Re: German vital records in Poland: we need your help! #germany

Daniel Teichman <daniel.teichman@...>

Dear Roger
It seems that I should be able to help with quite a few of the skills you
mentioned: I speak and read German, I have worked with Hebrew manuscripts
and also with manuscripts in Old German scripture. My problem is lack of
time. On the other hand I am so glad that I can often use all the
fantastic databases on JewishGen. So, if I can really already help you
with only one hour per week, I'll be happy to do this.

German names for Polish towns? #general

Marty Meyers <meyers01@...>

Since the Auschwitz database uses german names for towns in Poland,
can anyone point us to a link/source that will give us the german spellings
for towns in Poland. I would expect this to be an item of great interest
right now.

Thanks,

Marty

Vinnitsa, Ukraine (1998) #general

Daniel Kazez <dkazez@...>

I am trying to make contact with a woman named Mikhailova Anna Lvovna. In
1998, she lived in Vinnitsa, at the address listed on this Yad Vashem Page
of Testimony:

http://www.kazez.com/~dan/0803.Lis-Srul.jpg

She also wrote these Pages of Testimony:

http://www.kazez.com/~dan/0803.Lis.jpg
http://www.kazez.com/~dan/0803.Lys-Boris.jpg

Is there anyone reading this who lives in Ukraine and can help me contact
Mikhailova Anna Lvovna in Vinnitsa?

Ciechanow and Auschwitz online data #general

Marty Meyers <meyers01@...>

I recently searched the Auschwitz data that just came on line at
http://www.auschwitz.org.pl/szukaj/index.php/language

For more info, look at recent postings on JewishGen.

The german name for Ciechanow is apparently Zichenau.
When I search for people born in Zichenau, the response was 215 people
Searching for those living in Zichanau, the response was 262 people
When searching for those who were born and lived there, the response was
182.

By my calculations, there are
182 (born and lived there)
80 (not born but lived there)
33 (born there but lived elsewhere)
for a total of 295 individuals in this database >from Ciechanow.

Unfortunately, when the search finds more than 40 individuals,
the database returns only the fact that too many names were found.
AARGH!!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully, we'll be able to track down a method of getting to these names.
In my case, a surname search found Boruch Bordowicz who both was born
and lived in Ciechanow (and how I found the german name for the town).

If anyone finds out how to access these names (e.g. a one-step method??),
please let us all know. Even though the database contains only a tiny
fraction of those who perished at Auschwitz, almost 300 are linked to
Ciechanow.

SITE CITE: Immigrant Ship Transcribers Guild #germany

Algaze@...

I would like to thank Gary Stahl for bringing to our attention
the website of the Immigrant Ship Transcribers Guild located
at www.immigrantships.net).

It consists of lists of passengers who traveled on various
ships into the US on a variety of dates. These lists were
provided by individuals who submitted their own lists.
You can search by surname, by name of the ship or by year.

Check the web site to see if you can find your own
ancestors, or submit lists that you have compiled yourself
for inclusion on this web site. They will take any lists you
can provide; I sent them a passenger list for a ship containing
only twenty names. Their response was:

"It's length is not important as we include lists with only
one passenger...we figure that person belongs to someone."

Re: Continuing the search for SLOMEWITZ, SLOMEVITZ #general

Hilary Henkin <hilary@...>

Dear Nancy,
I have had experience with the NYC archives, asking them for specific
birth records. Like many municipal archives, when searching, they do not
stray >from the information you gave them. So, if the record has his
surname as SLOIME, or his given name as "Nate", you will get "no record
found". And if he was born in 1890 or 1892 but you didn't ask them to
check those years, you'll get "no record found".

If the indexes are available >from the Mormons, your best bet would be to
research them yourself - or perhaps some kind genner in NYC will check
for you.

Sluzewsky ~ popular name? #general

rats4me330@...

Has anyone seen this last name on graves, or anywhere?
Has anyone seen this name as a firt name? This was my
Grandfather's name before his family changed it to Zev
when they came to America. Not all sure why it was
changed. I was told it was easier to pronounce here,
more "American", lol.
I am wondering if it is popular. Maybe it's popular in
Russia? I have never met anyone or known of anyone
with this name. Would love any feedback.
Thanks,
