On August 1, O3, Shlomo Wygodny (wygodny@...) wrote that he has been unable to identify the location of Czerwony Bor, possibly in connection with Slonim.

I am sorry to say that the entry for "Czerwony Bor" in "Where We Once
Walked" (WWOW) says that the town was not found under this spelling in the listings of the US Board on Geographic Names. WWOW does have listings for:

"Czerwona" west southwest of Lublin,
"Czerwona Gora" southwsest of Lublin
Czerwona Wola" north of Przemysl
My edition of WWOW is the older one published in 1991. Perhaps the editors of the new edition may have found some information about Czerwony Bor during the last decade.

The word "czerwony" is a Polish adjective meaning "red." Most likely it's related to the Russian "czerny." I thought at first that villages named Czerwona or Czerwony have a reddish cast to the color of their local rocks vegetation or soil. I didn't find "bor" in my small Polish dictionary but I looked up "bor" in my huge Russian dictionary where it says that "bor" is a coniferous forest.

Since Mr. Wygodny was unsuccessful in trying to find his mystery town at
Jewishgen, I ventured to use the google search engine, and to my surprise I found at:

http://www.ukar.org/kateln01.shtml

a "section 4" mention of the name of this place, as meaning "red forest" and Czerwony Bor as being the location of the "remote" Czeroney Bor as being 47 kilometers north of the Treblinka I and Treblinka II camps.

At another website:

http://www.ue.eti.pg.gda.pl/~piotr/sport/eng/e_imp.html

there is a note about the winning of an "orienteering" competion at Czerwony Bor which seems to prove that Czerony Bor still exists.

At:

http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Gliederungen/Infanterieregimenter/IR3-R.htm

there is an account in German about a German regiment proceeding to "Czerwony Bor."

At:

http://www.fplib.org/friends/news/omri/1993/04/930406.html(opt,mozilla,unix,english,,new)

there is little article about Lech Walesa's observation of National Guard
troops engaging in a tactical exercize at Czerworny Bor.

There are number of other websites mentiong Czerwony Bor, some in connection with the trial of John Demjanjuk and the camp Treblinka III.

At:

http://www.zabludow.com/icchokmelmed.html

it says that many of the Jews who had been in the Bialystok Ghetto were led to the rail stations and sent to Treblinka and Auschwitz.

(The Treblinka camps were located about fifty miles northeast of Warsaw.)

Mr. Wygodny may want to do searches at Jewishgen and through the "google"
search engine for information about the Jews of Slonim.

Karlsburg museum #romania

Dear All,
I am trying to find information about the Karlsburg museum.
It might be in Rumania or Germany.I think it was destroyed during
Kristalnacht,1936.
If you have any information,I would appreciate hearing >from you.
It seems there was a display with the names of our family's descendency.
Is there a way to find out about its displays-before it was destroyed?
Thank you,
M.Sapirman
