The daughter Sunny Lorraine Mann has an obituary in The Herald News (Passaic) of 27 December 1960. Her parents were her only survivors.
It's worth noting that in the same house in 1940 there was a David and Dora Kaplan. Could this be a relative? Finally the 1940 seems to have added 10 years to Sam's age - vs the earlier censuses. -- Paul Hattori |

I am researching "Husin" from Belarus. My father's side of the family. My great grandfather came over with his wife - maiden name Zeitlin. Possibly the town was Vietka. We are Jewish. Does anyone have any info? Thanks.

I think the question is how do we know that this is the correct Anne Kaplan? Based on the information provided so far, there's nothing to show that, e.g. no marriage or death record for Anna that would show her husband's or child's name, no death record for Ida (the Sam in the 1940 census is a widower), etc.

Unfortunately, the Anne Kaplan Mann found by Barbara on the 1940 census in Paterson, NJ, living with her father Sam Kaplan, is not the correct Anne Kaplan.
On the 1940 census Sam, Ida & son Max Kaplan are living in Brooklyn at 2115 Mermaid Avenue. They briefly moved to Brooklyn and then back to NJ. I'm sure it's the correct family based on Max's occupation of working at General Motors, which matches the info in his WW11 draft card, and also the family states on the census that they were living in Elizabeth, NJ in 1935, which matches. It is difficult to search for someone when there are so many people with the same name! Best regards, Sherri Bobish |

This week's Yizkor book excerpt on the JewishGen Facebook page

Bruce Drake
At the end of each week, we have been featuring excerpts from Yizkor books in JewishGen's archive. You can find the archive of past Yizkor book excerpts here: https://bit.ly/3aCH1ak. If you are not familiar with the JewishGen Yizkor Book Project, please click on this link: http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/faq.html When the dread time arrived in Jewish towns when boys turning 21 had to enroll in the military, fathers would groan and mothers wring their hands, but the youths were less dispirited: there were two ways that they dealt with it. One was to spend the next few weeks following regimens that might get them rejected, like not eating and drinking enough. The other way of passing time during the weeks of “self-torture” was conjuring up pranks to play. As “An Event in the Shtetl” from the Yizkor book of Mlyniv & Muravytsi (Ukraine) says: “When one is young, one can make a comedy out of a tragedy.” In this case, the youths wanted to play a special prank that the shtetl would remember and consulted Shmuel, the town joker. “I have a plan for you,” Shmuel the joker said. “Today is Thursday night and tomorrow is Friday before Shabbes. And Jews have to go Friday to the bath to steam their bones and to wash in honor of Shabbes. I want you to heat up the community bath, and to let all the craftsmen and the poor to come in for free, without money.” This predictably did not delight the more well-to-do. The chapter recounts how it all played out. The full Mlyniv & Muravytsi book in translation is now available in print. Sharon,
Chaim D. Greenberg enlisted in The U.S. Army June 11, 1898. He served during The Spanish American War. He appears to have been, at one point, in the hospital corps at Montauk (out on Long Island, NY) His rank was Private. He served in Company K, Regiment 7th infantry. A mention of Josiah Simpson Hospital in VA is noted. He was discharged Nov. 7th, 1898. Above info from Ancestry.com database: U.S., Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914 He possibly served at Camp Wikoff (Montauk Point, Long Island, New York) This site describes the hospital set up for returning soldiers and has a photo. https://www.spanamwar.com/campwikoff The card that you scanned to your post is from the Ancestry database titled: U.S., Civil War Pension Index: General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934 The title is misleading, since it includes not only Civil War pensions, but also a general index to pension files. Chaim D. Greenberg applied for a pension in 1930 and received it in 1931. He served in The Spanish American War (not The Civil War, as he was not even born during the time of that war in the first half of the 1860's.) Chaim is also listed in the Ancestry database: U.S., Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914 There is a lot of information if you look at the actual page in the database. He was born in Minsk, and lots of other info, including a mention of being at Josiah Simpson Hospital in VA, which his other card mentioned (noted above.) Good luck in your search, Sherri Bobish Searching: RATOWSKY / CHAIMSON (Ariogala, Lith.); LEFFENFELD / FINK / KALTER (Daliowa & Jasliska, Pol.) BOJDA / BLEIWEISS (Tarnow & Tarnobrzeg, Pol.); WALTZMAN / WALZMAN (Ustrzyki Dolne, Pol.) LEVY (Tyrawa Woloska, Pol.); SOLON / SOLAN / SOKOLSKY (Grodek, Bialystok, Pol.) Rodney Eisfelder
Sharon,
Chaim Greenberg was 82 or 83 when he died in 1953, so he was born around 1870. That makes him a bit too young to have served in the US Civil War. His death certificate states that he served in the Spanish American war which was in 1898, when he was in his late 20s. The inscription on his stone "Erected by East Side Post J.W.V. #4" refers to the "Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America". While Post #4 may be defunct, the organization still exists. See: https://www.jwv.org/ I hope this helps, Rodney Eisfelder Melbourne, Australia |

I finally found the right Chaim Greenberg and got his death certificate which confirms the right people.... I was able to find out where he is buried at. I got a picture. I have never seen this text on the bottom of his stone before. Would anyone know what this means? I understand that he was injured while he was a soldier for the US Army in 1930 during the U.S. Civil War. Would they have any info on Chaim's life? He was estranged from his family. The next of kin was his nephew Hyman Atotsky. Chaim is my great grandmother Shoshana's brother...

On my maternal grandmother's marriage certificate, she listed her mother's maiden name as RUBIN. She may have been confused because her mother's maiden name was definitely REICHMAN/RAJCHMAN (or alternate spelling version of this name). She also told me that she (Gittel/Gus/Gertrude MICHALOWICZ aka LEVINE & SCHULTZ) was named for her grandmother (actual first name presently unknown). Her two sisters' daughters (her nieces) also were named Gus/Gussie, assumedly in honor of the same person.) My grandmother's paternal grandmother was quite probably Gittel. However, she is listed on JRI-Poland as "Gittel ZOLNA/ZOLNY", not RUBIN. I know that the name RUBIN is part of my family because I have a few photos labeled Harry & Fannie RUBIN & children, relationship w/i family presently unknown. Because Gittel ZOLNA was probably born in the first quarter of the 19th C. Could this be another case of "dynamic" or "fluid" (as opposed to permanent) last names?? (The family mainly lived in Lodz/Tomaszow Mazowiecki) Thank you, Marilyn Robinson Florida MICHALOWICZ, ZOLNA, JOSKO/JOSKOWICZ, RUBIN, LEVINE, LURIA, TAFLOWICZ----Lodz, Tomaszow Mazowiecki, Warsaw. |
