Help tracing CHASKELBERG family of Warsaw #general

Maya Elbaz <elbazm@...>

Dear all,

I am posting this on behalf of my mother in law, a survivor from
Warsaw. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am trying to track down any surviving family of her mother, who
was killed in the Warsaw Ghetto around 1943, or was possibly on
one of the last transports >from the ghetto.
Dora JOSEFOWICZ, maiden name CHASKELBERG (or possibly spelled
CHASKIELBERG, HASKELBERG, etc.), born between 1910-1918 in
Warsaw, married Leon JOSEFOWICZ between ca. 1932-1936 in Warsaw;
they had an only child, my mother in law Gizela (Gila), in 1938.
My mother in law also remembers that her mother had at least two
brothers.
In addition, Leon JOSEFOWICZ served in the Polish army - my
mother in law is not certain if he was married before or after
his service.
There is no additional information whatsoever.

I note >from the excellent Routes to Roots Foundation website by
Miriam Weiner that the following records have survived for
Warsaw: Births 1898-1915 - at the state archives of Warsaw, and a
list of deaths at the Warsaw ghetto 1939-1942 at the Jewish
Historical Institute. Marriage and birth records for the 1930s do
not appear to have survived (or am I misinterpreting the data?
are they just somehow inaccessible?).

I would like to ask the experienced researchers how to find out
if they exist, and if so obtain - any records which might help
trace the Chaskelberg family of Warsaw. Do I write to the State
archives at Warsaw? In Polish or English? snail mail, fax, or
email? should I include any pre-paid envelope? do they require a
down-payment to look into such a request? are they likely to
refuse my request given that I do not have exact years of events?
I realize such questions have probably been asked before, but
please indulge me.

If anyone has any additional suggestions, I would be most
grateful.

My current research is focused on my ISAACS ancestors who emigrated from
Poland to England in the 1870's, settling in Birmingham. Rachel, the
oldest daughter one of my paternal grandmother (Annie WOOLF nee ISAACS)
subsequently married an Alex Levene. Rachel and Alex had two children, Fay
and Rosie. The former married someone named DALTON. If anyone knows
anyone of that name, please get in touch.

Lithuania SIG #Lithuania LITHUANIAN STATE HISTORICAL ARCHIVES #lithuania

I have learned to my amazement >from the Routes to Roots Foundation database that vital records exist for the two tiny shtetls that I am researching: Zelva (Pazelva) and Panemunelis (Panimunok). The vital records are for the years 1918-1940. Both record groups exist in: Fond/Opis/Delo : 1817/1 and are located at the LITHUANIAN STATE HISTORICAL ARCHIVES.

Has anyone seen these records first hand? Has anyone successfully ordered
copies of these records?

Thank you for any information.

Samantha Stolberg <samanthastolberg@...>

I have just started researching my ancestors in "area" of Poland (hard to
say which country as borders changed).

I know part of my family was >from Holynka, but on old maps of the area, it
says there are two Holynkas. How can I find out more information on the
this area?

My great-great grandfather was Yankel David Polak. He and his wife had
seven children; Deborah, Hannah, Simon, Sol, Samuel, Rachmael, Zalman.
Simon, Sol, and Samuel emigrated to the US in the late 1800's-early 1900's
and the surname spelling changed to Pollack. The rest were killed by the
Nazis.

Simon (my great-grandfather) married Bella Scheier, also >from a town in
Poland. They had two children Ruthe (my grandmother) and Milton "Manny",
who has been out of contact for decades.

If you have any more information on this family or the others listed below, please contact me privately at samanthastolberg@.... Thank you!

JRI Poland #Poland Nowy Dwor Maz, surnames ELFENBEJM, BERNBAUM, WAJS #poland

Modern <joachim.modern@...>

Since one year I had wonderful results with the help of JRI-Poland database, I found the reference of records in the town of Nowy Dwor, Zakroczym, Tuszyn, Brzeziny

Yesterday I got the marriage record of my g-grandfather and I found the
names of my gg-grandparents >from Nowy Dwor, Poland
They named Hersz HELFENBAUM (or ELFENBEJM, or similar spellings) and (Bayla) Laya BERNBAUM (BERONAUB)

I found in the database that they probably married in 1843 in Nowy Dwor and
I suppose that Fajga HELFENBAUM born in 1844 and Majer HELFENBAUM born in
1863 should be my g-grandfather siblings

If someone got information about thoses surnames, please contact me

Best Regards

JRI Poland #Poland GIVEN NAMES HASHA (female) & JAMES #poland

Stephen Denker <sdenker@...>

According to their gravestones, two of my Russian-Jewish grand aunts had
the name HASHA in their given names - one (the next to oldest born 1870)
was HASHA SARAH and the other (the last of 9 children born 1886) HASHA.
Their grandfather was MOISHE HAYIM and the oldest first born son was named
for him. I read one place that HASHA is a diminutive form of CHAYA derived
from HAYIM. Any confirmation?
Another brother went in the United States by the name JAMES. No one knows
his Jewish name. Could it be YACOB?
