Dear all.

My father's maternal grandfather beared the rare surname :
RABINOWITCH :-)), he was >from Zhetl.
Joseph Mendel RABINOWITCH (born 1866- died ? in London), son of Wolf &
Jessie RABINOWITCH.
Are there any files / lists etc. Where I can find more information about the
characters and / or the area in the 19th century ?

Best regards.

Udi Cain

Dear all.

My paternal G'G'grandmother, Chaia Esther HALEVI (Zadikov / HALB"Z),
was perhaps born in Mogilev around 1840.
Her father was Zadok HALEVI. Her mother was >from the JOFFE family.

They may had a son, Yisrael HALEVI, who lived in Bobruysk.

Is there a way to enlarge my knowledge with regard to that family?

Best regards.

Kobrin and Slonim #belarus

Udi Cain

Dear all.

I just found out, that my father's paternal grandmother's brother, Isaac
SALASNIK (born 1856), dealt with Iron in Kobrin, in the end of 19th century.
The surname is written:
ZHELYAZNIK.
I saw a note, saying that her brother Menachem Yankel (1858 - 1890) was born
in Slonim. But since Slonim is near Kobrin, could it be that Kobrin belonged
some how, by definition, to Slonim ? And than they may had been born in
Kobrin, Slonim ?
If my G'grandmother was born in Kobrin, and I need access to information
about archives etc, to confirm that, than maybe her mother's family,
TROTSKY, were >from that town ?
The same goes with vice versa situation, Slonim, as their birth town.

Best regards.

Looking for my own ancestors #belarus

Laura M Gottlieb <lauragottlieb@...>

16 January 2002

I am also looking for ancestors >from Belarus. These would be my
great-grandparents Anna/Feiga and Lewis (or Louis) Moss with their sons
Solomon and Abraham and daughter Masha, originally >from "Malastofki in
the province of Molov." (There may have been other children, but I don't
know who they are.) These five people emigrated to Liverpool, England
sometime before 1907, where the three men were boot-makers. I believe
that what Abraham identified as "Masatofki" on his 1914 British
naturalization papers as his place of origin had the alternate names of
"Molostovka" and/or "Krasnapole" or "Krasnapoli" or even other spelling
variants. There seem to be a variety of "Krasnapoles" in different
Belarus locations, which I find confusing. I have no other information
about this community or these people when they lived in Belarus. (Their
name was "Moss" by the time they got to England, but it may have been
"Moskovitch" or some other similar name in Belarus.) If anyone on this
discussion list can help me with information about the town or the
people, I would be very grateful.
Please write to me privately at the email address below. Thank you!

The Levanda Index #belarus

Michael Steinore

I've put together a new web site on Czarist Laws
concerning Jews. Currently based on material from
three 19th century resources, it has the text of
some Czarist laws and summarizations of others,
a little commentary and analysis. It's very much a work
in progress, but there is already a substantial amount
of material available. There is a lengthy introduction at the site, so I
won't repeat it here. If you find anything interesting or useful, I'd like
to hear >from you.

We are pleased to announce that we have added an English version of the

the major Jewish institutions, to the Radzyn Podlaski Yizkor Book site.

The map appeared in Hebrew on the inside back cover of the Yizkor Book. To
view the map open http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/radzyn/radzyn.html and at
the end of the Table of Contents click on the Map link.

We wish to thank Lance Ackerfeld and the rest of the Yizkor Book team for

As you suggest, it is a risky business to install software about the source of
which one knows nothing. Beyond that, one would have to ask why the owner of the
Website needs you to use specific software, which is also written for a specific
operating system, undoubtedly Windows, maybe Mac too.

There is no reason for a Web designer to construct a genealogy site in such a
way that it requires specific access software. There is, however, a business
reason.

Once you have registered, your name and email address is in the hands of the
site owner. Dollars to doughnuts, he expects to use the list he will have thus
generated either to spam registrants directly, or will sell his list to mass
spammers, or (worse yet) to suppliers of mailing lists to mass spammers. Note
that his list will be a high-quality one, since they are guaranteed to contain
onlyvalid addresses (supplied by living registrants who are holders of valid
email accounts).

My advice: Avoid his site LIKE THE PLAGUE IT IS.

I was wondering if anyone else out there received an unsolicited e-mail
the other day >from a web site: http://www.gedlink.com

The reason I ask is that the e-mail sounded interesting, even suggesting
tons of records, some specifically for the surnames I'm researching.
However, when I went to the website, I realized I can't search the databases
unless I register. And, I can't register until I've first installed their
software on my system. There didn't seem to be too much other information on
the website. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I don't know if I'm asking for a virus
if I install some software before knowing about it. Has anyone out there
ever come across a geneaology board that requires installing software?

I'd be curious for your thoughts. Thanks,

Micah Males
