Korn who provided additional information. Hopefully with the permission of Aryeh Lopiansky, this Brooklyn boy will continue on this thread a little longer. A chronological question seems to present itself based on your explanation. If Rabbi Yitzchak Meir ROTHENBERG, known as the Alter of Gora (1799 - 1867) was also called the Alexander Rebbe, how and when did Rabbi Shraga Feivel DANZIGER, who passed away in 1848, become the Alexander Rebbe? He lived during Rabbi Yitzchak Meir's lifetime. Was he the first and did Rabbi Yitzchak Meir receive the title after the passing of Rabbi Shraga Feivel DANZIGER? Did Rabbi Shraga Feivel DANZIGER have any offspring that also assumed that title? I know that there are several Alexander Rebbes today. Please clarify if you are able. Have a Happy Chanukah! Is there any record of cantors similar to rabbis? I would really like to know if this was a family profession, as we are all good singers and religious. Our genealogy stops there at the moment and I would like to find a way to go further back. Any info appreciated Marilyn Kalman Montreal and Vancouver Canada

Lithuania SIG #Lithuania New Editor for Svencionys Yizkor Book
#lithuania
Marjorie Rosenfeld <marjorierosenfeld@...>
I'm happy to announce that we have a new editor for the Svencionys yizkor
book (Sefer zikaron le-esrim ve-shalosh kehilot she-nehrevu be-ezor Svintsian), some of which is presently online at: http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Svencionys/svencionys.html. Nancy Collier Holden, who had Kovarsky relatives in Lintup, will be taking over the editing job after January 5, 2002. A former Special Education teacher, Nancy has an advanced degree in Supervision and Administration, has done graduate work in Clinical Psychology and Human Development, and has extensive administrative experience. Since her retirement, Nancy has lectured on Jewish genealogy and served as a volunteer at the National Archives Regional Branch in Laguna Niguel, California. She is also a past president of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Orange County and a past editor of the Society's newsletter. In addition to all the above, Nancy has recently launched an excellent ShtetLinks site on Myadel (http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Myadel/myweb2/). I know Nancy will do a fine job as the next editor of the Svencionys yizkor book and hope that those with ties to Svencionys or one of the other 22 communities included in this book will help her in any and every way possible. Marjorie Rosenfeld, Carlsbad CA (Retiring Editor, Svencionys yizkor book)

Sorry to be stating the obvious, and also realize that this won't be very
helpful to those who are dealing with existing photos, but ... It seems to me that the biggest effect would come at the very beginning -- i.e. in the original photo and especially the lighting when the photo is taken. I don't know much about photography, but I would think if you can get a good bright strobe which is separate >from the camera, and try different angles, particularly close to the plane of the surface with low sunlight conditions, maybe even at night, you should be able to get a much clearer photo. Perhaps you might be able to do it occasionally with sunlight, e.g. by photographing at midsummer noon at the equator. Seriously, this might work occasionally if the gravestones are parallel by choosing just the right time of day. Another old-fashioned idea is to make rubbings. I think it's important to mention these things, since the old graves are deteriorating. Pollution is a significant factor, and our president is gutting environmental controls in the name of antiterrorism. Maybe even some graves which have already been photographed should be re-photographed (yes, I know there are a lot which have never been photographed even once). Maybe we need to enlist some innovative types of volunteers. e.g. schoolchildren could learn a lot about local history as well as doing original research by photographing gravestones. I think Britain is ahead of us in things like this, at least as to surveys of natural flora and fauna. I think that human history is also valuable to preserve for posterity. Haakon Chevalier
