Thanks re: Jewish charities in London ca. 1900 #general

David Scriven

Thank you, everyone, for your responses. Some of you have requested
that I report back. The consensus opinion is that the two charities
involved are the "Poor Jews Temporary Shelter" and "The Jewish Board
of Guardians".

I have accessed the database of the shelter kept at the University of
Cape Town: http://www.jewishroots.uct.ac.za/Shelter.aspx but have
been unable to find any mention of my great-uncle. However, the great
majority of records seem to represent people passing through on their
way elsewhere and, at least on the pages I saw, there were a very large
number having birthplaces in Lithuania and none >from Russia, so I have
to wonder if this is the correct charity (or the database is not
complete)

My great-uncle writes that he was smuggled out of Russia to escape the
Tsar's army (conscription was increased because of the Russo-Japanese
war) but had only enough money to pay for transit to England. Once out
of Russia he wrote that they (a group of twelve) were handed over to an
agent (named Lavono) and made their way to London via Rotterdam. He was
astonished that they could cross European borders without anyone paying
any attention to them (which was a good thing - he had no passport).
They were met by an English Jew (whose Yiddish my great-uncle found
difficult to understand) and were taken to the charitable institution
(Shelter?)where they had to give information to the clerks as to their
"financial situation, our professions abroad, chances of working, etc."

I'll see what I can find out about records in the "Jewish Board of
Guardians"

Re: Argentinian immigration records #general

Marion Werle <werleme@...>

Another source of immigration information, in addition to Daniel
Horowitz's suggestion is the collection called "Hamburg Passenger
Lists, 1850-1934" on Ancestry.com, which includes ships destined for
Argentina. I found a relative of mine headed to Buenos Aires from
Latvia listed in that collection. If you don't have a world
subscription, you can access it at either a public library or
FamilySearch center.

Good luck!

Arrival from Ukraine into NY 1902-3 #general

Barbara S. Weitz

I would appreciate it if anyone can help me find my grandfather on a
Passenger List >from around 1903. His name was Samuel (Schlema)
WEINSTEIN (Wainstein) and he was >from Kamenetz-Podolsky, Ukraine
(Russia). His Petition for Naturalization gives his arrival in the
U.S. as 22 June 1903. His U.S. Declaration of Intention states he left
from Rotterdam on the S.S. Statendam on 12 June 1903.
With help >from many of you who read the various message boards, I’ve
been able to gather a lot of information about him and his family —
as well as when the others in the family arrived! But, so far, no one
has been able to find the entry for *his* arrival.
Hope someone can help.

My late father-in-Law was the principal of the L.A. Jewish Academy
during 1947. We found several pictures of various classes (teacher
and students) of that year. Unfortunately there are no comments on
the back who are the teachers or students.

If anyone wants copies of these pictures we'll be happy to send them.

On first glance, without further research, "Board" could refer to the
Board of Guardians which was established under the UK Poor Law to
assist the poor. It could be the Board of Guardians of British Jews
but I'm not clear if they distribute aid or are just a representative
body. My booba got money >from one or other Board.

Seeking help with a missing person, Russia, 1920s #general

Lea Haber Gedalia <leahgedalia@...>

Dear friends
I am seeking help with a case of a missing person.
Moshe Gueshtel born in Telekhany was incarcerated in Turinsk ,
Sverdelovsk Oblast (in the Urals) . He sent a letter to his family in
1925 to announce his freedom and to let them know that he has passed
the lawyers bar and got a job as a lawyer in Dzerzhinsky in the area
of Nizhny Tagil, So I believe he was a communist.
Nothing was ever heard >from him after .
Any suggestions how to go about this mystery ?
All the Best

Re: using different surname than father: why? #general

Sheldon Dan <sheldan1955@...>

Deborah,

I think I have found many instances where this has happened. In one
of my lines, the brother of my great-grandmother, Zipora Annie SOBOTA,
adopted the surname BROADMAN, which was their mother's maiden name.
In fact, there have been many places where the surname suddenly
changed to another, which was carried through by the descendants.
It is a good idea to note these changes in your tree when they happen.
