JGSLA March Meeting to show "There Once Was A Town"
#general
Jan Meisels Allen <janmallen@...>
The Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles will meet on March 26, 2001.
The program will be the award-winning PBS documentary -- There Once Was A Town. This is a documentary on a visit to an ancestral shtetl. While the video showed in many US cities last fall it appears that it probably did not show in Los Angeles, so this may be the first time in Los Angeles it is being shown. In 1941 Nazis invaded the small town of Eishyshok, Poland (now Lithuania), and brutally murdered nearly all 3,500 Jewish residents. Fifty-six years after the massacre, four survivors and their families return to their childhood home. This remarkable 90-minute documentary is narrated by Actor Ed Asner, a descendant of an Eishyshok family. Professor and author Yaffa Eliach leads the group in its search for remnants of Jewish life that flourished before the war. The documentary is based in part on Professor Eliach’s critically-acclaimed book, “There Once Was a World: A Nine Hundred Year Chronicle of the Shtetl of Eishyshok.” The meeting starts promptly at 7:00 p.m. on Monday March 26th. The location of our meeting is: Skirball Cultural Center, Haas Conference Center 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90049 There is no fee for attending the meeting and non-members are welcome. To learn more about the JGSLA and see the schedule of upcoming meetings please visit our website at: http://www.jgsla.org Jan Meisels Allen JGSLA Program Vice President |

"El" as given name for a male?
#general
Lynne Shapiro <lynneshap@...>
I have a copy of a record of birth and circumcision >from the archives in
Odessa. According to two different translators, it shows the name of the child's father as, in English, "El Gdalovich UMANSKY". I assume Gdalovich is a patronymic. (My great-grandfather, Nachum UMANSKY, referred, in a translated letter I have, to "Uncle Gedalia".) What kind of name is "El"? Is it an abbreviation for a longer name? Or does it have some other meaning? I have never noticed this question on JewishGen before, and the discussion group archives search did not seem to allow me to search a two letter word.
