Looking for PELZ/PELTZ - Vohlin, Ukraine->New York City. #general

Yaacov Slizak <yslizak@...>

I have very little information on this one:

My G-Grand Aunt Chana SPOSOB arrived in the United States of America
before IWW with her husband Yosef (Yoske) PELTZ or PELZ. They lived in New
York and had 3 daughters (one of them worked as a dentist - probable).
Both arrived >from Ukraine, Vohliniya Gubernia - probably a small shtetl
called Koryitnitsa, close to Ustilug and Hrubieszow.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

The SHENKINS, Louis WOLK, and the Old Minsker Independent Benevolant Society #general

Richard Blalock <richard@...>

Hello,

This is a long convoluted story, so please bear with me. My great great
grandparents had their burials taken care of by the Old Minsker Independent
Benevolent Society. They are buried at Old Montiefore Cemetery in Queens.
The wife is so confusing for me. My entire family knew her as "Basha"
Shenkin. Her death certificate lists her as "Bessie" and the cemetery
claims her name is "Anna". It is definitely the same woman. The death
certificate confirms the maiden name Tischman that we knew for her.

I called and spoke to the current President of the Old Minsker Independant
Benevolent Society. He spoke to me about how the organization had once
enjoyed a membership of over 1000 people who all conducted various business
dealings with each other. Now their membership is around 60 and is simply
a burial society.

All of that to get to my point. The cemetery lists a contact for these
burials as a "Louis Wolk". The current president had no idea who this man
was. Bear in mind, Basha Shenkin died in October 4, 1919 and Jacob in
October 15, 1934. It was a few years back. A thorough review of my
genealogy has concluded that he is not a relative.

1. Do you know who Louis Wolk is ?
2. Do you know how I could obtain 67 year old records >from Zion Memorial
Chapel, 41 Canal Street, Manhattan?
3. Records for an undertaker named A. Gutterman who conducted business on
49 Orchard Street?
4. Jacob died at Beth David Hospital, 1824 Lexington Avenue, Manhattan. Do
they still exist and would they give out records of next of kin, etc?
5. Did Russian Jews >from that era typically have obituaries printed?

Here are their death certificates fresh >from the archives:

Some more information on Jedwabne.

Many of you have already seen the posting about the book "Neighbors"
by Jan Gross (to be published in April) which is being sold at the
JewishGen Mall and about the extract >from the book that appears in
the March 12th edition of the New Yorker magazine.

Many of you may not be aware, however, that the article quotes >from
the yizkor book on Jewabne, referring to it as a memorial book. The
translation >from the yizkor book has been online at
http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/jedwabne/Yedwabne.html since 1998 and
the massacre of the Jewish population of Jedwabne is described in the
yizkor book. On that site you will also find the English translation
of an important Polish newspaper article written last year, with an
introduction by Morlan Ty Rogers, the project coordinator for the
yizkor book translation. See

Gravestones in France #general

Bert Lazerow <lazer@...>

"Nee" is the past participle of the French word "naitre",
and means "born" for a female, but is used in the sense of the
name she was given when born.
Most French gravestones are a delight, at least those
pre-dating WW2. A woman's might read: "Mme Albert Levy,
nee Genevieve Bloch", giving you at a glance both the woman's
maiden name and the full name of her husband. And if the
husband had predeceased her, it would traditionally have been
"Mme Vve Albert Levy" to show that she was a widow.
I do not know if these complete and graceful inscriptions are
still used by French Jews.

Easy as pie if you were not in Israel, the indexes are all filmed by the
Mormons. I wrote to the Amsterdam Archives and the Hague for birth and
marriage records and got them with no problem (aside for figuring out how
many dollars 35 guilders were). How long have you been waiting? I would
expect it might be several months for an answer.

School Records from New York City #general

Margiloff <margiloff@...>

When I called, the Board of Education told me what school served my
mother's girlhood address, and I called that school, P.S.123. Turned out
to be the very same building (built 1900) and the Principal easily
retrieved and sent me copies of the elementary school records of my mother
and her five siblings. They date >from 1906 to 1919! But I'm afraid this
experience is rare. Other school records are apparently gone, though I
have never been able to learn whether the Board of Education has an
archive. They just don't respond to written inquiries.
