Help with Hebrew #general

Jackye Sullins <jsullins@...>

Thank you to everyone who helped me decipher the Hebrew on my great great
aunt's stone. I goofed and forgot to mention a "resh" which made the date
17 Kislev 5676 or 24 November 1915.

Sam PREISS - Denver Colorado #general

Steve Eisenstein

How many times do we say "get the info while you can"??? Well, I left
things go and now my Mother is not here to ask.

I remember visiting Colorado in 1967 and meeting my mother's uncle, Sam
Preiss. He was living with a daughter and son-in-law at the time and was
in his 80's. I have searched my mother's very complete phone books and
can not find the name of the family.

Does anyone out there have any info on Sam Preiss? I believe that he
died in the early 1970's but could not find him in the SSDI.

Is there any index of the obituairies for the Denver area?

Thanks for any help you might provide.

Jewish Birth Records for Tarnamera #hungary

Can anyone tell me where I can find Jewish birth records for Tarnamera?
The FHC doesn't appear to have any.

Thanks.

UNGAR: Gyongyos, Budapest
ERNST/ECSEDI: Tarnamera, Budapest
FISCHER: Arad
WEINER: Budapest
GROEDEL: Budapest, Sighet
LONYAY: Budapest

Moderator: If the FHL catalog does not list Jewish records for Tarnamera, Heves megye, that is because these records are not in the Hungarian National Archives or were not presented to the FHL when they last worked at this site. According to Daniel Schlyter of the FHL, some records that were not previously available for filming have been included among those more recently filmed. I do not know when these records will be available. You may want to contact the Archives directly to see if they have the records you want. You can write to the Hungarian National Archives at the following address: Magyar Orszagos Leveltar, 1014 Budapest I, Becskapu Ter 4, 1250 Budapest, Hungary. According to info posted on this site in the past, you can write in English to the attention of Laszlo Kalniczky, Head of the Copying Department. If anyone has more recent info an update would be appreciated.

Help With Hebrew #general

Jackye Sullins <jsullins@...>

I have a picture of a stone and can't make out one name and the date. The
stone reads for father's name: Rev. Gershon and then nun, pay, tet, resh,
hay.

The date seems to be 17 Kislev and then shin, nun, tav, space, tav, space,
ayin, vav.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Where would I find naturalization and citizenship #general

Ron Goldman

<<The documents you want to see are the "Declaration of Intent" and the
"Petition for Naturalization". These could have been filed at either a
county court or the US District Court (where filed should be on the
certificate). If filed at a county court, then you will have to contact
that court to see where their archives are located. If filed at a US
District Court, then you should be able to get a copy via NARA.>>

Yes, the Dec of Int and the COA 'are' the important documents to obtain
but are these available for all the early years way before the
standardization of the naturalization process?

I have a certificate >from 1872, 2 >from 1884, and 2 more >from 1903-1906 and
the only numbers on the copies are the volume and page # for the final
naturalization papers. Nowhere is there an indication that the original
petition was filed at the same court, nor any referrence to petition # or
dates. Are these still obtainable for those years?

Ron Goldman, FL.

Re: Obituary in Sao Paulo, Brazil #general

Marcia Woolf Bulach <mwbulach@...>

There are several newspapers online.
For example www.estado.com.br;
www.folha.com.br;www.jt.com.br; www.agestado.com.br
www.jb.com.br (this is published in Rio); www.oglobo.com.br (also national
newspaper but published in Rio);
You can also contact the Chevra Kadisha

Can someone in Sao Paulo tell me if the newspapers there carry
written obits, and if they are available online. I need the obit of
someone who died last Tuesday, Aug 13th. If it is possible to find it
online, I will need a translation, but that's another problem.

The 1915 Graflichen Taschenbuch lists the genealogy of the Counts
Zamoyski starting with Stanislaus (1775-1856). It is a few pages long
andin difficult old German type. I could not find the town Stawiski
mentioned but there are a lot of blanks.
