OPPENHEIMER and GOMPEL families

jdnorman <jdnorman@...>
Hello,
I am researching the OPPENHEIMER family of Aschenhausen, Thuringia (Grand-Duchy of Saxe-Weimar). The earliest direct ancestor I have found is Yitzak (Levi) OPPENHEIMER who settled in Aschenhausen in 1749. He arrived there >from the small town of Wasungen, (Grand Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen) Thuringia. Some of his children or more probably grand-children adopted the name of either WERTHEIMER or WESTHEIMER. The others retained the family name of OPPENHEIMER. His grandson Joseph OPPENHEIMER was a grain-dealer and married Miriam GUMPEL or GOMPEL of Meiningen, Saxe-Meiningen. Joseph OPPENHEIMER's grandsons, Hermann and Yitzak (John) emmigrated to the US in the middle of the 19th century, settling in Wilkes-Barre, PA. If anybody has any information about these families, I would be very pleased to hear >from them. Many thanks, John NORMAN London - England.

Dear Julius Cohen,
Have you tried searching for this family on the Ellis Island Database via the Stephen Morse "One Step" search engine for Jewish passengers? If you choose the "sounds like" Jacobson you will get a plethora of possibilities with variant spellings such as Jacobsen, Jacobsohn as well as Jacobson. When I tried searching for passengers whose first name started with "B" and whose last name sounded like Jacobson, these were some of the possibilities returned that might be of interest to you to check out: Jacobsohn, Basche Berczeno, Russia 1907 17 59 Jacobsohn, Base Liban, Russia 1906 Jacobson, Basche Jacobstadt 1906 20 Jacobson, Basche Minsk, Russia 1907 20 Jacobson, Bose Liverpool, England 1905 28 I briefly looked at all four of these entries and the last one seemed the most promising, as it was the only one with other Jacobsons listed on the text manifest; Aboard the Baltic sailing >from Liverpool, arriving on Dec. 8, 1905 were a family of three -- Jacobson, Bose (28), Rachel (4), and Chaike (10m) -- and all three appeared to be going to a husband named Mendel Jacobson on Ludlow Street. Could this be the family you are searching for??? As for Lithuanian records regarding this family, have you visited the LitvakSIG's All Lithuania Database aka ALD at http://www.jewishgen.org/Litvak/searchald.htm Try doing a search for the surname by soundex, and for the town via soundex. You never know what might turn up.... Shanah Tovah, Judi Langer-Surnamer Caplan Long Beach, NY

Help Finding JACOBSONS

Julius S Cohen 1
14 September 2004
Dear GENers: L’shana Tova. As a long time reader, I often have thought of providing the information I have and putting my request for help on-line to all of you. For years, my search for information on the Max and Bessie Riva JACOBSON has been unsuccessful. As the oldest grandchild, I remember hearing about Kovna Gebernia and a Shtetl near Vilnius. My oldest uncle, Louis Benjamin JACOBSON died about a month ago shortly before his 95th birthday. Unfortunately, he always was very reluctant about discussing what he knew about the family life in Lithuania. Dottie Miller’s mention of a JACOBSON ancestor finally stimulated this message. from my grandfather’s Declaration of Intention and Petition forNaturalization, he came >from Dushat, Russia. His ship arrived in Hoboken, New Jersey. His wife, Bessie (Basha Riva) (no maiden name) was born in Breslau, Russia. According to her sisters, their family name was Deits(?) Deitch(?) Deutsch(?) Max and Bessie’s first two children, daughters, my mother Rose and Aunt Anna, were reported as being born in Dushat. According to the family’s oral tradition, Grandma, Mom and Aunt Ann arrived at Ellis Island in 1905 or early 1906. Arrival site is in full agreement with the oral tradition of her sister-in-law’s family which states that she arrived, accompanied by her three sons, with Grandma and her two daughters at Ellis Island. The arrival date is estimated >from Ann’s March, 1905 birth date in Dushat and my Uncle Julius’ December, 1906 birth date in New York City. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Hurleyville, Sullivan County, New York. All of my deceased family members are buried in the Jewish Cemetery, Hurleyville New York. A Township Park near Hurleyville is the site of our annual Max and Bessie JACOBSON Family Reunion. Despite years of effort, I have been unable to find any Ellis Island record of the arrival of Grandma, Mom and Aunt Ann. Further, I have been unable to find any records of the family in Lithuania. This long message is a request for help in obtaining additional information about my ancestors. In advance, thank you. Julius Cohen Ann Arbor, Michigan

Dear JGenners,
We are close to completing translation of the Yizkor Book (YB) for Rozhnyatov but we need your help to complete the job. As you can see >from the site at http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Rozniatow/Rozhnyatov.html the English portion of the YB is posted and a complete translation of the entire Hebrew portion is also posted. A portion of the Yiddish part of the YB has also been translated and posted on the web site. The YB contains a great deal of genealogical information on the residents of Rozhnyatov and the neighboring towns. So take a look and see if you can find one of your relatives. The translation has been made possible by generous donations of JGenners, marvelous translations by Isak Shteyn and Jerrold Landau, the always efficient handling of the material by Joyce Field and Lance Ackerfeld. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the contributions of all these people who have made the results available to all that wish to learn more about Rozhnyatov and the surrounding communities. The cost of translation has exhausted our funds. So we will need to rely on you to contribute to completing the translation of the remaining pages of the Yiddish portion of the YB. I urge you to contribute now so that we can complete this important project. If you wish to contribute to the book's translation over the web, please click on JewishGen's secure fund raiser page and be sure to select Rozhnyatov http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/YizkorTrans.html I urge you to also contribute an additional amount to JewishGen, which provides, at no charge, all of the expensive infrastructure for this project and all the many others that we all enjoy. For those who feel uncomfortable using credit cards on the web, you can always simply mail a check (or send a fax with credit card info) payable to JewishGen, Inc. (with a note earmarking the funds for the Rozhnyatov Yizkor Book Project) to: JewishGen, Inc. 2951 Marina Bay Dr,, Suite 130-472 League City, TX 77573 U.S./Canada Fax # (toll free): 888-539-4362 International Fax #: 1-281-535-2204 Please note that JewishGen, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization; therefore, you may be able to claim an income tax deduction for any donations, depending on your personal tax situation. I was recently advised by a fellow genealogist in Israel of the Steven
Spielberg Jewish Film Archives at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. There are films available for on-line viewing representing the various geographic homelands of our ancestors. Of particular interest to me were 2 films of Vilnius (Wilno) and Lithuania, and 1 film which included footage of Kolbuszowa, Ranizow, Sokolow Malopolski and Rzeszow. The website for accessing these films, and learning more about the archives is http://www.spielbergfilmarchive.org.il/ There is no charge for access, and I have no connection to the website. I hope you enjoy this New Year's gift, Eden Joachim Pomona, New York

While looking for a South African Pickholz family whose seven year old son ended
up in UK in 1901, I had a look at a few PICK as well, just in case. (There areseveral in JOWBR, but without any real identifying information.) One of the references is Morris Bennie (Moishe) Pick was born on 21 Oct 1883 (birthplace unknown). He died on 9 Mar 1974 in Pretoria. He married Fanny Suttner on 21 Jun 1921 in Senekal, South Africa. Is there some way I can use the marriage date to get a record that might tell us if his name had been shortened >from some form of Pickholz? Israel Pickholtz
