Why do I receive so many messages that have a header only and no text.?
I subscribe to individual messages and am not on AOL.

Re: new book and Tamas Stark #hungary

Louis Schonfeld <Lmagyar@...>

I have just returned >from 16 remarkable days in Israel, and I was hoping to
wait a day or two before posting any messages to H-sig (A complete report
trip will be forthcoming at a later date). However, I am compelled to give a
"heads-up" on Tamas Stark. Today, I will be asking Randy Braham to share his
information about Dr. Stark. He is a controversial figure among Hungarian
holocaust scholars, and both his views, sensibilities and methodology have
been challenged by those who know him and his work.

Best wishes

Abraham and Sarah #general

Brandler Institute of Chasidic Thought <bict@...>

According to the commentaries I have seen, Sarah was the daughter of
Abraham's brother. Thus she was his niece. (It was customary in those times
to call a niece a "sister" and therefore Abraham told that to Pharaoh and
Abimelech - in order to save his life)
I will be glad to discuss this further off list with anyone. Although this
is technically also "Genealogy" - I am not sure that all our subscribers see
it that way.

Wishing All A Kosher and "Freilech" (Happy) Passover,

(This has been for many years the traditional Passover salutation - and
doubtlessly was used by many of our ancestors)

given name Lazel ? #belarus

Alexander Kott <alexkott@...>

What might be the origin of the given masculine name
Lazel?

I assume it is >from Eliezer (similar to Leizer, Lazer,
etc.) Could there be other possibilities?

The person was given this name in early 1800's.

Books of Residents #poland #lodz

Hendlisz Gilbert <gilbert.hendlisz@...>

Hello,

I do not know if you have already faced this problem: you find the birth
certificate of all the children of a same family, but some of them seem to
vanish: they never got married, they even don't die....In fact, they go
elsewhere to get married, to die or they emigrate. On the other hand, other
members of the family suddenly appear without any trace of their place and
date of birth.
I was thinking about the solutions that could be found to this kind of
problems in the "Books of Residents" These were the subject of an article
by Fay Bussgang I read in Avotaynu.
Does someone know if such books exist for Lodz, how they look like and if
Jews were recorded in a separate section. Research in that direction could
be considered as a goal for the future.
I'd like to know your opinion about this.

Gilbert Hendlisz.
