Try Your Failed EIDB Name Searches Once More
#general
HushLine <hushline@...>
There seems to be room for hope for those whose EIDB name searches have
resulted in disappointment. While doing a search just now (midnight Wednesday 04/24 CDT), I noticed a new message in the "Alternate Spelling" section. To wit: "The final version of the alternate name finding tool will be in place shortly. We appreciate your patience while we continue to upgrade the site." The alternate spelling feature has been suspended, although "close matches" is still functioning. If this action is a result of feedback such as has been posted in this group, then the administrators of the site are to be credited with having a desire to make this the excellent tool that we all seem to sense that it could be. Let's cross our fingers. Elissa Hunter Chicago

Ellis Island Access: Best Time/Worst Time
#general
Gary Mokotoff <mokotoff@...>
It appears that the scales have tipped to the opposite direction regarding
gaining access to the Ellis Island database. For the past few days I have found it difficult to access the site in the morning and have had little difficulty using it at 11:00 p.m. New York time last night. In fact I used it for about a half hour with few access problems. Gary Mokotoff

EIDB success and not- SPUND/TIKOTZINSKI
#general
Linda D. Epstein <lepstein@...>
Having not been able to get onto the EIDB, I tried to log on this past
Sunday morning (10am edt) and got on the first time. I registered and everything! And then I put in SPUND. No go. SHPUNT. No go. SHPUND. No go. Well, there goes hope in finding my father's mother's family. Then I put in TIKOTZINSKI. My father's father's family has been spelling it TYCOTCHINSKY for many years, but having accessed some jewishgen databases, I figure Tikotzinski is the way to go. Yay! 2 hits! Bigger Yay!: It is my grandfather and his sister who came over when they were 10 and 13, respectively, >from Sokolka, Grodno. They were the youngest of 8, and I cannot find the others through EIDB but it's possible they didn't even come into Ellis Island, or maybe they came under EPSTEIN. Hard to tell, so I keep trying. And they have a picture of the ship, the Noordham. I have added those two people and ships to my Saved Searches. Often I just like to go to the page of my grandfather's and look at it to see he really did come over. Every once in a while I try the site while at work. Sometimes I get on, which surprises me since it's heavy Net traffic at that time. I just keep hitting refresh when I get the famous page that says too much traffic, and try again until I've exhausted all possibilities. Sometimes I can get back on, sometimes I can't. Don't give up hope. This is an amazing web site that could bring wonderful results. I wasn't told anything new (except maybe an excerpt on the ship that brought them over) but my aunt cried on the phone when I told her her father was on that site. That was worth the effort. Is anyone else having problems printing pages >from the site? I tried to print the ship and it didn't line up next to the text. I tried to print my grandfather's page to mail to my aunt and I can't print it. Is this common for anyone else or is it just me? Thanks for reading my story. Linda D. Epstein -lepstein@... Ellis Island
#general
Harry Zimmerman <JoelWire@...>
I have some exact dates with ship names. Does anyone know how I can put
in a ship name and have it print out the manifest. Perhaps in this way I could check for an unusual misspelling of a name and find the person I am looking for. Also, when you find a name and click onto it the system does not allow you to pick the name of the ship that you want in the passenger search profile. It only allows you to see the ones it has for the names you have chosen. Any thoughts about how to manipulate this to put in the name of the ship that you want. Finally I tried getting on at 10pm in California. Got on relativly easy but once I "plugged" in a name I would get thrown off as they were trying to "find" my information. A trick. Try putting in the first 3 letters of a name and then edit to name gender and choose all the choices. This helps sometimes. Good luck! Sandy Zimmerman

Dear group,
Some good news, and some statistics about the EIDB. The site received more than 25,000 hits per second when it opened last week, and 26 million successful hits in the first 54 hours. No wonder we had trouble getting through <g>! Compaq, which provided the original equipment, is loaning the Ellis Island Foundation 10 more servers to speed up searches. The spokesperson for the foundation also reported that they're looking at long-term solutions for access to their site. Hilary Henkin Atlanta, GA
