I take the liberty to join Pamela's reminder and to
draw the attention of any new "starter" to look not only into the 1891 and 1929 trade directories but also to JGFF and JRI. I am working now on a surname index of BRZESKO and have there entries of KLAUSNER >from all the 4 sources mentioned just above. According to the official Rytro website( in Polish) the total population of Rytro in 1937 was 1,444 people out of them 45(45) Jews. The website is www.rytro.onet.pl Rytro lies south of Brzesko and if the map on Mapquest is to be believed there is a road between those 2 Shtetlach. And if Mr. Levison knows of any Klausners who married into KOENIGSBUCH family I'll would like to be the first to be informed about that. [MODERATOR NOTE: Please respond privately] Shalom >from Jerusalem Jacob Rosen Searching KOENIGSBUCH >from BRZESKO/KRAKOW/NIEPOLOMICE. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! It suggests that we are dealing with two different names here -- Moussia being a Russian name and Masha a Polish name. So now we have: (1) the transliteration Musha (and its diminutive Mushka) -- representing the pronunciations Moosha and Mooshka) and (2) the transliteration Masha -- representing a different name (often rendered in English as Marsha or Marcia). Dear genners, Dear Leah, It's far more likely that it happened the other way round. There are variants of Mary in every language for obvious reasons; they all come >from the New Testament's Virgin Mary -- whose actual Hebrew name was obviously Miryam. Down the centuries, many Jewish girls were named Miriam (after the Moses' sister in the Torah). And a Jewish Miriam would frequently be given the "local" version of her name (whether Russian or Polish or Italian or German or French or English or you-name-it) depending on where she lived. I personally knew several Anglo-Jewish women of my mother's generation who were named Mary -- but I must confess I was never comfortable with it! Judith Romney Wegner |

Istanbul marriages

Daniel Kazez <dkazez@...>
I am pleased to announce completion of a project to type the complete extant
marriage records of Istanbul--approximately 35 thousand in all, dating from the mid 1880s. Here is a list of the surnames in these records: http://www.kazez.com/~dan/Istanbul/Gen.html We are 99% finished with proofing our work. Thousands of hours of volunteer typing and proofing have gone into this work. But it all began in Istanbul. We deeply thank the Jewish community of Istanbul for their interest in our project and their non-stop assistance in helping us to meet our goal of completeness and accuracy. Dan Kazez .... Dear genners,
Masha and Moussia, as well as Mura, are derivatives of the full Russian name Maria. Jews who lived in Russia often gave their children Russian names that later became common. Leah Gordon New York |
