Could be `1916?

Nun,pay,tet,resh,hay - niftera(for female) or "passed away".
Second word - Shnat=Shana(year).
"tav,ayin,vav" - I think a letter is missing here.

Success At Last #general

Joyce Eastman <wldwoman1@...>

I just wanted to take the time to relate my experience in trying to find a
cousin of mine who is a doctor in Bratislava. Through the marvels of
posting in the JewishGen digest and various SIG digests I was able to
contact someone online with the same last name as my cousin, who
miraculously was able to locate the address of my cousin in Bratislava
(even though he lived in Prague). His wife had professional contacts in
Bratislava which enabled her to do this for me. After writing to my
cousin a few times in the last two years I had given up any hope of
hearing >from him. After believing that he did not want any contact with
other members of the family, it turns out that he was looking for someone
he could trust to relate the horrors of his family's past to me in
English. This finallly occurred when a childhood friend of his came to
visit him recently >from Australia, and I finally received a letter >from
him two days ago. Now we have someone who is willing to assist us in
continuing our relationship.

I guess the moral of the story is never give up on finding relatives; and
just because they do not answer immediately does not mean that they do not
want to make contact with you as well.

This could be the town of Bolszowce Galicia, now known officially as

The coordinates are 49/11 latitude and 24/45 longitude.

Hope this will help.

The Countdown to DC (and the 23rd IAJGS Conference) begins... #general

JGSGWDC2003@...

Now that the Toronto conference is behind us--and the organizers did a
splendid job!!!--the 23rd annual conference planners are hard at work
getting ready for a grand event less than a year >from now. While our
website (www.JewishGen.org/DC2003) is still under construction, but
expanding, and registration for the conference will not be available
until February 1st, here's a taste of what to expect:

Hold July 20-25, 2003:
For the 23rd Annual International Conference on Jewish Genealogy in
Washington, D.C.

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Washington (JGSGW) warmly invites
genealogists of all levels and interests to attend next year's 23rd Annual
International Conference on Jewish Genealogy. It will be held in
Washington, D.C. --a “capital” city chock-filled with spectacular family
history resources and sightseeing attractions. The 2003 conference is sure
to be even more sophisticated than past annual seminars and build upon
their accomplishments. However, this is more than a chance to “turn the
corner” on your research efforts, reach new milestones, or learn of
advances and new databases. Conference attendees will be able to question
the experts and meet and mingle with those researching the same family
lines or ancestral towns. And, consider extending your stay in Washington
into a vacation for you and your family -- because so many attractions are
within walking distance of the Conference setting!

The Conference is being held July 20-25, 2003, at the ideally-located,
spacious, and elegant JW Marriott Hotel (www.marriotthotels.com/wasjw),
1331 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. The Hotel is conveniently located near major
genealogy research institutions, the Washington, D.C. Metro system, Union
Station/Amtrak, Ronald Reagan National Airport, two major theatres, and
numerous eateries ranging >from food court to gourmet tastes. The JW
Marriott has 738 guest rooms and 34 suites on 15 levels, and will offer
special, highly-attractive rates for Conference attendees. The Hotel’s
multitude of features includes an indoor swimming pool, a health club,
sports/recreation facilities, and three coffee shops and restaurants. The
Hotel is rated as Three Stars by the Mobil Travel Guide, and 4 Diamonds by
AAA. The area also is served by Baltimore-Washington International (BWI)
and Dulles Airports. The conference room rate is set at $149 for occupancy
up to four individuals.

The JGSGW already is planning the following features and events for
Conference registrants:
* A CD-ROM computer disk that contains the full Conference syllabus and a
newly-updated version of JGSGW's well-regarded resource tool, “Capital
Collections.” This resource manual describes where all Jewish-genealogy
relevant records and repositories are found in the Washington, D.C. area,
their hours, and what collections and databases these sites hold.
* A welcome address at the Opening Reception by the Archivist of the
United States, John W. Carlin.
* A special after-hours tour and reception at the U. S. Holocaust Memorial
Museum, and two tickets for admission to the Museum at any time during
the Conference week.
* Unique programs presented throughout the Conference by experts >from the
Library of Congress, National Archives, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum,
U. S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, and other major genealogy
research institutions.
* The chance to inspect and select >from the books, software, and supplies
of diverse genealogy publishers and vendors.
* Internet, database, and software access, as well as computer software
demonstrations and instruction.
* A Kosher Banquet featuring a major speaker in the field.
* Plus films, special exhibits, book and author discussions, and much more.

Remember too: the Metropolitan Washington/Maryland/Virginia area is filled
with many easily-reached cultural, social, and religious attractions. These
include the Smithsonian's many museums, the National and Warner Theatres
(both within one block of the Conference hotel), the Kennedy Center, unique
neighborhoods including Capitol Hill and Georgetown, numerous shops, and
many quality restaurants that offer a wide variety of cuisines. Washington
also provides an opportunity to tour the White House, the U. S. Capitol,
and many Federal monuments and memorials. In conjunction with the Jewish
Genealogy Society of Maryland, Conference attendees will be able to visit
Baltimore-area research and cultural institutions.

Renowned research repositories in a magnificent capital city! How can you
and your family pass up attending the 23rd Annual International Conference
next July? Look for further information in genealogy journals and on our
web site in the months ahead!

Has anyone ever heard of a sefer called Mazkeres P'K'SH? Cousins

Thank you for your time.

Re: GUGGENHEIM, Switz #germany

George Arnstein <vze2zx9t@...>

Anita Springer asked: Can anyone tell me how to do further genealogical
reseach in this part of Switzerland or on this branch of GUGGENHEIM?

I am doing this >from memory, but David Ludwig Kahn privately publ several
genealogies, including Guggenheim >from Endingen. I think well of it,
because it even shows my stepfather, whose mother was a G. Libr of
Congress has a copy ( catalog can be searched on line).

George A., Washington, DC
Alternate e-mail address is: garnstein@...

MODERATOR NOTE: The "alternate e-mail address" above is probably an
"e-mail for life" address. Many college and university alumni groups
offer such a service free of charge. Several commercial operations (such
as bigfoot.com and POBox.com) do also.

When you have such an email forwarding service, you can arrange for
mail sent to that address to be instantly forwarded to your present
address. If you change email providers you change the forwarded to
address with your service and your mail will be routed accordingly.

This is particularly useful for your JGFF and other long-term listings.
Having an "e-mail for life" address will insure that those listings will
not go out-of-date. MOD1

Re: GUGGENHEIM [+ ER] #germany

MBernet@...

I'm sorry; I goofed. There are GUGGENHEIMs and GUGGENHEIMERs and an almost
infinite number of spelling variants. The polymath professor who
published a dictionary of Jewish names was a GGH-er.

The proper listing for the book (cut and pasted >from amazon.com) is
Jewish Family Names and Their Origins: An Etymological Dictionary by
Heinrich W. Guggenheimer, Eva H. Guggenheimer. List Price: $156.25

I don't know whether the +ERs and the -ERs are related, nor how the Swiss
and the German families are related.

I did send on an inquiry to a friend who has a Swiss GUGGENHEIM
brother-in-law (or is that GUGGENHEIMER?).
