VM 4735: Names in Hungarian census 1782
#general
Florence & Henry Wellisch <kelwel@...>
Ragendorf , now called Rajka, is a small town in north-western Hungary,
about 15 miles southeast of Bratislava (Pressburg). The census of 1782 was conducted in the German language. I wonder if anyone can make out the names and professions of the first three persons on the list. I think the 3rd person is called Markus WEISSBARTL, profession Fleischhacker. But I am not sure about the first two. They seem to have the same name. You can view the document on Viewmate 4735 Henry Wellisch Toronto MODERATOR NOTE: The direct link to this image is: http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=4735 Please reply privately. |

BLOCH family in Telsiai
#general
Ted <tmargulis@...>
When Sharon Korn mssrkorn@... posted a recent request for information
about the BLOCH family of Telz, Lithuania, a bell rang for me. It's been quite some time since I worked on my maternal side of our family SOLOSKI/COHEN, MILAVETZ) but I remembered the name BLOCH and I remembered that the name had a connection to the Telz Yeshiva in Telsai, Lithuania. Sure enough, when I looked at my notes, I found that my gggrandfather, Hirsch KAPLAN had married my gggrandmother Rebecca in Memel (Klapedia) Lithuania and they had a daughter, Chasia who married E. M BLOCH, a rabbi from Telz. I am not positive, but I believe that Chasia had been living inPlunge which is about 8 km >from Telsai. from my notes, I further discovered that the rabbi and wife, along withtheir daughter and son,in law, Eliezer SOROTZKIN first moved to Cleveland, Ohio just prior to WWII. The Rabbi, was one of several rabbis who helped moved the Telz Yeshiva to Cleveland. Another distant relative was Rabbi GORDON, one of the founders of the Telz Yeshiva. Moishe Sorotzkin, the son, his wife and family eventually moved to Telz-Stone in Israel >from Cleveland, and I believe that he is the Administrative Head of the town. It's been a long time since we corresponded with Moishe, but we have talked a few times in the past. For Sharon Korn to pursue this, I would suggest that she contact Moishe Sorotzkin in Israel. I do want to thank Naomi for bringing to our attention more of the background of the BLOCH family. There is also a GORDON connection and a SOLOSKI connection. Warm Regards, Ted Margulis Palm Desert, CA http://jewishwebindex.com |

HFPJC UPDATE-PART 1-Cemetery Restoration Projects
#ukraine
hfpjc
Fellow Genners,
Well, I promised you an update on our cemetery projects, so here goes: As I may have mentioned before, Summer is the ideal season for restoration. Consequently, we have been rather heavily involved in many projects, and restored many cemeteries for which preparations had been made throughout the past winter, as well a initiated numerous new projects. Following is a list of the cemeteries, the actual restoration of which we've been involved since the last posting (to be followed in Part II by those for which restoration is being seriously considered). If you recognize any of your ancestral hometowns, and have any pertinent info which might be beneficial to the project, or have any questions regarding the projects, please don't hesitate to contact us. Digital photos of the restoration progresses are available upon request. BALMAZUJVAROS, Hungary Restored, numbered and photographed 126 tombstones. BEKESCABA, Hungary Enclosed unprotected areas of cemetery and arranged for maintenance. BICSKE, Hungary Restored, Numbered and photographed 178 Tombstones. HALMEU,Romania Erected Concrete Enclosure (large cemetery). Cut down wild and uncontrolled vegetation posing danger to grounds. Intense project-30 laborers toiled for 3-4 weeks...Project in latter phase. KISVARDA, Hungary Huge cemetery-app. 1200 tombstones. Already enclosed two unprotected sections and secured voluntary return of a portion purchased privately after WWII. Cleared weeds and overgrowth and re-erected 700 gravestones and refurbished the rest. Plans on agenda: 1. Where necessary, erect the tombstones atop foundations to ensure long-time preservation (if funds available) 2. Mapping the cemetery; Numbering and photographing each of 1200 stones. 3. Erect a memorial monument commemorating those deported during the Holocaust. 4. Publish a booklet with a brief description of the history of the Kisvarda Jewish community and the cemetery, as well as photos of the individual stones and the inscriptions. NAGYHALASZ, Hungary Project completed: New, durable, concrete enclosure. Cleaned grounds and recemented/erected the 89 tombstones. Darkened names (manually) on most stones to maximize legibility. Numbered and photographed each individual tombstone for indexing. Arranged maintenance plan. NAGYJOC, Ukraine Cleaned the grounds. LUSCA, Romania Badly damaged and neglected Erected concrete enclosure. Cleaned grounds and restored the gravestones. Built brand new Ohel to house the GRand RAbbis' graves. Photographed(by number) the 294 tombstones individually. WE are preparing to publish a pamphlet showing all the individual gravestones of the Lusca cemetery, with the inscriptions beneath, including a brief history of the Lusca cemetery and its Jewish population, as well as of the restoration project. (Note: This, of course, is the ideal post-restoration step in EVERY cemetery project-according to the availability of funds. ) Arranged for maintenance. TOKAJ, Hungary (2 cemeteries) Old cemetery: Unique in that it is situated on an island and accessible only by boat. Complete cleaning of grounds and restoration of tombstones currently in process. New Cemetery Same status as old cemetery. Cleaning and restoration of stones in process. VONYHOVE, Ukraine Erected Concrete Enclosure. Cleared incredibly littered grounds. Restored the 113 gravestones; Darkened the inscriptions(where necessary) & Numbered and photographed the stones individually. ZEMPLEN/(Zemplin), Slovakia 2 cemeteries. Concrete fencing currently being initiated to enclose both cemeteries. In part II, I will update you as to the ones for which restoration is being prepared or seriously considered. Once again, If you recognize any of these and have any info-or questions-please don't hesitate to contact me. Thank you. In the merit of honoring and preserving the resting places of our ancestors may Hashem bless us all with a Shana Tova. Visit to Kolki - trip report and pictures
#ukraine
Andrew Blumberg <ajb61@...>
Hello,
One of my cousins visited Kolki this summer and was nice enough to send me a report on his trip and many photos. He was given a tour of the town by the mayor. Among the photos are pictures of a memorial at the site of a 1942 massacre and the location of a former Jewish cemetary in Kolki. His report describes a very simple place that looks and sounds as though, in many ways, it has changed little over the decades. I've posted the report and the photos on the Internet and they can be accessed at the following links. Trip report: http://www.geocities.com/kippelmancousins/kolkitrip.htm Pictures of Kolki: http://members.bellatlantic.net/~ajb61/kolki/ Pictures of Kiev, Lvuv, Warsaw and Berlin: http://members.bellatlantic.net/~bb62/sites/ Regards, Andrew Blumberg Searching: KIPPELMAN - Kolki and Luck, Ukraine; HIMMELFARB and GIMELFARB - Kovel and Kolki, Ukraine |

Possibility for a researcher re Korostyshev and elsewhere

Late yesterday I received a reply >from Professor ChaeRan Freeze to my "An
Interesting book" message in which I talked about her book, "Jewish Marriage and Divorce in Imperial Russia." She suggested that I might want to contact XXXXXXX, one of her graduate students at Brandeis, who in turn may know of a researcher who could do some investigations in the Central State Historical Archive in Kiev "where all the Korostyshev are located." I responded that I knew who XXXXXX was and of the published studies she has written-a monograph on Kiev Jews, and a book in Russian on "Documents gathered by the Jewish Historical and Geographic Commission" (Evreiskie Dokumenty v arkhivakh Kieva, XVI-XX w." But I had to admit that I couldn't afford to hire a researcher myself. I would be interested in documents pertaining to my members of my BELKOWSKY family of Berdichev, some of whom lived in Kiev. As I mentioned yesterday to you all, my maternal great grandmother was born (I think) in Korostyshev. Also, I know that one of my grandfather's sisters lived in Kremenchug, while the daughter of another sister lived in Moscow. If some of you want me to write to XXXXXXX to ask her for a recommendation to someone who would be willing to do searches at a special group rate for documents pertaining to our respective family names, let me know and I'll see what can be done.
