No you do not. I recommend getting up around 5AM eastern time
and registering then. It will only take a few minutes, and the
system will remember who you are >from that point on anyway (assuming
you select that option).

The index card info is free. I think you have to pay to see a copy
of the actual manifest actually (which you can order >from microfilm
from your local LDS family history center.)

entered the surname, but, No hits, No runs, certainly some errors.
Does anyone know if you need to register before you see results?

I've had some surprising misses, too, but diligent looking will find
them. I was looking for a Morris, Bertha, Herman, and Louis
Mogilevsky. I found latter three of them together, as: "Brosche,
Chaim, and Leib Mogilawsky. I know Morris came over a bit earlier,
but no sign of him under any spelling.

So far.

Once the crushing load is relieved (either thru more servers, or less
demand), this is going to be a _great_ resource. We've waiting this
long, I don't mind waiting a bit longer. The records aren't going to
go away.

Good luck everyone!

Several people have commented on the inability to find the names they
know should be in a passenger list.
My input is to emphasize what one person mentioned a few days ago. The
spelling of the name may or may not be the same as you expect.
There is the further complication, the transcriber (who may or may not be
familiar with names of the nationality you are interested in) did not
transcribe "correctly", the often time difficult to read entries. Having
read many passenger list records I can attest to the fact that
deciphering the hand written names is almost impossible in some cases.
For example trying to figure out a script "o" vs "e" vs "a" can be a
challenge; when written in a string i,m,n,u,w can be confused.
from his naturalization papers I knew the name and ship for one of my
relatives. The first time I went through the passenger list I did not
find him. His name was Morris Chernick, I knew >from experience the name
should be Czernik or some variation. The second time I looked I found
Moritz C?ernak (second letter unreadable) traveling as Russian, German,
everyone else in the family (about a dozen relatives) traveled as
Russian, Hebrew. I am almost positive I will not easily find Morris
(Moish) Chernick when I search the database. The data base is going to be
a very valuable resource, but don't expect miracles. Be prepared to try a
lot of variations of names, even some that do not seem "reasonable".

Don't get too fancy. Make the password "emeraldsailor" and you should have
better luck... if it isn't too long!

Passwords are not required to be unique - only userids.

I have tried *many* different passwords and
they all have been returned with that space blank. So I have not gotten
any further than trying to register.

Anyone have a clue as to what is happening. One of the passwords that was
returned was emeraldsailor%. I doubt that many others thought of that one.
Please help.

Yes, just keep trying. Also... a couple of little tricks:
turn off cache while you are doing reload until you finally get the
main page, then turn cache back on. When you get to the page
that has the "continue", *right*-click on that link and open the link
to a new page. That way if it fails you don't have to start all
over again. I should not tell you things, but I know that if you
want to find this info half as badly as I do, you are pretty
desperate. :)

Best of luck to you Genners!

some more servers to handle the load.

Re: Best time to access Ellis Island URL #general

My experience was much the same. I got into the database at 3:30am
eastern time. I was able to obtain at least 5 new first names to my
surname query for Forstadt (the actual results contained 35 hits) but
when I tried to go further, the server cut me off. At least now I am
confident that this will be beneficial once all the glitches are fixed!
I am wondering if there are any of us here in the tri-state area who
would be willing and/or interested in taking a group trip to Ellis
Island to do the researching? It might be easier. Just a thought.

Research in Rochester, NY -- ELIE #general

Malatestinic, Greg <Greg.Malatestinic@...>

Hello JewishGeners:

I am writing in the hope that you can assist me in getting information in
Rochester, NY.

Through a cousin found on JewishGen, I recently learned the identity of my
g-grandparents. Phyvel (Paul) ELIE and his wife Mishka CANDEL who lived in
Sirca (and possibly Podu Iloaiei) near Iasi, Romania. They left for Toronto,
Canada in 1907 > in the wake of the peasant's revolt and related pogroms.

We've found Mishka's tombstone - she passed away in 1939 at the age of 86.
We know that her husband, Phyvel, passed away sometime before 1920,
however we have not found his tombstone.

During a subsequent search of the St. Alban records (foreigners crossing
into the US) I discovered that in 1916 Phyvel had been living in Rochester,
NY at 22 Mancy Street. The records also show there were other relatives or
friends in Rochester as well -
M. ENOVATISH at 38 Joseph Avenue
Charlene SQUABS? at 50 Avenue B???

My guess now is that Phyvel passed away in Rochester sometime between 1916
and 1920 and that he is buried there.

I was hoping that someone could advise me how I can find out whether
Phyvel ELIE is buried in Rochester. Where were Jews buried between 1916 and
1920 and are there any records for these sites?

Thanks,

Catherine Richter
