Re: "Obadiah?" -> Edward

During the past twenty four hours,I have been poring over JRI-PL's new
listing of records for the town or village of Shcherets, in the hope of finding records for my paternal grandparents, Ester SCHUTZ FELDMAN and her husband Nahum FELDMAN ( who, as I discovered, was listed in the records as Nachman FELDMANN) and their four children. I didn't find Ester's birth records because she was born before the date of the earliest extant birth records for Shcherets. I didn't find Ester's marriage record in Shcherets (or in any nearby town) nor did I find the birth record of their oldest child, a son whose given name was entered on his ship identity card as Manes. (At the JRI-PL I found a Mendel born to an Ester SCHUTZ but this Mendel's father was a SOLOMON. I doubt that this Mendel was my oldest Uncle Manus who was called in the US simply "Max." Max resembled my father too greatly to have been conceived by another father.) But maybe I have misread the listings. But I did find the birth records of my father, "Chaim Eisig" his sister "Jenty Sara" and the younger of his two brothers, who had been listed in his ship identity card as "Yossl." I was puzzled over the birth entry for my uncle Joseph. His given names were entered as "Owadja Josef." I realized at once that Owadja must be a form of Obadiah, or Ovadia, but I wondered to what name he or his parents may have "americanized" it. As part of a short thread on the name "Obadiah," Joseph Ash, in his Jewishgen message of April 8, 2001, wrote that "Edward would be a possible replacement." Finding this message in the Discussion Group Archives helped me answer why my uncle Joseph's WWI army records showed him as "Joseph E.." I had thought the "E." might stand for "Edward" especially because my late older brother. who changed his given names (Joseph Mordechai) and surname, first to Joseph Edward FELDMAN, then to Joseph E. FULTON and finally to Geoffrey Edmont FULTON. Now I know that the Edward of my uncle Joseph's name was the anglicization of Obadiah. Naomi Fatouros (nee FELDMAN) Bloomington, Indiana NFatouros@... On 8-26-99, I posted a message to Jewishgen, saying that according to my
paternal grandfather's ship manifest, he said he was going to a "cousin" N. Rettig at 124 Attorney Street. Yesterday while searching through the JRI-PL's listings for the town or village of Shcherets, I discovered many RETTIGS who were born, married and died in Shcherets and in nearby towns. I went to the EIDB to see whether I could find any RETTIGS that might have come >from Shcherets and found a Napthali RETTIG, who arrived in the US on the Maasdam, a year or so before my grandfather taken the Werkendam >from Rotterdam But I couldn't find a Napthali RETTIG in the JRI-PL database. Now I wonder whose cousin that N.RETTIG on my grandfather's manifest was. my grandfather's who was born in Pinsk, or my grandmother's who lived in Shcherets? (Question is rhetorical only!) I turned to it right away and found some long elusive info. about my family's ancestors. I am sending for their records too. This is why I support JewishGen financially - I have gotten more than my money's worth already. I am so appreciative of all this great work. Thanks!!! Where is Bobrce?

Beverly <bbevy@...>
A friend of mine has been assured that the town "Bobrce" pictured in an
old postcard is the same as the "Bobrka" both she and I are interested in. Although I am convinced that they are not one and the same town, I cannot find "Bobrce" on any current map, nor is there anyone searching that town on JewishGen or Gesher Galicia. I have found one reference in English to the town on the internet by a Polish genealogist who somewhat unclearly places the town near Krosno and Zmigrod in Western Galicia. He quotes >from a translation of the Polish "Slownik Geograficzny" published between 1880 and 1902. If anyone has an old Gazeteer or detailed atlas, would you be so kind as to look up "Bobrce", see if a town existed with that spelling, and help us clear up this mystery? Successful search in Azerbaijan Archive
#general
IlyaZeldes <ilyaz@...>
Recently, I was lucky enough to do search in the Archive of Azerbaijan in
Baku. The search was unexpectedly successful! Not only did I receive dozens of documents >from their files (over hundred of pages!), but it allowed a search of a local Jewish cemetery and quite a few burials were found, some of which I had no idea about before! Moreover, several photographs of the burials were provided, too! The search in archive found a file with documents about my grandfather's will, description of his property, family lists, school records for my uncle, etc. Photographs of tombstones provided many dates, Jewish names and so on. I never thought that a search in such a place could be so successful. Dear fellow Litvaks,
Has any of your heard of "Faya" as a nickname for Faivish (in a late 18th century or later Polish record)? In Polish they were spelled Faja and Faywisz, respectively. Thanks in advance for any response, Norman Carp-Gordon |

It may be interesting to you that Ted Lewis has a museum in Circleville,Ohio
where he lived as well as a park named after him. I lived in the area for several years and was only one of a handful of Jews living there. Most of the residents there did not know his real name or that he was Jewish. Cicleville is a average small town about 30miles south of Columbus. To tell you the make up of the city it has 60 protestant churches, 1 catholic church and no other religious institutions. Thought you might enjoy that info. Alice Levitin majjongmav@... The Rav from Romen

Dolph Klein <kledolph@...>
My wife's gggfather, Rabbi Ya'akov Berish, was known as the Rav
from Ramin (sic) according to a document. We believe that Raminmight be Romen, the alternative name for Romny, Ukraine, but we may be mistaken. Ya'akov had a brother David. Around 1837, Ya'akov, his pregnant wife and two sons, Chaim and Yisroel, sailed to Palestine. While enroute, the rebbetzin gave birth to a son, Ze'ev. The family settled in Tzvat. Ze'ev grew up to have children of his own, Sarah and Chana. At age 25, Ze'ev died in a drowning accident in Tzvat. I would appreciate receiving information about the Rav >from Ramin (or Romen) or suggestions on where to search for such information. Dolph Klein Chapel Hill, NC |
