My results have been disappointing in terms of finding new relatives to
connect to my family tree. Some people have had much better results. I
would say that one gets the biggest bang for the buck in DNA testing by
having more known relatives tested and by doing conventional research
before DNA research....

Hello Genners,

"Raise the Roof" is on Public Television. Not just in Miami.

Miami's public channels (PBS and LRN) have been showing on different
weeks the documentary "Raise the Roof". The film follows a ten-year
project to rebuild an iconic wooden synagogue in Poland. The result
stands as the centerpiece in the POLIN museum

Check your local public channels for the next showing.

See you in Warsaw.

Hi,

There were two separate towns by the same name Friedland, located within Posen
administration vicinity:

1. Markisch Friedland, known now as Miroslawiec in Poland. This place had 330
Jewish population in year 1880, and 70 in 1933. Town Miroslawiec is listed in
JGFF towns database and there 20 researchers entries for this place.

2. Prusisch Friedland (Old Polish: Frydland Pruski) known currently as Debrzno,
Poland. Town had 287 Jewish souls in 1880 and 1198 in 1933.

OPPENHEIMER family, Ventura, CA #general

Werner Hirsch

In trying to put together my family tree I have run into an apparent dead end.
A second cousin (once removed) of mine, Else OPPENHEIMER, left Germany in 1940
and eventually settled in Ventura, CA with her husband, Ernest.

I am trying to find out if they had any children, or other family and, if so,
where they might be. I would also like to know what Ernest's work was in Ventura.

Here is what I know abut them:

Else Fanny GAERTNER, b. 4 Jan.1900, Frankfurt a/M, Germany, immigrated to USA
from Liverpool 22 Mar. 1940 (Arrived New York City 1 Apr. 1940), d. 22 June 1982,
Ventura, CA

Ernst (Ernest) OPPENHEIMER, b. 23 Mar. 1890, Marsberg, Germany, d. 17 Sept. 1978,
Ventura, CA (Son of Siegmund OPPENHEIMER)

Both are buried in the Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura. The Find-A-Grave and
JewishGen's websites both have a photo of Ernest's gravestone, but unfortunately,
not of Else's.

Thanks for any help that someone can give me, or pont me in the right direction.

Rabbi Yisroel Dovid of Nowy Targ #rabbinic

Hello RavSigers,

According to the Nowy Targ Yiskor book was Rabbi Yisroel Dovid in Nowy Targ
a remarkable man and one of the greatest Talmud scholars of his day.

A note I found in an envelope among my late motherĀ“s belongings says that he
passed away 1925 at the age of about 90 years

Does anybody have any information about his surname, relatives or family
tree?

Best regards

Hello Galicia

I recently joined the group and have received information >from GerSIG.

My ancestors came >from the Galicia area prior to moving to Germany.

My grandmother Chancia REICHWALD nee ROSENRAUCH was born in
Kolomyya (Slobodka Lesna) on 2nd February 1896 and died in London in
1971. I have located her grave.

Her husband, Nathan REICHWALD is said to have been born in Tarnow in
1890. I am having difficulty locating records of Nathan's birth although I
have located his grave in London (died 1988).

I am also having difficulty locating the birth or marriage records of my
great grandmother Chawa (Chawe or Eve or Eva) REICHWALD nee
(HIRSCH). I know that Chawa's husband, Jakob REICHWALD, was born
in Rzeszow in 1864.

I apologise if my format is incorrect.

My JGFF Researcher ID number is 642054.

The family names and ancestral towns that I have entered in the JGFF

Index to 1897 Russian Census Head of Households in Kyiv Guberniya Online #general

Gary Mokotoff

Professional genealogist Sarah Nadia Lipes has placed online an index to
heads of households in Kyiv guberniya found in the 1897 Russian Census. It
is located at http://jewua.info/jewish-genealogy-search-at-ukraine/ .
Information provided is surname; given name; patronymic; age; and fond,
document and page numbers. There are approximately 50,000 entries. The
search engine uses a "Starts with" algorithm. Searching for "Kagan" also
produces results for "Kaganovich."

Lipes stated that the project is a work-in-progress, and she expects "to add
many thousands of additional names in coming weeks and months." She
recommends researchers read the instructions page at
http://jewua.info/how-to-make-a-search/ before attempting a search. That
page has, for example, the transliteration scheme used to go >from the
Cyrillic to the Latin alphabet.

The project was funded by a grant provided by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., host
of the American genealogy show Finding Your Roots. Gates had a person of
Ukrainian ancestry on his show and provided documents to demonstrate the
person's ancestry. Lipes informed Gates that the research was faulty and
provided him with the correct documents. Gates was so impressed by Lipes
work, that he donated his honorarium for speaking at the recent IAJGS
Orlando conference to make it possible to place the Kyiv census records
online.
