JRI-Poland / Gesher Galicia 2:1 Matching Initiative #galicia

Eden Joachim <esjoachim@...>

Thank you Mark Halpern, for your update on the JRI-Poland / Gesher Galicia 2
For 1 Matching Initiative. And sincere thanks to all of you out there who
made contributions to the Lezajsk (Rzeszow), Brzozow and Sanok (Sanok)
indexing projects.

Mark's message included this statement: "the Rzeszow project
for Lezajsk; and Sanok projects for Brzozow and Sanok have
already been fully funded through this joint initiative".

This statement means that the databases for the mentioned towns are
guaranteed to be added to the on-line JRI-Poland database at the appropriate
time. Researchers with an interest in these towns may still make the
qualifying contributions in order to obtain the Excel files for their towns.
For additional information, if necessary, please contact Evan Stolbach,
EStolb7395@... for Lezajsk or me for Brzozow and Sanok.

Translation of Polish records in Russian please! #poland

Ingrid Rockberger <ingridr@...>

I have received >from Poland 2 birth records in Russian >from 1871 and 1880 -
of my husband's family - Rochverger. One is almost definitely the record of
his grandfather, the other probably a cousin - as both have the same 'given
names' - a tradition of the family. I would appreciate a translation of
these records, which can be viewed at the following Viewmate addresses (Nos.
4736 and 4738).

Viewdata - short London Marriage Authorisation #lithuania

PETER HILLS <pmhills@...>

I would be very grateful for some assistance with translating the Hebrew
entries on the short London Marriage Authorisation for my grandparents
included at
Viewdata 4733 ie go to

http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=4733

When I submitted the certificate I originally asked for certain sections
only but it would be incredibly helpful for all the Hebrew to be
translated.. Only a few lines but vital for my research!

Please be kind enough to reply direct to me.

In return I would be happy to try and help with any research enquiries which
can only be done >from London.

Thank you.

Kaunas - Home Movies from 1930s #lithuania

James Platt <jrplatt@...>

I have home movies taken by my grandparents while visiting Lithuania in the
mid to late 1930s and need help identifying the towns, most or all of which
is probably Kaunas. Is there someone (or some organization) that could view
the very brief footage (5-7 minutes) to see if the towns are recognizable. I
would prefer someone in the New York City area, but would be willing to mail
the footage (VHS or DVD), if necessary.

Please note that I contacted the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New
York, which has an extensive video archive, but they have informed me that
they cannot help.

Re: Netherlands victims - Troebitz ?? #germany

Pete Vanlaw <pvan@...>

Dear GerSiggers:
I checked the link provided in the 9/22 message, looking for my uncle, Paul
REHFISCH, and his wife, Kaethe, ne FRANKEN, both of whom died in the
concentration camp at Belsen. The database provided by the Center for
Research of Dutch Jewry indicated that they had perished in Troebitz. That's
the first time I've encountered that name, and am curious to learn how it
relates to Belsen. Was Troebitz a section of Belsen, like Bergen-Belsen?

Regards, Pete Vanlaw Studio City, CA

1850 Kurenitz Records? #belarus

Ziegelman <zieg_exp@...>

Are Kurenitz (near Vileika) 1850 records soon to be online? I've noticed
that nearby Vileika's 1850 records have come online, as well as those of
Postawy, which also interest me. (Actually I'm interested in viewing 1850
(and 1860) Kurenitz records, but post-1886 records for Vileika and Postawy.)
Kind regards,

Surname SIMON, SYMAN #belarus

HeyJudy123@...

MIMI SIMON has posted information on SIMON family members buried in Mt. Hebron
cemetery in Queens, New York.

My paternal grandmother, RACHEL SIMON SEGAL, was born in 1870 (our calendar)
in the shtetl of "Ilya" in what then was the Vilna Gubernyia of the Grand Duchy of
Lithuania. Today, the town has been repartitioned into modern Belarus. (This last
detail courtesy of JewishGen.)

Recently, I was sorting through some papers and I unexpectedly found my father's
birth certificate, which I never before had seen. On this document, noted
"Brooklyn, New York, 1911," my grandmother's maiden name is given as SYMAN.

Could this surname be an error on the part of the person transcribing the
information? Or had the family first used this SYMAN spelling when they arrived in
the United States? Certainly, by the time I was a little girl, in the 1960's,
my grandmother's cousins all used the Americanized SIMON spelling.

Even allowing for the fact that this name, like all of our surnames, has been
transliterated at least once (>from Hebrew/ Yiddish to Latin, presumably English)
and, perhaps, twice, (with an intervening transliteration >from Hebrew/ Yiddish to
Cyrillic, Cyrillic to Latin), this discovery was a surprise to me.

The Simon family first lived on the Lower East Side after arriving in the United
States. Some cousins moved to The Bronx and my grandmother, with her husband and
children, to Brooklyn. There were cousins all over the New York metro area.

The SEGAL family is buried in Mt. Lebanon cemetery in Queens, not all that far
from Mt. Hebron.
And, now, it seems that there may be more cousins! The only thing that this proves
is that it always pays to use the "Soundex" to convert and transliterate names.

photos of tombstones in Philadelphia requested #general

Dave Berg <timestorm1@...>

Hi all:

Would anyone be able to take a picture of my great-grandparents’
tombstones?

They are Hyman and Clara JACOBS. They are in Montefiore
Cemetery, Rockledge, PA. Hyman is in section 16, lot 181,
#4, and Clara is in section 16, lot 180, #1. Despite the different
lot numbers, they should be next to each other.

I would greatly appreciate anyone's help.

Thank you.
