to Paul Cheifitz and others , I have finally after
several months of researching , discovered that my father and siblings ,
grandfather and possibly great grandfather came >from the shtetl Rozalimas .

Their family name was GER in Lithuania . Changed to HERR and HARE in South
Africa .

On Mapquest the shtetl appears 100 miles NNW of Vilnius and on the map in
the Rozalimas home page the shtetl appears near Panevezys .

Can anyone tell me in which Archives I need to search in order to get
