On 01-08-02 Marcia Rosenblatt Weisbrod asked about "Choppe," "Rogoshav" and
also a shtetl or town spoken of by relatives as "Dorf." Perhaps "Dorf," was a corruption of the name "Dovsk" which is east of "Rogatchov" (Rogachev) and south of Mogilev. I'm stumped about "Choppe" although Ms. Weisbrod says she has located it. But then I've not made a attempt to find it. For Rogachev at least Ms. Weisbrod should do a search in Jewishgen's Discussion Group Archives and Family Finder, and even a search using the the "Search This Website" utility at Jewishgen's main page. What she finds may give her hints about the other villages about which she is curious. It may be that her relatives migrated >from Choppe, Rogachev and Dorf (or Dovsk) to the Korets area which is nearer Kiev, possibly because they hoped to find there some means of bettering their lives. Frida Rabinovici - Australia 1920's
#general
Monica and Ariel Talmor <mtalmor@...>
I have posted this problem here several years ago with no resulting leads,
and I'm trying again now in the hope that the larger membership might help. My father's cousin, Frida Rabinovici, left Romania and went to Australia to work for the Jewish Colonization Association in the 1920's, possibly via Paris. She was not heard of again, at least not by the family members my father was in contact with. I am trying to find her family, a task even more difficult because I don't have her married name, if she was ever married, and I don't know where in Australia she lived. I suppose it's possible she never even reached Australia, but I'm just assuming that she did. I have finally reached the JCA archives in Jerusalem, and was told that they have nothing on Australian activities. I have looked at all the Frida Rabinovici's in the FTJP, with all the possible spellings, and have contacted possible matches. The only possible match, by name and approximate birth date, is such a distant relative of the person submitting the data that he knows nothing more about her other than her name. Here are some general questions for anyone who might know: to what part of Australia was the JCA sending workers in the 1920's? If I had an idea I might try to contact cemeteries or synagogues. How can I search for any trace of a woman if I only have her maiden name (as well as her parents' and one sibling, all of whom remained in Romania). Was there an accident with an Australian bound ship which might explain why she was not heard >from again? Can civil records be searched in Australia for the whole country? I saw on line that the Australian Jewish Historical Society has a microfilm of many such records, but where would I start: a marriage record, a naturalization record, a death record? What would have most chances for a find with only a maiden name? Frida's parents were Samuel and Rashela (Rachel) Rabinovici, and she had a sister Zuzi (nickname for Suzana, Shoshana, or any name starting with S or Z) and one more unknown sibling. Do Jewish gravestones in Australia include the father's name, like most of them would in Europe or in the US? I'm thinking of looking at the Cemetery Project CD for Frida bat Shmuel, is that a good idea? This is a real needle in a haystack, but miracles have happened on JewishGen, so I'm hoping for one here. I have just used the "Google" search engine to find Mr. Schwartz's
"Bacsava." It seems that there is such a town. It is in Hungary and it is not as I had suggested earlier, Bekascaba. Bacsava is in the Szekhely district. See: http://www.bogardi.com/gen/g162.shtml About the possibility of finding genealogical records in Hungary by writing or by making telephone calls, I am ignorant. So Mr. Schwartz should search at Jewishgen for Hungarian researchers who may be able to help him. If Jewishgenners with Hungarian ancestry can't help then he should poke around the Internet for a Hungarian Genealogical Society to which he could write. He lived in Pultusk until the war started and went back there last year. Why should the family be listed in the wrong necrology? Paul Silverstone >> Paul I will attempt to address your questions to the best of my ability. When I first undertook the Necrology translation project, I expected there to be some changes that would be requested after the project was completed, due to a number of factors. I always had in mind to make any credible changes requested by parties whose relatives were or were not listed in the Necrology. I will request a Yiddish reading member of our group, who possess a copy of the Yizkor Book, to verify that Szyfra BORENSTEIN & children are/or are not listed in the Necrology. The name Bernstein if listed, would appear on page 637 of the Yizkor Book. If any member of the Pultusk group that could check the Yizkor Book for that entry , I would greatly appreciate it. Why Szyfra BORENSTEIN is listed in the Makow Mazowiecki Necrology, I wouldn't know, perhaps she lived in Makow Makow Mazowieck previous to her marriage, and someone requested that she be remembered in their Necrology. In any case, I will do whatever is necessary to correct any errors in our Necrology. In addition, I have no problem with adding to the Necrology, a requested family name, if it fits the criteria of the of the Pultusk Association, who published the book, meaning those souls murdered before or during the war. There is a much larger Necrology in the Yizkor Book devoted to Pultusk residents who passed away >from causes other than those inflicted by the Germans or their Allies. Has Gershon Bernstein verified that Szyfra was indeed a resident of Pultusk? Paul, on a side note, I have met Annette Weber last year, who lives in New Jersey. Annette is a Bernstein descendant, whose family was >from Pultusk. I believe she told me that her family owned a mill there. Do you know her? I met her through an amazing coincidence, a member of her family works at a company in New York with a member of the Niestempower family, whom were also >from Pultusk. My grandfather Issik Niestempower (born in Pultusk and immigrated in 1906), took the name Bernstein in the U.S., due to the fact that his cousins >from Pultusk, who immigrated earlier, were named Bernstein (or some derivative name), and he felt it would be easier to assimilate with the name Bernstein. By the way, many of these cousins shortened their name to Berns. With all this information between us, there must be a connection that we can jointly unravel. I would like to speak to you by phone, if you are in agreement, please send me your number and a good time to reach you. Stewart Bernstein MODERATOR NOTE: Please reply privately. |
