The date of the letter is 17 August 1939. This is the last trace we have of these six people. Did JCA continue after the start of the war, two weeks later? Were such rescues immediately rendered completely hopeless? Were JCA records preserved? Are they available for reference? Thanks, Henry Neugass henryn@... remove 'zzz' |

Hello -
I am interested in learning the general history of the 1800-1940 Jewish communities of Klewan (Klevan) and Stobychwa in the Vohlynia region of the current Ukraine. If anyone knows this information, has access to a translated Yiskor book on these towns, or can direct me to a source, I'd be very appreciative. Barry Eisenberg Rockville, MD USA Searching - EISENBERG, ROTHSTEIN, GLASHANDLER (Glaser), GLATTSTEIN (Gladstone), FREEDMAN, MENKOWITZ, KLIGER, UGER. MODERATOR'S NOTE: A good tool to use when searching for places such as towns and villages is ShtetlSeeker. It can be found at http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/ Also try JewishGen InfoFile Index: http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/ |

In Dov Mandlebaum's response to Debbie Korman regarding Wichita
cemeteries, one additional cemetery not mentioned is the Temple Emanuel Cemetery, located between Highland Cemetery and 9th St. A list of burials there can be found at: <http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/sedgwick/cems/tempcem.txt>. Also see <http://www.jewishgen.org/cemetery/northamerica/kansas.html> for a detailed description of the Jewish cemeteries in Wichita. Eric M. Bloch Milwaukee, WI |

Dear Genners,
Thank you to the very helpful response I got to my request regarding finding Holocaust survivors. I was looking for descendants of probable family members >from a town in Germany >from which my ggg grandfather came that I had visited and where I had been told that people of my family surname had been living until 1938. I had a list of people with that last name who had escaped the Nazis and fled to the US. The unanimous suggestion was that I contact the Holocaust Museum in Washington. I asked a cousin living near a branch of the Museum to take my list and look up the names. He gave the list to a volunteer who noticed that one of the towns mentioned was the maiden name of another volunteer. When the second volunteer looked at the list, she realized that I was searching for people who were related to her! She put me in touch with the family I was seeking. As I am writing this, the Jewish Gen Discussion Group posting suggesting that one do exhaustive research before posing a question is the exact opposite of the moral of my story above. I was writing; "moral--ask questions. You never know what good advice you might receive and what good luck might follow! Dottie J, Miller San Antonio, TX USA |

Dear Fellow Jewishgenners,
Shana Tovah to all!!!!!! I am trying to locate a fairly recent "lost person". Sol MILLER was a Notary Public who worked out of the Wadsworth Pharmacy located ay 719 West 181st St. in Manhattan. The pharmacy changed hands and the current owners know nothing about the whereabouts of Sol MILLER. Since he was a Notary, I tried contacting the New York County Clerk hoping they would have information about him in their files. No such luck. Another store owner said he lived in the Bronx. The only Sol MILLER in the Bronx has a disconnected number. Any idea. I can do the legwork since I am in New York. Thank you very much in advance. Sincerely, David Priever brooklyn1960@... |

bettina glass <bettinaglass@...>
Hello, This is for those of you who might be researching a GLASS family. A
member of my GLASS family (born in Australia), according to family knowledge, "travelled the world seven times" between, say, 1897 and 1925. He visited "the Klondike, Utah, New Zealand and South Africa" (maybe elsewhere as well), as a musician (violinist). He was known, in the parlance of the times, as "The Great Julian". If anyone has encountered any reports of such concerts or recitals in newspapers of those years, including reports >from goldfields, could you please let me know? Named Isaac Samuel GLASS, he was otherwise known variously as Sam, Alf, Julian. Unfortunately, posters attesting to these events and sighted by family members, were destroyed after the death of his wife in 1973. Thank you, Bettina Glass, Far North Queensland, Australia. < bettinaglass@... > |

Help please with quotation

bettina glass <bettinaglass@...>
Hello, Can anyone help please with the correct words and appropriate
acknowledgements of a poem which I found in the front of one of the genealogy books I read in recent months? I noted it at the time on a scrap of paper and now, of course, I can't find it. I do want to include it as a quote in a project I'm currently working on. The lines go something like: "If you could see (or meet?) your ancestors all standing in a row, would you be proud of them or would you not want to know? If you could see (or meet?) your ancestors..............(something)..............................would they be proud of you?" There seem to be just two short verses. Thank you if you can help. Bettina Glass, Far North Queensland, Australia. < bettinaglass@... > |
