Where would I find naturalization and citizenship applications?

Cory Streisinger <corys@...>
Dear Fraida:
You don't give the dates for these naturalizations, but if they were after 1906, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) will have files which usually contain the Declaration of Intent and the Petition for Naturalization. You can get these through a Freedom of Information Act request to the INS. It can take a long time, so be patient! Details are available at: http://www.ins.usdoj.gov/graphics/aboutins/history/NatzRec/NATREC.htm Cory Streisinger Portland, Oregon corys@... |

Hello all,
I need help translating what I believe to be a letter written in Yiddish for when my g-grandfather died. Came across it about two months ago and have been unable to translate it. Included in the letter is a photograph of my grandfather sitting on his father's lap as well as my grandfather's brother sitting on the wall. I am also told that the two men standing in the background are Ben-Gurion and Ben-Zvi though I do not know which is which. The quality of the photo is not all that great and the letter is almost a page long. I do not know if I am asking too much, but I do not know where else to turn to. The letter can be found at: http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/source/vm1716.html Please respond to me directly at: johnebos@... It was wonderful to see so many Litvaks at the Toronto Conference - about 250 attended my talk on the All Lithuania Database (ALD), and at least 100 attended the LitvakSIG General Meeting where they shared their names, locations, and the areas that they were researching. There were many other programs of Litvak interest whether or not specifically designated as such.
We'd love to hear >from those who attended, and to be able to share your experiences vicariously. If you learned something at the conference that would be of interest to other Litvaks, please write in to the Digest to let everyone else share the new findings or insights gained in Toronto. Toronto Feedback

LindaJim Morzillo <jmorzil1@...>
Hi all,
The Toronto Conference was the first I ever attended and there were quite a few talks that were given at the same time as well as other events which resulted in having to make some choices and set priorities. I attended the Birds-of-a Feather meeting and the presentation by Ed Rosenbaum on the Belarus SIG website. I also attended part of the Belarussian Archives talk but missed the Belarus SIG meeting on Sunday. The Birds-of-a-Feather meeting was a great opportunity to meet other Belarus researchers, hearing names and places was helpful, but many people left before or as soon as the introductions were over. I would have liked to be able to talk more one-on-one with people, perhaps next time a round table set-up with people interested in specific areas could meet at designated tables for a part of the time. Ed's presentation was quite informative because the website is growing by leaps and bounds. Even though it has become the SIG website others strive to equal, it can be intimidating for a newcomer as well as for someone who has only a limited amount of time to pursue genealogy and therefore does not use the website often. It takes quite a bit of time to explore and once a person learns how it is organized, they can quickly find relevant information. Having the website on the screen to illustrate its use made this talk especially informative. We also heard about the ambitious plans to make this website even more useful for researchers. This is one talk that should be repeated at each convention, perhaps there can even be two parts, one for novices and one for more experienced users. The Belarussian Archives speaker, Oleg, had much to say, but unfortunately, his very loud voice was the reason I could not stay and I went to hear something else. The Sunday SIG meeting was missed: I attended a family luncheon with my Canadian relatives; my second cousin who I had last seen 40 years ago when we were teenagers and who was a presenter at this conference as well as her (and my), extended family who I met for the first time. Now that was great! Linda Morzillo Saratoga Springs, NY Jmorzil1@... I took you up on your challenge. I found someone who has the same name as my great-great-great grandfather. This same name was given to a few of his descendants. I printed my family tree to a PDF file, so that I wouldn=92t have to explain a lot in my message, and attached it to the email. Two days later I got a reply >from someone who I now identify as a distant cousin. He reviewed the tree with his mother, and they were able to confirm the relationship as well as give me information on several other living relatives who all share a common ancestor with me.=20 I was thrilled to find someone on the first try, and plan to do the same on a more wide scale basis.=20 Thanks!=20 Andrew Blumberg -----Original Message-----

(Remember that there is no D/M option and you will have to do multiple searches on surname spelling variants). After getting the search results with the webpages that contain my surname, I carefully review the page and try to find an email address for the person(s) with the surname. When there is no email address, I send a message to the webmaster of the page and ask if they can put me in contact with the person. I then send a message explaining that I am an amateur genealogist doing research on the XXXXX family and explain that I am looking for additional family members and provide the area >from where my family originated, along with some minimal details. I ask them if their family came >from the same area and to provide as much information as possible that might help establish a family relationship. Then I wait for a reply! In most cases I do get one, sometimes many months after my message was sent. The delays are sometimes because they must find someone to translate the message I sent and compose a return message in English, although I have received messages back in Russian. |

behalf, Edward Rosenbaum <erosenbaum@...> wrote in part: " - Joanne Saltman and Paula Zieselman, for the thankless job ofcollected over 5000 names." For myself, anonymous Joanne and Paula may be, but they certainly have my thanks everyday that I log onto this group. And Jerry Seligsohn's work is a mitzvah for perhaps hundreds of people he will never know and is of no relation to. I wasn't able to be in Toronto, but these two particular mentions prompted me to make public my personal appreciation of what these folks, and the others, are doing for the rest of us. Thanks!
