Dear Jewishgenners,
I recently wrote for help concerning a letter I was translating. I thought Finan was a name but on further scrutiny it turns out that the word was probably "Finance". This letter was written in Yiddish. Sharon Cooper, Ottawa, Canada |

Did the husband have to pay for a "get" or a divorce?
#general
sharon cooper
Dear Jewishgenners,
In trying to make sense of a letter, written in Yiddish in 1885 in Hungary, I can't figure out why it is mentioned that finances are discussed in regard to a divorce, and why the husband says he can't pay for a "get". Was the husband responsible to pay either the rabbi or the wife or someone? Any help would be appreciated. Sharon Cooper, Ottawa, Canada |

Re: Michaols--Jewish theater in Moscow

David W. Harris <dharris1@...>
--Bernice Heister asked about Michaols,a famous actor and director of the
Jewish theater in Moscow... Has anyone ever heard of him and the Jewish theater?-- I believe the party she is searching is Shloyme Mikhoels. Reference to him, his films and relationship with the Soviet Yiddish Theater can be found in Nahma Sandrow's book, "Vagabond Stars". It also includes a still of him >from one of his movies. I suggest that Bernice again pose the question to the Yiddish Theater and Vaudeville Research Group, one of the SIGs functioning under the JewishGen umbrella. Readers of that group may be able to provide more insight about both the actor and the Moscow Yiddish Theater.
