Rabbi Baruch EKMAN, Temple Emanu-El, San Francisco, CA #general

Ricki Zunk <nockbockle@...>

Last night we had dinner with a cousin of ours who lives in San
Francisco. During the course of the evening, while he was telling us
family stories we'd never heard before, he mentioned that he'd visited
Temple Emanu-El some time ago, and noted a photograph of Rabbi Baruch
EKMAN (apparently the first rabbi and founder). He said that Rabbi
Ekman's face was virtually identical to that of his (and my husband's)
maternal grandfather. We also noted that Baruch EKMAN was the name of
the mggf of both my husband and the cousin.

We KNOW for sure that "our" EKMAN" family lived in Szumsk, Volhynia
Guberna in the late 1890s. That's about all we know of our EKMAN roots.

I've heard that it is very common for rabbis to have genealogies
reaching back many generations. This is the first time I've found any
mention of a possible rabbinical connection. I'm not trying to shirk
from work, but is it possible that someone in JGland has some knowledge
of Rabbi Baruch EKMAN?

If so, please advise - privately nockbockle@...

Thanks,

Ricki Zunk

Re: US passport applications #general

Christa Sobczak <csjs@...>

On this same topic, I would like to ask if it was a *requirement* to have a
passport in 1919-1920. I am thinking of an ancestor who immigrated in 1905,
became a citizen in 1919 and returned to the old country in 1919 for an extended
period. My inquiry at the National Archives in Washington for his passport
application did not get any results....the ancestor's name was not found.
I would appreciate your input.
