Hi guys,

I have been working for years on the largest rescue of Jews >from a
train to Auschwitz. This story happenned on September 11, 1942 in my
hometown of Lille (Nord, France). 23 members of the SNCF decided to
hide and evacuate 39 people I identified as being rescued that day.
Eventually 513 Jews >from Northern France were sent to Auschwitz via
Malines (Belgium). 18 survived....

According to Serge Klarsfeld - famous French lawyer and hidden child
himself - this event is the largest in a French train station. For the
USHMM in Washington D.C. it is one if not the largest evacuation of a
train to Auschwitz in Europe.

I am still looking for rescued people - I found one in Long Island, NY
last Sunday. She is 91 years old but still remembers the man who saved
her life - and I have a couple of names of potentially rescued.

One of them is called Simon Rosepik. He was 8 when he was arrested on
September 11, 1942 (must have been born in 1933 or 1934). His mom and
sister stayed on the train and were both murdered in Auschwitz. His
father was arrested in 1943 and eventually died in Auschwitz too.

I have been told that he moved to the US but cannot find him. Any tips
or help would be great.

are her sons?

parents. After all the usual information, the record adds: "They
also stated that before entering into marriage they had conceived during
their cohabitation a son, Judka, born in the local town on September 1/13
1868. They recognize him as their own by this marriage record, and on the
basis of article 291 of the Civil Code of the Kingdom of Poland, they secure
for him the status and rights of a legitimate child." I worked out that
this child was conceived when my great grandparents were about 16 years
old! I am asking all our experts if this was unusual -- or not? The
marriage took place in December 1869 in Kaluszyn.

On certain records for an ancestor it says Gessel or Hessel
(sometimes with only one 's'). But then we encountered records
that say Kushel. Could these three options be the same name/person?>

I think that Gesel and Hesel are the same name. There is no letter
"H" in the Russian alphabet. Things spelled with "H" are normally
rendered as "G" in Russian.

I would have thought that Kushel would be the same name also because
it sounds alike, but Alexander Beider in his Dictionary of
Ashkenazic Given Names (2001) says that my untutored intuition may be
incorrect.

He says that Kushel is a variant on Ikusiel, while Hesel could be a
variant on Hese, a name borrowed >from Christians in the Rhineland, or
Yoshue (Joshua). At the end of his entry for Hese, he then says that
Hese and its derivatives might by a Christian-sounding derivative for
a Jewish-sounding name like Ikheskl.

My read of all this learning is that those three names probably belong
to the same person, but there is a shade of doubt about it.

I've posted a vital record in Polish for which I need a translation. I
am researching aspects of the film, Fiddler on the Roof. I need to
know what the lettering says on the upper left of the image. It is on
the building seen in the film as Motel's tailor shop but might refer
to something completely different. The lettering appears to be Hebrew
and Russian characters, but some of the words could be Yiddish. I
realize the image is very poor, but any help would be appreciated.

Gessel/Hessel. Could definitely be the same name. H is often rendered as a G in
Russian, i.e German for Herman. K is also possible as the Russian equivalent for
an H sound is transliterated as Kh.
