South Africa SIG #SouthAfrica JOWBR Launched at 23rd International Conference on Jewish Genealogy
#southafrica
Susan E. King <susan.king@...>
As part of the presentation last night at this important annual
conference, JewishGen launched the JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry database (JOWBR), a compilation of burial records, photographs and information about the individual cemeteries. To help accumulate data, JewishGen initiated an "adopt a cemetery" program to encourage local genealogy societies, synagogue youth groups, Jewish federations, and other interested parties worldwide to index cemetery or landsmanschaft plot records for submission to the JOWBR project.=20 The JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry database is one of the largest and most sophisticated efforts undertaken by JewishGen to date. Jewish cemeteries throughout the world are threatened with vandalism and even extinction. It is vitally important to preserve information on existing Jewish cemeteries so future generations will have the benefit of this aspect of cultural heritage. The database features 643 cemeteries, 314,778 burial records, and 11,461 tombstone photographs representing cemeteries in 25 countries. In the coming year, JewishGen intends to include information for an additional 242 cemeteries, 150,461 burial records and 22,400 tombstone images >from 36 cemeteries in Eastern Europe. We expect to see the database grow quickly as those researching their family history contribute information about the cemeteries of their ancestral towns and also through our partnerships with cemetery associations throughout the world to include the Jewish Cemetery Association of Massachusetts, the Johannesburg Jewish Helping Hand & Burial Society (Chevra Kadisha), and the Texas Jewish Historical Society have already provided thousands of records. The database is now live and located at the following URL: http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/jowbr Susan Susan E. King Managing Director JewishGen Inc. |

Barbara & Steve Wasser <swass@...>
For more information you may want to read Ruth Gruber's book,
"Haven". Ms. Gruber was a special assistant to Harol Ickes and was given the rank of simulated general, in case she was shot down by Nazi planes and taken prisoner. It's a fascinating book and does have photos and names of some of those who were interred there. << a group of about 1,000 JewsBarbara Wasser swass@... Niskayuna, NY |

NY Publ. Library help

Neil@...
In 1866, Henry H. Havens published the book General
Index to the Laws of the State of New York. It was published in Albany by Weed, Parsons & Co. In volume one, which covers 1777-1857, Havens included a list entitled Aliens Authorized to Purchase and Hold Real Estate in this State. The name and reference I am interested in is - YEAR 1818 Narr, Joshua, Statutes, 283. Question is can anyone tell me what 283 means and if not if anyone when going to the Library, can check it out for me. Thanks, NEIL ROSENSTEIN. MODERATOR NOTE: Please respond privately |

Yiddish Newspaper "The Big Stick"

Hello -
I recently obtained a photograph depicting women >from the "United Hebrew Trades" in New York City in 1911. The women were attending a memorial service for the victims of the Triangle Fire, which killed over 100 people. A close look at the photo reveals that the women are standing in front of the office of "The Big Stick," a Yiddish-language newspaper that was published between 1909 and 1927. Does anyone know the newspaper's address in 1911? I would like to take a photo of the same location as it appears today for a "then and now"-type comparison. If anyone would like a jpg of this photo, e-mail me and I'll send it to you. It can also be viewed at Cornell's Triangle Fire website. Viewmate 2639, 2640 - FRIEDMAN Photographs
#general
Dream Builder <dreambuilder@...>
I have posted two photographs to the JewishGen Viewmate. They
are of my FRIEDMAN ancestors. The first photograph is of Barnet(t) David FRIEDMAN and his wife Sarah THURLIN / TURCHIN taken circa 1900 New York City, NY, USA. The family may have been >from Kiev, Ukraine. The second is of their children, my grandfather and several of his sisters, taken circa 1903 New York City, NY, USA. Infant on left is Anna / Natalie / Nettie FRIEDMAN (LENETT). Second >from left is my paternal grandfather Hirsch FRIEDMAN. Third from left is probably Lena FRIEDMAN (KURLAND). Fourthand fifth >from left are probably Fannie / Fanny FRIEDMAN (FRIEDMAN) and Ida FRIEDMAN (SCHIFF?). An older sister, Rose FRIEDMAN (SCHECK) was left behind in Russia (she eventually made her way to the USA) and is not in the photograph. There is a faint possibility that there are other siblings, but I have no positive proof of such. http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=2639 http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=2640 Please let me know if you recognize them or if you can tell me anything about them >from the details of the photograph. Also, note especially the slant of the eyes (outer corners tilted up). This trait has held true for several generations of my family and is not very common among Jews most of whom have downward tilting eyes or upside-down half-moons. Their eyes may hold clues to where they were from. My sister and I look just like Sarah. Vicki Ina Friedman Ball Ground, GA, USA dreambuilder@... Researching: BECK, CHORNEY, DUBIN(SKY), FRIEDMAN, LISANSKY, RECHMAN, SK(O)LOFF, THURLIN / TURCHIN, ZEIDELMAN (Russian Empire to United States approx. 1880-1910) |
