A story in our family is that a Jewish great-great aunt, married into a
Prince of Wales family. Since she was Jewish, they were forced to change
their name to Vales. They moved to Hungary where he was a representative of
the British Royal House.

This was approximately in 1850. We are not sure if Adolf VALES was the
original VALES or his son. Adolf married Nina FLEISHMAN. Nina and Adolf
VALES apparently lived in Pax in Hungary (spelling definitely wrong here!).
They had a daugher Emelia, who married Simon SINGER of Metloush (also wrong
spelling), Czechoslovakia. Emelia VALES SINGER died in Bratislavia on
February 2, 1946, according to her death certificate.

We have no proof that the original stroy is true, although we would like to
believe it. Does anyoen have a suggestion of how to find more information?
A letter to the Historical Society of Wales has gone unanswered.

For some time I have been researching my WELNER/GRAUER family >from Bedzin,
Poland. My mother's maiden name was WELNER (Rachel Welner). Her mother was
Chava GRAUER, born 1888.

Before my mother escape illegally to Palestine in 1939, she was an active
member of the "Gordonia" youth organisation, which I believe may have helped
her escape.

In the Bedzin Yizkor Book, there is a photo taken in 1940 of the Gordonia
local executive. Seated in the bottom row is Chana Grauer. She is identical
in looks to my mother and I am sure she must be a relative, maybe a cousin
of my mother.

I'd like to wish all of you the best for the New Year and to introduce
myself to you as the new president of the Latvia SIG. As some of you may
know I was elected president at the Latvia SIG meeting that was held at the
IAJGS annual convention this past July in Jerusalem. I am honored to be
your new president and I hope that I can live up to the position, which will
be most difficult since Martha has done such a wonderful job during her
tenure as president.

I am a relative newcomer to Jewish genealogy, having been introduced to the
subject and to the Latvia SIG by my good friend Mike Getz. Luckily, Mike and
I are almost neighbors and I plan to spend quality time with him as I get up
to speed on the issues that need to be addressed and the projects that need
to be pursued to help make the Latvia SIG an indispensable part of your
genealogy research.

In the near term I will be contacting people who I consider "activists" in
Latvian Jewish genealogy, i.e. people who have already embarked on efforts
and projects of importance to our community. I'd like to identify and
encourage other SIG members to join these activists in pursuing those and
other projects of interest. In addition, I invite each of you to consider
becoming an activist by identifying issues, problems, projects, questions,
concerns, etc. that you feel the Latvia SIG should address. Remember, this
is your SIG and it exists to service and support your needs as you embark on
or continue your genealogy research.

Again, I appreciate the honor of serving you and I hope to hear >from you as
we move into the New Year. You will certainly hear >from me as I formulate my
ideas and describe them in more detail.

anyone has seen the name Slobodkin >from Minsk circa 1907..a sister and

I know that Danny Kaye's original surname was KAMINSKY but does anyone know
where his father was born?

I seem to recall a book I glanced at some years ago (when I wasn't involved
in family research) and I think it said his father was born in the Ukraine.
Has anyone got a book on the life of Danny Kaye which states where his
ancestors came from?

My KAMINSKY grandmother and many of her brothers and sisters and many of
their children had red hair!!!!
