Toronto Research Getting Starting?

Barry Spinner <bspinner@...>
To research this immigration matter, I would start looking in the "Might's
annual Directory. Personally I was very successful in tracing four families all over Toronto in 1900-1925. I used the collection in Ottawa at the Archives, but I am sure there is a set in Toronto. Start with the Ref Lib on Yonge Street. In Ottawa one can still use the original print product , even though the earliest years are very frail. Much easier to use than microfilm, obviously. A piece of advice. I tried to landmark the 'obvious year' of first entry. I was trying to save some time. I ended up cycling back and forth: 1910, 1905, 1915, 1911, etc. My research log looks very disorganized accordingly. Just start with a reasonable starting year, say 19222 , in your case ; then proceed chronologically. And another thought, when you see the family living with someone, start tracing that crew too. They are probably landschaftmen who provided accommodation. You can also use the street index to follow the business endeavours and neighbours. (Please note Canadian spelling used herein.) Then later, start thinking about finding Naturalization certificates and files (usually just the male head of household). No , I nixe this idea. They said they were British subjects >from S.A.; therefore, they would be considered citizens of Canada - same King, etc. Barry Spinner researching Spinner in Ontario and BetterSpinner in Galicia |

Heschel and the Internet
#general
haviva <havival@...>
Hi Genners,
Stacy Harris asks about Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. He was my teacher at the Jewish Theological Seminary in the early 50's. A "google" search will tell you that his dates were 1907-1972. He is listed in the Encyclopedia Judaica. His biography, "Abraham Joshua Heschel, Prophetic Witness" by Kaplan and Dresner shows a tree of his descent >from Abraham Joshua Heschel, Rebbe of Apt (1748-1825). I would also like to mention another Internet resource, the Jewish Encyclopedia at www.jewishencyclopedia.org. This site is down for repairs at the time of this posting, but is an excellent resource for many figures in Jewish history. Unfortunately, they do not have a listing for the earlier Rebbe Heschel, and were published in the early 1900's before the more recent Rabbi Heschel became known. However, I have turned to them, and found coverage of many topics of interest to genners. Haviva Langenauer, Ph.D. Palm Beach, Florida |

Sally M. Bruckheimer <sallybru@...>
Polish is a Slavic language like Russian, it is just written in Latin rather
than Cyrillic letters. So Moskowicz would be a patronymic-and the records usually have a patronymic identifying the bride, groom, witnesses, etc. The record probably names the parents of the bride and groom (if it is Napoleonic format), and, if so, that should show that his father was Moses. Sally "In Russia the children would be named a name then a pathrinomic that would end in a "wicz" for a male or "owna" for a female, but not in Poland." |

Latvia SIG #Latvia ADLER AND HOLOCAUST

crookfamily <crookfamily@...>
I am searching for family and possible Holocaust survivors.
My grandfather, Joel Meir ADLER, went >from Raseiniai in Lithuania to Johannesburg, South Africa, in the early 1900s. One sister went to Johannesburg, another to Wisconsin, USA, and a brother to Argentina. We know of at least two brothers who remained behind. I believe these brothers and their families were young enough to have been involved in the Holocaust: either they perished or survived. I wrote to Yad Vashem, who yesterday sent me six witness reports of deaths of ADLER family members >from Raseiniai and Kelme, a Shtetl about twenty kms. >from Rasein. One of the witnesses was Leah FINE of Rechov Talpiot 36 [I presume Jersusalem], a daughter and sister of four of these ADLERs, and another was Etta/Ethel RUBIN of Amidar 86/1, Bat-Yam, a niece of two victims. These documents were signed in 1957, which means the signees are today between 70 and 85 years old, if still alive. Does anyone know of the witnesses who signed the testimonies, or of any others of the ADLER family who were killed or survived the Shoah, >from the Raseiniai area? One of the ADLER sisters married a cousin BERELOWITZ, one of my great-grandfather's brothers apparently also came to the USA, and was the grandfather of Larry ADLER the reknowned musician. If any of these references ring a bell, please reply to me direct. Rev. DAVID ADLER CROOK APARTMENT #1213 NORTH 4800 SOUTH CHICAGO BEACH DRIVE CHICAGO, IL60615, USA. To supplement the helpful information about Kupel which Doug Cohen supplied
when he responded to Neil Melman's inquiry of March, 18, 2004, I found the following: At: http://www.jewishgen.org/Ukraine/Volhynia/towns/populations.htm I noted that in 1890s the Kupel's Jewish population was 2,727, which was 63% of the town's total population of 4,333. Chester G. Cohen's "Shtetl Finder Gazetteer" says that in 1912 Kupel's rabbi was Yoel Yehuda Glazer. Vol.1 of David Chapin and Ben Weinstock, "The Road >from Letichev" adds that Glazer, who was Kupel's "key" rabbi, had served as rabbi of Letichev before hia service at Kupel. In a chapter on folklore, the same book also quotes an anecdote by someone who was six years old when she and her family made a visit to Kupel. She said most of Kupel's were Zinkover chassidim, and, >from a boulder she'd climbed on, she watched Rebbe Pinkhasel, son of Khaimel of Zinkov, leave the village with his entourage, in a slowly moving carriage pulled by four horses. The shtetl's people followed the carriage, singing and dancing as they walked. Kupel was the birthplace of poet and literary scholar Chaim Bader, whose family were furriers and whose parents were "barely literate." See:http://www.forward.com/issues/2003/03.12.12/news17.bader.html from the Internet I downloaded a Volhynia Gubernia map adapted >from one madein 1899. It shows Kupel's location, northeast of Volochisk, and near the border of the Podolia Gubernia. Naomi Fatouros (nee FELDMAN) Bloomington, Indiana NFatouros@...
