Re: The search for lost OPPENHEIMERs #germany

martha <martha@...>

As long as we are checking into OPPENHEIMER, here are some families
I have been looking for:

Zacharius S. was born in New York ca. 1868. His son, Sidney Zachary
b. 1903 changed his name >from OPPENHEIMER to OGDEN. He had a daughter
Mary Jane who married Richard Barnes BRANTLEY. [By the way, the
NYTimes obit for Sidney Z. said that Mary Jane's husband was
GRANTLEY.] Zacharius S. OPPENHEIMER also had a daughter Dorothy b. ca
1907. She married a BERMAN. If anyone has any further information on
these families, it would be much appreciated.

Another unrelated OPPENHEIMER family, as far as I know, and that I am
looking for is:

Koppel OPPENHEIMER II >from Rothenburg, Oberfranken, Bavaria, Germany
and his wife Rosette KATZ. They had at least one son, Levi b. 3 Jun
1855 in Rothenburg. Levi married Rachel LEVOR b. 31 May 1854 in
Barchfeld a/d Werra, Thuengen, Germany. Rachel and Levi had 7
children. The youngest died in 1918, probably in the Great Flu
Epidemic. The family immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland in 1887 [Levi]
and in 1890 [the rest of the family]

Their oldest daughter Selma married Joseph L. WENK and had a daughter
Louise. Louise married Theodore LOEW in 1942. They had two children
that I know of, but I don't know their names or if they had any
offspring.

Levi and Rachel's son William never married and lived his entire life
in Baltimore after immigration.

Daughter Lena married Morris C. CAPLAN. I do not know of any offspring.

Daughter Bertha married Herbert COHEN. They had two daughters:
Florette Lois who was still single when her mother died, and Rita L.
who married a GOLDSTEIN. In 1958, the GOLDSTEINs' address was 7109
Campfield Rd. Baltimore, MD. I do not know if they had any
offspring. Son Ferdinand did not marry that I know of.

Son Maurice "Morris" OPPENHEIMER married Caroline KRIVILSKY and they
had two sons: Leonard, who married Sylvia STUL [I don't know about
their offspring] and Alan about whom I know nothing.

Can anyone help?

Dear FrenchSig;
I am researching my family: BIENSTOCK/ BINZTOK
and their life in Paris >from 1918 - 1942.
In doing so, I have been searching for the name of the heroic
railroad worker (chemino) in Vierzon, who helped 9 members of
my family escape Nazi occupied territory by smuggling
them onto cargo trains headed South. They survived
on a Farm in Ceyroux-Les Brisseau.
Has anyone heard of this man and know his name?

It is always difficult to figure out a Hebrew/Jewish name >from a
vernacular name because the name chosen in English may not even relate
to the original . However, saying that, the best bet on Harris is
probably Hirsch/Hertz or a variant. Since these names mean deer (in
Yiddish) they are frequently coupled with a kinnui (or coupled name) of
Zvi (or Tzvi) which has the same meaning in Hebrew, and he could have
been one of these.

Good luck.

----- >from Original Message -----

Presumably Harris was the anglicised form of a Polish/Jewish name.
Can anyone please tell me under what name he is likely to be listed in the
Kalisz records? I gather the surname was probably MAJZNER or MAYSNER.

His parents were Isaac and Sarah nee COHEN.

JRI Poland #Poland Help needed with LDS microfilms #poland

Altche Helene <altche@...>

After several months of research through 4 microfilms concerning the
year 1868 for Piotrkow Trybunalski, I found my grandmother's name in
a list of names with 'akt' number, but I could not find the detailed
birth certificate. I also found my grand mother's name (Mirla GOLDSZTEJN)
inthe JRI-Poland database, with the same 'akt' number.

Does it mean that the detailed certificate is lost, or can I still find
it in another microfilm ?

When you list a name in the JRI-Poland database, does it mean that the
birth certificate was found, or do you list any name found in the LDS
microfilms ?

KOHNs in early Chicago #general

samorai <samorai@...>

First, thanx to the person who posted the Temple Sinai - Chicago, Marriage
Database. Searching unsuccessfully for SHIRE, I aimlessly threw in my old
country family name KOENIG and discovered that my great grandparents were
married in Chicago in 1866 (family siddur inscription date confirmed).
Charles King married Henriette Kohn.

1. A Discussion Group correspondent, Rebecca Fenning (13 March 2004) was
looking for Kohns in Chicago 1873 on. Her Kohns are >from Bohemia (as is my
Henriette Kohn and Charles Koenig).

2. A return to Irving Cutler's "The Jews of Chicago" finds mention of
Abraham Kohn and 2 brothers coming to Chicago >from East Coast in 1840s.
Later, they bring their mother and other brothers and a sister to Chicago
and found a synagogue in order to hire a shochet and keep pious mom eating
according to halacha in frontier America. These Kohns are >from Bavaria
(bordering north-west Bohemia).

3. Are the Bavarian and Bohemian Kohns of Chicago related?

4. In my possession is a 1694 document of the KOENIG family concerning
property mediation by the author of a said document (unknown because
unsigned - probably a copy). The author offers his services to the Jesuits
to purchase property (land and house) >from a widow. The property in question
is near the Bavarian/Bohemian border. The period of the late 17th and early
18th c. saw a rapid spread of Jesuit colleges in the German states and
throughout the Empire. Although it is not conclusive that this document
provides evidence of Jewish mediation services in property transfer
negotiations, Kohn family liaisons between Bavaria and Bohemia at that time
might have facilitated such activity.

Any Kohn mavens on their early Chicago/Bavarian/Bohemian roots?

towns in BialyGen research area #poland

Avigdor&Laia <lbendov@...>

I am looking for the spelling of towns in the BialyGen area of interest.

1) I would appreciate corroboration of the names transliterated >from the
Hebrew:

Poliazha or Poliashe; [peh,vav,lamed,aleph,zayin-with an accent, and heh]

Yoshkes; [yud,vov,shin,kuf,samech]

Nadoszewa (near Piekutie); [nun, daled, vov, shin, yud, bet, heh]

Landawa; [lamed,nun,daled,aleph,bet, heh]

Zalesie; [zayin,aleph,lamed,ayin,samach,yud, ayin], and

Piekutie [peh, yud, yud, kuf, vov, tet, yud].

Thanks for any assistance in this matter. Most of the places are supposed
to be near Sokoly-Lapy area of NE Poland, but I was unable to find them
at least as I have tried to spell them by best guess transliteration.

2) Does anyone know of any lists forests of Poland where I can find where
Jews and partisans used to hide in during the War?
