Under the French regulation there are no probleme for the buried
certificat.
The cimetary are public !

Is there an archive of documentation for small businesses, now
defunct, in the US, >from about 1900 - 1940? I would like to trace
the histories of the small companies that were run by my great
uncles and great grandfather in Pittsburgh, Savannah GA and in
Brooklyn NY.

I am wondering if anyone has any experience or pointers of enhancing
digital photos of tombstones? I have Adobe PhotoShop 5.5 and with a hit
or miss approach I have been able to enhance photos of some very faded
stones to read the data. I am convinced that if I really knew the program
I could make the stones even more readable. Hence I am trying to teach
myself Photoshop.

If any users have any points or good experience I would love to correspond
with you directly to learn the tricks of the trade.

By the by the Kurland Cemetery Project in the New York area now has photos
of over 2,000 stones. We are working on sorting them out as we speak.

Looking for a volunteer >from Manchester, N.H that will be willing to look
up a grave stone in the Jewish cemetery and perhaps transcribe/or
photograph the stone.

I have just recieved information of a brother of my grandfather Hyman
ARONSON, Samuel, that moved to Manchester N.H..in the late 1920's. He died
in 1938 and is buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Manchester.

Michelson was >from Cleveland and I can find no record of him working
with Einstein. He won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1907 and there is a
huge amount of information available about him on the Internet.

Case Western Redserve University, here, has a huge sculpture dedicated
to his discovery of the speed of light.

I agree with Nancy Ring-Kendrick that mother's maiden name being used
for -significant-security purposes is a thing of the past. Companies are
well aware that it is not a secure piece of information. The only time they
may use mother's maiden name it is to discuss non-secure matters. For
example, if I call my credit card company to question an item on the bill,
they may accept mother's maiden name as proof of identity.

In relation to Hanna's request for assistance in Nice, France, you refer to
Ernest Kallmann's article for the Cercle de Généalogie Juive. This is
indeed an excellent description of the regulation for obtaining French
records. It also completes and partly corrects your information. Indeed,
death records less than 100 years old are accessible without restriction.
As for birth and marriage certificates, the ones that are delivered only
to direct descendants are the "copies intégrales". Any person can
request "des extraits d'actes de naissance ou de mariage". The difference
with the "copies intégrales" is that "les extraits ne comportent aucun
renseignement sur les parents de l'enfant (acte de naissance) ou des époux
(actes de mariage)".

Forgive me for the quotations in French, I wanted to give you the literal
text of the leaflet issued by the Archives de Paris. And please correct me
if you feel I am wrong. In brief, my opinion is that even for records less
than 100 years old, there is considerable scope in the information
available. Death records are fully accessible, birth and marriage extracts
can give you dates of the event, if not details about parents, which of
course is an important restriction.
