I have the peitition for naturlaization for Simon ROSENTHAL and know where
her was born and when. He came to America without his parents. How can I determine his parents names? Would this information have been requested by any government authorities when he came to this country in 1910? Thanks. Marilyn Feingold USA |

My question is since he was listed as Reb, does this mean that heDear Marilyn, No, "Reb" does not mean Rabbi. "Reb" is simply Yiddish for "Mr." If the deceased was actually a rabbi he would probably have been described as "Ha-Rav ." (The Rabbi ) or as "Moreinu Rabbeinu" ("our teacher, our Rabbi") followed by his name. Judith Romney Wegner jrw@... |

Rose - thank you for the opportunity to have a glimpse of what so many of
us had missed! However, is it possible to give us the identity of individual persons in the photos, in the same order as they are shown in the pictures of speakers and smaller groups? Perhaps we can then match the names of those whose messages we often read on the JewishGen Discussion Group, etc. - but whom we have never met - to faces in the photos. Networking in another fashion! Thank you. Borders: A Meta-Comment on Alexota
#lithuania
Rabjamarx@...
The situation with Alexota, like its neighbor, Panemune, is a good examples
of how human realities help shift administrative borders and how, especially with "border towns" we should look on both sides of the border. The Neimon river, which separates Alexota and Panemune >from Kovno, has, at times, been a national border. (Napoleon, for example, launched his 1812 campaign into Russian territory by crossing the Neimon at Alexota and Panemune and attacking Kovno). At other times, (for example, under Russian rule), the Neimon marked the administrative border between Suwalk and Kovno Gubernias. The reality, however was that there were several bridges (and, at least one ferry-service I know of in the mid 19th Century) which connected Kovno with these two towns and that Jews (and commerce) flowed back and forth between them, regardless of what administrative boundaries had been decreed. By the 20th Century, Panemune and Alexota had become official suburbs of Kovno. What that means for researchers of border towns like Panemune and Alexota, is that, first, while we should expect to find and should look for the bulk of official vital records in the Gubernia to which these towns were assigned, there may be other day to day administrative records which are found "over the border." (For example, in the Kovno Gubernia records is found a list of Panemune tavern owners at a time when Panemune was located in Suwalk Gubernia). Second, given the reality of social and commercial interaction, we should be looking on both sides of the "border", for our relatives. (Several of my Bregstein family members are found not just in their home of Panemune but living next door in Alexota and "over the border" in Kovno). Third, especially for border towns, but also in areas which switched hands frequently over the centuries (such as Suwalk Gubernia), administrative records did, sometimes, move >from place to place. All repositories in an area need to be checked, both for the existence of vital records, and lesser administrative records, as well. Jeff Marx |

Svencionys Yizkor Book

steven weiss <szome@...>
Seeking person fluent in Hebrew and Yiddish and with roots in Svencionys (or
surrounding area). The Svencionys Yizkor Book Project needs six columns of Hebrew and Yiddish text to be translated into English for pro bono. The material comprises a table of contents produced for the Svencionys Yizkor Book (1965) in 1974 by Yad Vashem. The original yizkor book was published without a table of contents and thus one was produced independently of the yizkor book. A translation of the table of contents will be an invaluable help to all researchers of shtetls in Svencionys area of Vilna Gubernyia. Please contact the Svencionys Yizkor Book Project Coordinator: Niv Goldberg <ngold@...> Translations >from "Svinzian Region; Memorial Book of 23 Jewish Communities" at: http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/svencionys/svencionys.html Steven Weiss Chicago |

Lipa R <lipar@...>
I think what you have is a case of Chalitzah! According to ancient jewish
law if a man died without leaving a child, his brother is obligated to take his brother's widow as a wife. It is called Levirate marriage (see book of Ruth for one example). In modern times this is not done for several Halachic reasons. Instead a ceremony is conducted, where the widow has to undo a shoelace of the brother and "spit" on him (symbolically). This is considered a kind of divorce. Without this ceremony the woman can not legally re-marry. Lipa Roitman, Dayton, Ohio Shana Tovah! Philip SmollerI found a record of my ggrandmother. It says she was married to a man |

Does anybody know what state the cemetery "on the hill" is in? My last
and only visit was in 1979. The country was still under Soviet rule. At that time I snuck in illegally, as the whole city of Kaunas was off limits to foreigners. The cemetery was in a total state of neglect, with many tombstones overturned (included my maternal grandmother's). I forget the name of the cemetery. It is surrounded by a high cement wall. I believe it is referred to the one "af'n grinen barg". Ted Ashkenazy tia@... |
