Finding someone in the census in NYC by address #general

Moishe Miller

Hello,
The JGS of Brooklyn has tutorials on locating someone in the 1920 and in
the 1930 NY censuses, by address. Perhaps that can help you.

See: http://www.jgsob.org/methodology.html

I need some help finding a possible relative in the US census. The problem is
two-fold: I only have the last name (which is an extremely common one -Rosenthal)
and they lived in Manhattan. I know the exact address in Manhattan and I know they
lived there at least in 1906, but when I do a search in the census, I can't search
by "Manhattan" - only by "New York," which gives several thousand results.

enumeration districts for NYC #general

Alyssa Freeman

Dear All,
Thank you for your efforts of help but I think I should clarify
some things for those of you who have recommended using SteveMorse or
those who plan to in the future: I tried that. I narrowed it down to
two ED's (one of the cross streets apparently didn't exist back then)
but having that information doesn't make searching the federal
censuses any easier. You can not search the federal census in NY by
city (at least not in 1900 or 1910) and there were thousands of people
named Rosenthal living in NY back then. Plus, when you see the census
results, only the word or election district is displayed, not the
enumeration district (this is on Family Search and My Heritage). You
have to click individual census records to see the enumeration
district. I thought I could narrow down the ward that way, but it
turns out more than one ward can have the same number of enumeration
districts. So if the ED is 382, it could be in any number of Manhattan
wards. I spent hours yesterday searching using that information before
discovering that multiple wards had the same number of ED's. The 1905
NY census is only visible on Ancestry and I'm not a paid member of
Ancestry, so I can't access it. That's when I emailed JewishGen.

Origins of Khvat Surname #general

Adam Cherson

Dear JG Researchers,

I am investigating a branch of cousins who went by the surname of Khvat (aka Chwat,
Kwatt, etc.)There are several matzevot dating >from about 1850 to 1929 in the
Okopowa Cemetery in Warsaw showing this as the family surname. My question is about
the origins of this surname.

Could this be an acronym surname or one based on a geographical origin or what?
Please bear in mind that this is a family of Cohanim so there could be a
rabbinical origin to the name as well.

Thank in advance for any insights.

Yes, through Stephen Morse's wonderful tools: use the "Unified Census
ED Finder" (https://stevemorse.org/census/unified.html ) by entering the
city, state and address; narrow down to the exact block by choosing
cross streets off a map (links to Google & Yahoo maps provided). The
tool will then give you the ED for the selected census year.

If you click on the link for the ED, the tool will provide you with more
info, such as the roll and start frame number. Also provided are links
to sites where you may view the images online.
