Re: David Gorodok #belarus

MMS <mms@...>

Dear Darlene and All,

There are 3 microfilms in the Mormon's Family Centers with vital record of
David-Horodok. One of them is transliterated and posted to <http://www.d-hk.org>.
On the left pane menu click on "Vital Records". Read carefully the introduction
and enter your search.

If you reside in the USA you can visit one of the Family History Centers and ask
for the other two microfilms, but you'll have to manually sift through them.

"Dvera" was most probably transliterated to "Dvorah".

I am trying to locate birth and death records for my grandmother : Dvera
(FISHMAN) BREGMAN born around l860 and died around l902 in David Horodok. I am also
trying to find out if that is the correct spelling for the name Dvera - or how
else it would be transliterated. That is the way it was always spelled in our
family. I also would like to find birth and death records for other members of my
family who were murdered in l941 in David Horodok.
Thank you very much.

Jews at The Alamo #general

HeyJudy123@...

Carol Zimmerman inquires whether any Jews fought at The Alamo.

I do know of one Jew, a mercenary soldier, who fought many battles on the side of the Mexicans in their turf wars, and I believe that he did fight at The Alamo as well.

His name was SAM DREBBIN (alternately, DREBIN, DRIBBEN, DRIBEN) and his family came >from "Russia," eventually settling in either Brooklyn or The Bronx. Sam, however, moved down to Mexico and spent the remainder of his life as a soldier for hire.

A fictionalized version of Sam Drebbin was a character in the recent movie, "And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself."

According to the Google search engine, his great-grandson made Aliyah and was killed in a terrorist attack in 1998.

You can use the "%" as a wildcard ... useful in case of misspellings. Use W%
or Wei% if you are trying to find Weinstein. They may have used wrong
spelling. You may use F% in given name and Wei% in surname to get close to
any possibilites of Frank Weinstein. This is all I have noticed.

Re: documents after 1900 #galicia

Mark Halpern

Polish vital records that are 100 years old or less are protected
by Polish privacy laws and the laws concerning Urzad Stanu
Cywilnego [USC] offices (local civil records offices) that are
responsible for maintaining these records. Records over 100 years
old are usually transferred to the regional Polish State Archives
branch and are then available to the public.

This is the simple answer, but in practice some records over 100
years old are not publicly available. If the register book
contains records that are both over 100 years old and less than
100 years old, that register will not be transferred to the
Archives until ALL the records are over 100 years old. Also, the
USC offices are not always prompt in transferring registers to
the Archives.

So, can you order the records? If they are at the local USC
office, a copy of the record cannot be ordered.

For more information about vital records in Poland, read
the excellent JewishGen Infofile on the subject at

Researchers who are qualified contributors to a Jewish Records
Indexing - Poland project are eligible to receive the Excel files
of the indices for their town. Since there is sometimes a delay
before these indices are added to the JRI-Poland database,
JRI-Poland has created a special form that is to be used to order
records using the JRI-Poland Shopping Basket order system. If you
have never received this form, please contact the Archive
Coordinator for your project (in this case, Przemysl). The name
and email address of the Archive Coordinator can be found on the
Town's "Your Town" page which can be reached >from the JRI-Poland
homepage at www.jri-poland.org by clicking on "Your Town" and
selecting the town name.

This special form can only be used by qualified contributors for
the specific town who have signed and returned a Database Sharing
Agreement to JRI-Poland. Also, this special form can only be used
for indices that are not yet online. Please check first to see if
indices for your town have been added to the JRI-Poland database.

JRI-Poland is an *independent* non-profit organization. The
JRI-Poland web site and database are hosted by JewishGen.

STEINBERG - Stepney, London UK #general

Andy Green has ensured that the grave of First World War soldier Private
Harry STEINBERG is marked with a star of David after discovering his
grave with a cross in Beaumont-Hamel in France. Both Harry and his
brother Emmanuel, who are thought to have enlisted on day trip to the

Andy is now looking for descendants of the brothers' family. He and
Jewish veterans are hoping they can join them in a rededication
ceremony.

The family were Hyman and Kate and siblings Rachel, Sarah, Zallig and
Lewis STEINBERG whom he thinks may have emigrated. They lived in
