If anyone is planning to visit Mt. Judah Cem. in Ridgewood, NY in the
near future, may I ask a favor? Could you possibly see if they will release a list of those buried by the Wisoko-Litowsker Bruderlicker? I am all but absolutely convinced that my grandmother, Jean Frances (Fanny) VILNER FEINBERG (Sheina Feigel bat Aharon Leib) is buried there, but letters to the cemetery office have twice said they have no record of her. I would be glad to pay for copy and mailing costs if they will do this. Joy Weaver mail to: joyweave@... On the passenger list entry for one of my great-uncles, under the column
"Whether in possession of $50...", the notation "$2" has a line drawn through it. There were several other similar notations on the page (no one related to my great-uncle). Can anyone explain why this would have been done? Lisa Dashman Croton-on-Hudson, NY |

Finding "Har?ilch" in Minsk gubernia

I am trying to find the town where our ancestors came >from in Minsk
gubernia. The only data I have is that on one of our great-uncles' school registration in London his birthplace was written by the school administrator as "Har?ilch". The ? could be a "d" but there is a mark over it. I searched on Jewishgen for all the towns around Minsk but couldn't find anything that looks (or sounds) like this. Any ideas? I apologize for having to post this here, but I undoubtedly received email
over the last two months >from people whose addresses are not in my address book; a majority of these people will see a message posted on a LitvakSIG or JewishGen mailing list. Thnx! Just a quick note to let you know that I've been experiencing email problems for the last TWO months! I did not receive any email sent between Jan. 6, 2001 and March 10, 2001!! On March 9, 2001, I was finally able to retrieve all (?) emails sent to me after Feb. 17, 2001; the emails sent between Jan. 7 and Feb. 17 appear to be permanently gone. Basically, if you sent me any email after the start of the year, please assume that I did not get it! Even if I did get, it did not arrive until yesterday (and I'm not sure i got all of them). I had the impression, >from something which I saw a while ago on this Digest, that by upgrading to AOL 6.0 we would be cutting ourselves off >from LitvakSIG. Was I mistaken either in my observation or in my interpretation of it?
Dr. William A. Saxton Boca Raton, Florida MODERATOR'S NOTE: Dr. Saxton's impression of the message about AOL 6.0 is generally correct. AOL 6.0 uses HTML to send messages and therefore messages arrive in the LitvakSIG moderation queue laden with MIME encoding. Such messages are automatically rejected by moderators of most other Digests; Although your moderator tries to work with some MIME messages, some are virtually incomprehensible because of the coded characters running through them, and must be rejected. If you have already "upgraded" to AOL 6.0 and cannot retrieve your previous AOL versions to send messages, you can go to www.aol.com and send your digest message >from their website, which does not turn the messages into MIME. However, for AOL users, there is another, very serious problem that is getting worse every week. AOL increasingly "reads" messages such as the LitvakSIG Digest (as well as those >from JewishGen and other SIGs) as "spam" and won't deliver them. Discussions with AOL have taken place, but with no results. This is even worse for those AOL users who subscribe to the discussion group with individual messages. More and more AOL users are now also subscribing to some free e-mail program just to make sure that they get their digests. All digests are archived on the Jewishgen website, but this usually is not done until several days after the digests have been received. Also, if you think you have missed a digest, you can send a message to: <lyris@...> In the body of the message, write get litvaksig yyyymmdd (For example, to get yesterday's digest, you would write: get litvaksig 20010313) |

Hi everyone !
I am a newcomer >from Argentina to the Ukraine SIG. I am currently researching on my ancestors that came >from Ukraine, ex USSR. My great grandfather, JOSE SCHUTT, came to Argentina around 1905 or 1906 with his wife, called JAIA LEIA NEFTULA MENDELEVA (transcribed in the Argentinean document as LEA SPECTOR) and their son MANUEL SCHUTT, aged two. They were escaping >from Russian-Japanese war. Apparently they came >from the town of CHUDNOV, in the gubernia of VOLHYNIA near ZHITOMIR. I posted in http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/toview146.html#vm461 the scanned file with the name of JOSE SCHUTT in cyrillic alphabet >from a Russian document. His brother, DAVID SCHUTT remained there and died in the war. I do not know whether he had descendants or not. In this URL I posted a letter http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/toview147.html#vm462 that i know has something to do with him but i cannot translate the yiddish. Another sister, ROSA SCHUTT emigrated to Canada and her descendants are currently living in Florida, USA ( I already tracked them). Can anybody help with any relevant information to this story or know something regarding these names ? Thanks so much, Betina Sor. |

In her message, which was forwarded by Howard Margol on 12 Mar 2001,
Vitalija Ghirchyte refers to the 1898 Viljampole family list. That list contains the only reference that I have found (so far) to the family of my father's mother, Gene (Hene) Shulman bat Boruch. Though the list gives the ages, it gives them as of the time of the last revision list (and not as of 1898). Does anyone know the date of the revision list that is referred to? Perhaps someone could figure out that date if an ancestor, whose age is already known, is listed. Even without the dates, I am very appreciative of the work that the Kaunas Uyezd Group has done and urge that everyone who can, support their Uyezd Group(s).
