There is an additional book that is basically about the Riga Getto titled
HOW DARK THE HEAVENS: 1400 DAYS IN THE GRIP OF NAZI TERROR. It was
written by Sidney Iwens (Ivans), who now lives in Florida, and was
published by Shengold
Publishers, Inc, New York. It lists for $18.95 in Hard cover but is
available on line at a discounted price (I purchased it at Borders.com).
It may also be available in some libraries, I haven't checked.

Re: Help With Hebrew #general

Zalman <zalman@...>

Nun,pay,tet,resh,hay - niftera(for female) or "passed away".
Second word - Shnat=Shana(year).
"tav,ayin,vav" - I think a letter is missing here.

Zalman Lazkovich

I have a picture of a stone and can't make out one name and the date.
The stone reads for father's name: Rev. Gershon and then nun, pay,
tet, resh, hay.

The date seems to be 17 Kislev and then shin, nun, tav, space, tav,
space, ayin, vav.

There is another website that related to Stawiski and Zamoyski.
This website is in English and it cover all Kolno area.

Zamoyski was one of the oldest and mightiest Polish princely families.
There are going much further back than 1915 Taschenbuch is indicating.

Hope this help.

The 1915 Graflichen Taschenbuch lists the genealogy of the Counts
Zamoyski starting with Stanislaus (1775-1856). It is a few pages long
andin difficult old German type. I could not find the town Stawiski
mentioned but there are a lot of blanks.

I was pleasantly surprised to receive a response to my posting about
the availability of Ukrainian archival information >from Miriam
Weiner, in which she noted some clarifications to my info re: her
website. With her permission, here is the pertinent information:

= The archive database is located at her website

hers, but relates to her research/tour services.
= Excerpts >from the book, not reproduction of the 'entire' book, are
included on the rtrfoundation.org website.

Dear Jackye,

You state, "Rev. Gershon and then nun, pay, tet, resh, hay."

"Rev." is probably "Reb." and nun, fay, tet resh, hay spells the word
nifterah which means "died".

As far as the date is concerned, and for translation of all information
in Hebrew on a stone I highly recommend the Jewishgen Infofile which can
be accessed at the following link:

Ukraine SIG #Ukraine Yiddish letter on Viewmate #ukraine

John Epstein <johnebos@...>

Hello all,

I need help translating what I believe to be a letter written in Yiddish for
when my g-grandfather died. Came across it about two months ago and have
been unable to translate it.

Included in the letter is a photograph of my grandfather sitting on his
father's lap as well as my grandfather's brother sitting on the wall. I am
also told that the two men standing in the background are Ben-Gurion and
Ben-Zvi though I do not know which is which.

The quality of the photo is not all that great and the letter is almost a
page long. I do not know if I am asking too much, but I do not know where
else to turn to.

The letter can be found at:

Please respond to me directly at:

GUGGENHEIM from Switzerland #germany

Anita Springer <aspringer@...>

My husband's great-grandfather Josef GUGGENHEIM was born in 1848, possibly
in Oberendingen, Switzerland. Can anyone tell me how to do further
genealogical reseach in this part of Switzerland or on this branch of
GUGGENHEIM? His parents were Heinrich GUGGENHEIM and Marie WWILER/WHYLER.
He had a sister named Sophia, born 1839. The family apparently moved
across the border to Tiengen, Germany. I have read the book "Die
Tiengener Juden" but the families mentioned are in the 1900s and too late
to help me. Thanks for any ideas.

SCHECK, Rose 1884 - 1976; SCHECK, Bennit 1915 - 2002 - "Russia" / AZ and NY, USA #general

Dream Builder <dreambuilder@...>

I found the following information in the Social Security Death Index:

SCHECK, Rose
b. 01 MAR 1884
d. MAY 1976
SSN issued in NY
Last Known Residence: Brooklyn, Kings County, NY 11214 USA

SCHECK, Bennit
b. 13 APR 1915
d. 03 APR 2002 verified
SSN issued in NY
Last Known Residence: Mesa, Maricopa County, AZ 85206 USA

This may be the family I am looking for. I have a photograph of a man in a
uniform (police or security guard?). It was cut >from a larger photograph and
the reverse reads:

"Bennit Scheck
XXXX President Ave
Brooklyn, NY
near Nostrand Ave
Tel. HYCNT(A or H) 3-XXXX
Nephew of 82
Hirsch Friedman
91
Sister Rose Schech"

If my grandfather Hirsch FRIEDMAN wrote the ages on the photograph between
01 MAR 1974 and 05 OCT 1974, Rose would have been 91 and he 82. Since the
SSDI lists her death in 1976, she would have been 92 when she died. Another
photograph I have says that Rose's husband was Isidore SCHECH (SCHECK?) and
that he died in 1945.

Also, since Bennit SCHECK's death was verified, there must be descendants,
possibly in Mesa, AZ. If there are, I would very much like to be in contact
with them.

If anyone recognizes any of this information, please email me.

BLOCK family #general

Raymond Whitzman <whitz@...>

Dear genners;

A relative of mine was researching the Block family in the
1920's . One chart mentions my great great great grandfather Abraham Block
had a daughter Kuna Cohen . I have been able to trace this family. A son was
a Shamus in Dorbyan Lithuania named Ephraim who had a son Chaim Essaau .
Then there was a daughter who married Hirsa Schmuel Joseph. I am assuming
Joseph is the family name , The notation says he lived in Pennsylvania .

Also on the chart it mentions that Kuna had a first cousin Mrs. ESTERMAN .
The ESTERMANS live in the Paterson NJ area. If any of this information is
familiar I would appreciate any help .
