Hi Robert,

I know that the IKG in Vienna has limited resources e.g. due to corona-related restrictions.
Depending on your request, you can contact the Jewish Records Office (matriken@...) or the Archive (archiv@...) directly.

Kind regards,

Hi Friends - several times in the past weeks, I've attempted to email the IKG in Vienna at the email address listed on their website: office@...

All attempts are fruitless as the emails are returned/bounced. The alternate addresses also don't work anymore.

Any suggestions please?

Re: List of Rebbes prewar Warsaw #warsaw #rabbinic

Saul,

One way to find at least some names of the rabbis is to use:
https://genealogyindexer.org/directories

In the search field put the word rabin (which is Polish for rabbi.)

From the drop down box labelled "any place" choose Warsaw (listed under Poland.)

There are many names of rabbis listed in this directory:

1939/1940 Warsaw (City + Suburbs) Telephone Directory + (Small) Trade Directory

Good luck in your search,

Re: Family moved from Ekaterinoslav (now Dnipro) to Feodosia (Crimea) #ukraine #russia

Sherri Bobish

Hi Lowell,

I'm going to make a guess here.  Ekaterinoslav is about 500 KM north of Feodosia, and Feodosia is a port town.  Perhaps the family was hoping to board a ship in Feodosia, and ended up remaining there for awhile, hence a child being born there.

As far as I can tell the long haul vessels (to The U.S., for example) did not make port at Feodosia, but perhaps there were ships from there to one of the ports that handled the trans-Atlantic passenger ships where they could have transferred to a ship to The U.S.

Just a thought,

Sherri Bobish

Isaac,

This upcoming free online talk and film screening from Fordham University's Center for Jewish Studies may interest you, although it is in regards to traditional music of the Jews of Ukraine, not Lithuania.

I have no further information than what is in the following link.

A Virtual Film Screening and Panel Discussion

A panel discussion of a documentary “Song Searcher,” a documentary about Moyshe Beregovsky, a musician and scholar, who traveled across Ukraine  during the most dramatic years of Soviet history with a phonograph to record and study the traditional music of Ukrainian Jews. His work began in the 1920’s and ended with his arrest and imprisonment in a Stalinist labor camp in 1950. Most of the songs he recorded on hundreds of fragile wax cylinders were deemed destroyed. But Beregovsky succeeded in saving the musical heritage of the centuries-old Yiddish civilization. He rescued the Living Voice of Ukrainian Jews from the flames of the Holocaust but paid for it with his life.

A password protected link to a virtual screening of the film and a zoom link to the panel discussion will be provided upon registration.

Panelists:

Anna Shternishis, University of Toronto

Lyudmila Sholokhova, NYPL-Dorot Jewish Division

Mark Slobin, Wesleyan University

Gennady Estraikh, NYU

Re: Seeking Out going emigration records from the US between 1904-1908 #usa #general

David Oseas

There is very little in the way of records available on immigrants who returned to Europe.  The only collections that I'm aware of are located at NARA in Philadelphia, and both are, as you mentioned, around WWI -- see the article  "NARA Coast to Coast: Emigration Records at the National Archives at Philadelphia, Part 1" (I don't think they ever got around to publishing Part 2):  https://narations.blogs.archives.gov/2010/10/25/nara-coast-to-coast-emigration-records-at-the-national-archives-at-philadelphia-part-1/

You may get lucky and find their outbound journey at a connecting port, such as Liverpool -- try searching for them on a site that specializes in European records, such as FindMyPast.

News Update from Ukraine Monday February 28th by Gesher Galicia #ukraine #poland #general #events #galicia

Steven Turner

Email Received from a friend of Gesher Galicia in Italy

Hi all,

I just spoke with Rav Kolesnik from Ivano Frankivsk.

I know him because some years ago I went in Ivano Frankivsk to make a

research on my family LUFT from that town.

I called it him because I had the program to go there with a van to bring

what they need and eventually take some people out of Ukraine.

Ivano Frankivsk is just 1600 km from my home.

They heard some explosions in town but the situation in the Jewish community

is calm for the moment.

We want to help these people, as we want to help other Jews in need in

Jewish Galicia in Ukraine.

Apparently the only way to help them is to send money to buy what they need.

I gave to Rav Kolesnik  my availability to make a shipment if they need

something.

And I renewal my availability  to Gesher Galicia.

From Mykhailo Zubar, Gesher Galicia's representative in Ukraine

Kyiv, 12:45 Kyiv time, [10:45 GMT, February 28]

Our pessimistic forecasts did not come true and the night passed relatively calmly. There were several air raid alerts, but no gunfire was heard. It was quiet in our area of the city, so I slept the best that I have since the start of the war. We are still sleeping in our clothes, though. I think that this pause may be connected with the start of negotiations, but we are afraid that if they do not produce a result, everything will begin again.

Today my wife and I left our building for the first time since Friday. We have a small market near us, and we were able to buy vegetables, meat and some cereals. As a result, we now even have a small stock of food. There are huge queues of people everywhere, because they are still selling old goods, though the authorities have promised that when they run out, the delivery of essential products will be arranged.

While we were standing in the market, a Russian missile was shot down above us.

The book ספר הלכות גדולות and Rabbi Dov Ber of Plunge's father, Rabbi Sheftel #rabbinic #lithuania

aaran1286@...

Shalom,

The book "ספר הלכות גדולות : על פי מהדורת ויניציה ש״ח ושאר דפוסים וכתבי־יד" mentions that Rav Dov Ber of Plunge's (ancestor of Israel Salanter) father was called Sheftel. I have attached the excerpt from google books which says this.

However, in Rabbi Yehezkel Katzenellenbogen's book "Kneset Yehezkel", a primary source where Dov Ber is mentioned, it does not mention his father.

I would be very grateful if someone could suggest a source that corroborates what is said in the book attached. If someone happens to have the book, then the citation for this information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Seeking Hebrew translation on headstones #translation

fredelfruhman

You have received a number of responses, some of which contradict each other.  You've also asked several questions.  I will try to help.

Bertha's Hebrew name is BRACHA.  It means blessing.

Her father's Hebrew name is Avraham.  You say that the records show "Benjamin".  One question that I would ask is:  are you sure that you have the correct gravestone?   If the answer is yes, there are many possible explanations for the differences in name.  For example, Avraham might be her biological father, while Benjamin might be the man who raised her.  Or, her father might have had a double Hebrew name, such as Avraham Binyamin, and the Binyamin (Benjamin) part became how he was known secularly, but fell away (or was forgotten) as being part of his Hebrew name.  But, the most likely reason is that there are no real "rules" about "matching" religious and secular names, and Avraham might have been his religious name, given to him at his brit, while Benjamin was the secular name put on his birth certificate.

Louis Goldberg had a double Hebrew name, and so did his father:

ARON LAYB son of Shimon Yehuda the Levite.

These "double names" are sort of like a first name followed by a middle name.  The family name is not part of this.   You seem to expect them to include "Goldberg".  However, even though some tombstones do include the family name in the Hebrew, most do not.

As someone else wrote, "Aron" is an unusual form of the much-more-common "Aharon".

For the future, may I suggest that you post images of tombstones on the ViewMate feature of jewishgen, instead of to the group.  Here is how:  https://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/topost.asp

To me it looks like Rossover.
I took a look at the JGen town finder database.
I entered "Ros" and did a search "begins with"
That brought a long list.
One was Rosava in Ukraine.
You don't include the name of the person you're researching, but there are 23 people who've listed that town in the JGFF database.  It might include names you know which might provide a clue.

All the best,

You can either go to the following link...

https://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/overview

... where you'll be able to locate a (free) searchable database within the "National Archives Catalog".

Or you can go to the following link...

https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/United_States_Immigration_Online_Genealogy_Records

... that also has (free) searchable resources as well.

Good Luck! :-))
