Throughout Jewish history there have been many occasions when Jews or
descendants of Jews have become the most violent of anti semites. Then of course we must remember that Ferdinand and Isabella were being pressured by the Catholic Church in Rome. It has been said that Torquemada, the head inquisitor in Spain was a Jewish convert or a descendant of Jews. Let us never forget that Saint Paul the real founder of Christianity was a Jew. In Spain at the time of the inquisition many Jews had hidden the fact of their origin so it was possible that Columbus was a Jew and had hidden it because of the fear of the Inquisition. Of my paternal ggparents' 11 children, I've been able
to track down, and make contact with, 9 branches, and have fleshed out the tree with close to 90% of all the descendents. Two years ago, I was hot on the trail of a cousin from one of the missing branches, had an address and a phone number, which (sigh) turned out to be a fax number. None of my messages were ever returned, the number was dis- connected, and I gave them up for lost. Or, at least, put this branch on the back burner. Last May, while browsing through Ancestry's website, I noticed that they had message boards, so on a lark, I posted a few names which were among the missing. Nothing! Nada! Zilch! Until last night, when I opened up my email and found a message >from this very cousin who , by accident, had stumbled across the site while researching an estate. I emailed back, with a few "test" questions, his answers were correct, and I gave him my 'phone number. This morning he called, and it turns out he lives just 10 miles down the road. Breakfast is scheduled for Friday morning, and >from what I've gleaned >from our short 'phone conversation today, he knows almost all of what I need to *finish* my 132 year old paternal tree, on gmother's side. The tough part is yet to come. I've never been able to even begin to look for this side's passenger lists because I don't know their surname, or precisely >from whence they came, in Poland. I know the name was changed, but on which side of the pond is still in question. And, to complicate matters, both ggparents' tombstones are blank. Yep, blank. It seems that one of their sons, having done exceedingly well for himself, decided that mere engraved headstones just wouldn't 'do'. He had bronze placqes made, with all the requisite, and essential data upon which we depend so much, and said bronze was then affixed to the headstones. Welllllll, they were stolen during a spate of vandalism at the cemetery, and I had no lead as to my ggp's fathers' names. Until, again on a whim, I called the cemetery to see if they had records of the monument company who may have erected the headstones and bronze placques. Not only did they have the record, but they had the 'phone number, and the company is still in business. Another call, and I have a promise that they will look up their old (>from 1940) records and send me copies of what they had inscribed on the plaques. Can we really get this lucky? Perhaps an option to consider is bringing "Tea Candles" (small candles is
aluminum holders) and putting a lit one on or near each photographed grave. In so dong you will not only have a visible marker but also taking part in an ancient Jewish custom to honor the deceased. Though they are not that expensive and come in large packs, for many gravestones it might be an expense. In my trips to the Ukraine I have brought large packs of fifty or so of these candles to light by the graves and found them very managable. Avrumy Heschel Brooklyn NY

Temporarily marking gravestones
#general
Thomas F. Weiss
Dear JGenners --
I am looking for suggestions on temporarily marking gravestones. Let me explain. Last September, my wife and I visited the birthplaces of my maternal grandfather and grandmother -- Buchach and Rozhnyatov, respectively. One objective of the trip was to photograph all the gravestones in those two cemeteries and to make those photos available on the web. The two cemeteries each contain over 500 gravestones and we managed to photograph only a small fraction of them. These gravestone pictures can be viewed on the web. For Buchach there are 279 photos of 152 gravestones. Through the help of Israel Pickholtz, many of the gravestone inscriptions have been translated; the translation project is on-going. To view these photographs, see the links on the Buchach homepage http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetLinks/Suchostav/Buchach/buchach.html For Rozhnyatov, there are 98 photographs of 92 gravestones. Translations are not available yet. To view these photographs, see the links on the Rozhnyatov homepage http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetLinks/Rozhnyatov/Rozhome.html Now for my request for suggestions. I plan to return to the two cemeteries in June 2001 and hope to photograph the remaining gravestones. The first step will be to determine which gravestones have already been photographed --- they are scattered in the cemeteries --- and to mark them so as to avoid photographing them again. But how should they be marked so that the mark is visible but does not deface the gravestone? I have thought of several methods: (1) Brightly colored tape stuck to the gravestone --- I tried this and it does not work well on a wet gravestone. (2) Chalk --- I think this will also be a problem on wet stone. (3) Crayon --- this may not come off too easily on porous stone materials. (4) Spray paint on the grass/ground near the stone --- I suspect this will be difficult to use when it is windy, and messy to transport. etc. I would greatly appreciate your suggestions, comments, and concerns.
