There are two ways you can subscribe....online or through e-mail If you plan to do it online, go to JewishGen's home page, <http://www.jewishgen.org> and scroll down to the Discussion Category. Click on Special Interest Groups and you'll be taken to the subscription page, click on Subscribe and the webform will take you through the process. If you decide to subscribe via e-mail just send a message addressed to: listserve@... and say subscribe frenchsig (type your first name) (type your last name) JewishGen guidelines require that full names be registered along with e-mail addresses. ***You must confirm your subscription*** Whether your subscribe via the WebForm online or via e-mail you will receive a message asking that you confirm the request to subscribe. All you need to do is hit the reply button and a properly addressed e-mail should result. Send it back to the listserve robot and you'll know you've done it all correctly if you get a Welcome message telling you all about the group, how to manage your subscription and the address to use in order to post messages. If you need any help with the process, please write to <support@...> and not to me. We wish all 'genners very good fortune in researching in the French speaking countries on which this SIG will focus. Carol Skydell JewishGen Vice President, Operations

Passport registration database for 1900 is growing rapidly. I have now
received a further 2000 names and we hope to have these up on the web for searching very soon. There are probably a further 2000 names to enter and then we will be ready with over 8000 names. As mentioned before these are people who registered their passports in Riga in 1900 and gives their places of origin many >from Lithuania ,Vitebsk and all over the Russian Empire. It is a very exciting database as occupatiions are also given as well as their address in Riga. I have just been informed of a book on the Jews of Kuppenheim which
comes complete with a CD which sounds like a tremendous resource. See the book on http://www.kuppenheim.de/Bucherscheinungen.htm. It costs a very reasonable 28 DM excluding postage and packing >from the town council. The CD contains information on all the Jewish people the author could find in different sources between 1739 and 1940, as well as Jewish birth, marriage and death books 1814-1869, the Standesbuecher of Kuppenheim 1870-1940 and the Ortsippenbuecher of Altdorf, Flehingen, Kippnenheim, Nonnenweier and Weingarten/Baden. Documented in the 'Begraebnisbuch' 1814-1869 are the funerals of Jews >from the following areas: Rabbinatsbezirk Buehl: Baden-Baden, Badenscheuern, Bodersweier, Buehl, Ettlingen, Gernsbach, Hoerden, Lichtenau, Malsch, Muggensturm, Neufreistett, Rastatt, Rheinbischofsheim, Schwarzach and Stollhofen and of Jews of the following towns/cities: Altheim, Altona, Beuel bei Bonn, Berlin, Binau, Bordeaux, Bruchsal, Dettenhausen, Durlach, Gelnhausen, Gunstetten im Elsass, Hagenau, Hamburg, Hechingen, Homburg vor der Hoehe, Joehlingen, Karlsruhe, Kippenheim, Kirchen bei Loerrach, Koenigsbach, Landau, Liebau im Kurland, London, Mannheim, Menzingen, Merzhausen, Muenzesheim, Paris, Randegg, Reschelau bei Prag, Rheinsberg, Strassburg, Stuttgart, Wangen and Weitersweiler in the Alsace. surname LEWITT: paternal line greatgrandfather from Belgium
#general
Martin E. Lewitt <lewitt@...>
Around 1910 or thereabouts, my surname, Lewitt, greatgrandfather emigrated
from Belgium to Wales and married a Welsh woman. He died when mygrandfather was young and my grandfather did not get along with his new stepfather and emigrated to Canada on an orphan boat when he was 11 or 12, so we don't know much about my greatgrandfather. With this surname and being >from Belgium, I have often thought he might be a Jew who converted under Spanish rule. Are there records of conversions under Spanish rule? Are there other theories in Jewish history involving Belgium that I should consider. I want to assess the likelihoods before I pay for a Y-chromosome test. thanx for any assistance, Martin -- Martin E. Lewitt Domain: lewitt@... Sandia Park, NM

Researching FERNAND and KLAWIR
#general
Primpark@...
Dear All,
I am trying to establish the whereabouts and trace any descendants of someone called Esther KLAWIR, who was born in Lublin, Poland. Esther was one of eight children (all girls), and she and an older sister emigrated to Palestine shortly before the outbreak of World War II - she is known to have been living in Tel Aviv in the late 1950s. I would also be very interested to hear >from anyone who may know two branches of a family called FERNAND - they also originated in Lublin. Aron (?) and Shprintza FERNAND had 5 children - 3 boys & 2 girls. The eldest son was called Yossel, and he was studying to be a violinist. Yossel's father emigrated to the US some time during the 1920s, and the rest of the family followed shortly afterwards. Yossel's grandfather may have owned a store selling musical instruments. Another member of the FERNAND family survived the Holocaust and is believed to have emigrated to Australia shortly after the end of the Second World War. I would be extremely grateful to anyone who could provide me with some help in connection with these inquiries - please respond privately. Many thanks for your help - and wishing you all a happy Pesach. Jonathan Newman, Leeds, England. Primpark@...
